Role plays a big part in determining a player’s AFL Fantasy and SuperCoach scoring potential. In this weekly subscriber-only column, we reflect on the past round’s CBAs, kick-ins and TOG% for an insight.
Collingwood v Melbourne
CBAs (24): Darcy Cameron (14) still had more CBAs than Mason Cox (10) despite the latter’s good impact. Clayton Oliver (23) attended all but one CB for his score of 146/141.
Kick-ins: Nick Daicos (1/1) took one of Collingwood’s eight kick-ins. Michael Hibberd (8/7) took the bulk of Melbourne’s kick-ins on his return to the side, with Christian Salem (2/2) getting the other two.
TOG%: Cameron played 82%, while Cox only 66%, maintaining that split. Max Gawn spent some time off the ground getting treatment but still had 85% TOG.
North Melbourne v GWS Giants
CBAs (26): With Kayne Turner (13) coming into the midfield to tag Josh Kelly, Hugh Greenwood (10) was squeezed out to an extent.
Stephen Coniglio (15) had plenty of midtime, while Josh Kelly (13) had the equal fourth most for GWS behind ruckman Matthew Flynn (19), Tom Green (17) and Coniglio (15). Callan Ward (12) picked up Harry Perryman’s (5) CBAs after he went off injured.
Kick-ins: Aaron Hall (6/4) returned to take six of North’s 12 kick-ins for his 77/94. Harry Himmelberg (6/5) and Isaac Cumming (5/5) shared the GWS kick-in duties, leading to scores of 161/187 and 128/115 respectively.
TOG%: Green (90%) had high TOG for a midfielder, scoring 104/117.
Brisbane Lions v St Kilda
CBAs (21): Lachie Neale (20) attended all but one CB. Zac Bailey had no CBAs for the Lions, with Deven Robertson (3) seeming to have an impact on him lately.
St Kilda kept their usual mix although Jack Sinclair (2) came in for his first CBAs since Round 8, possibly due to injuries to Mitch Owens (3) and Zak Jones (12).
Kick-ins: Daniel Rich (5/5) and Keidean Coleman (2/1) took most of Brisbane’s eight kick-ins. Sinclair (7/6) also bossed the Saints’ kick-ins, getting six of his 24 kicks from them.
TOG%: Popular trade-in Mitch Owens’ concussion meant he only played 36% TOG. Dayne Zorko’s hamstring injury kept him to 48%.
Fremantle v Hawthorn
CBAs (29): Will Brodie (23) still attended 79% CBs despite Nathan Fyfe’s (14) return. Sean Darcy (24) had better midtime with Lloyd Meek out of the side, although only scored 79/91.
Tom Mitchell (19) had an uplift in his CBAs this round compared to last weekend but scored 70/81.
Kick-ins: Luke Ryan (5/4) took half of Freo’s kick-ins as per usual. Lachie Bramble (3/2) continued in his new role as Hawthorn’s kick-in taker although James Sicily (2/2) was among a few to share it around.
TOG%: Brodie (67%) was low as always, although there wasn’t a drop-off despite Fyfe’s return. Fyfe played 81% on his return.
Essendon v Carlton
CBAs (22): Zach Merrett (15) had a good role with plenty of CBAs for his 88/90. Adam Cerra (2) was subbed out early with injury, with Matthew Kennedy (12) taking up his CBAs on his return. Sam Walsh had 11 CBAs.
Kick-ins: Jordan Ridley (3/3) had eight of Essendon’s eight CBAs. Sam Docherty (6/4) had half of Carlton’s kick-ins, helping his score of 135/139.
TOG%: Kennedy only played 67% on his return from injury.
Richmond v Port Adelaide
CBAs (24): Dustin Martin (8) attended a third of the CBs yet only managed 43/70. Jayden Short (10) continued his midfield role.
In Sam Hayes’ absence, Jeremy Finlayson (19) and Charlie Dixon (5) did the bulk of the ruck work for Port. Zak Butters (3) had a drop-off in CBAs for his 55/87.
Kick-ins: Port only kicked five behinds with Daniel Rioli (2/2) having Richmond’s most kick-ins. Dan Houston (1/1) only took one of Port’s 10 kick-ins.
TOG%: Debutant Judson Clarke had 71% time on ground. Ollie Wines seemed to spend some time off the ground in the first half, totalling 74% for his 72/93.
