Role plays a big part in determining a player’s AFL Fantasy and SuperCoach scoring potential. In this weekly subscriber-only column, we reflect on the past round’s CBAs, kick-ins and TOG% for an insight.
West Coast v Melbourne
CBAs (25): Greg Clark attended 18 of the 25s for the Eagles in a good sign for a positive scoring role. Don’t worry too much about his score of 61/62 (AF/SC) as Melbourne are one of the toughest teams to score against in AFL Fantasy and SuperCoach.
Nothing unusual for the Dees, with Max Gawn (17) and Luke Jackson (8) taking the bulk of the ruck split for his score of 87/73.
Kick-Ins: With Shannon Hurn out, Alex Witherden (7/5) feasted on kick-ins scoring 112/104, although Liam Duggan (3/1) took a few for the first time this season.
TOG%: Playing primarily forward, Hugh Dixon (89%) had high TOG. After being subbed out last week, Connor West (66%) had low TOG for someone scoring well at 114/123. Clark had 72% TOG.

GWS Giants v Carlton
CBAs (30): Matt Flynn’s absence meant Braydon Preuss (28) had 93% CBAs for his 108/120, which wasn’t a major scoring spike, to be fair. Josh Kelly (16) was around his normal mark for his 134/156, but he did have only six in Round 8. Stephen Coniglio had seven CBAs, marking his most since Round 2, but only scored 49/37.
George Hewett’s (22) return to the side saw Sam Walsh (7) squeezed out of the middle, with the former Rising Star averaging 61% CBAs per game until this round when he was down at 23%. Walsh still scored 110/149, which was a SuperCoach season high.
Kick-Ins: Isaac Cumming (8/7) dominated the GWS kick-ins with Lachie Whitfield not taking any for the third time in four games given his more advanced role. Sam Docherty (3/3) took the most kick-ins for Carlton, with Zac Williams not taking any after going off injured.
TOG%: Coniglio had 78% TOG despite a back knock. Docherty (95%) had the third highest TOG of anyone on the field. Hewett had 77% on his return from a calf injury.
Gold Coast v Fremantle
CBAs (17): There were low CBAs due to the weather meaning a lack of goals, with few significant trends.
Kick-Ins: Connor Budarick (4/4) had the most for Gold Coast for the first time this season.
TOG%: Touk Miller (87%) and Andy Brayshaw (85%) showed off their stamina with high TOG for midfielders. Miller scored 128/130, while Brayshaw went 99/94. Will Brodie’s TOG was a bit higher at 76%, scoring 102/121.

Adelaide v Brisbane Lions
CBAs (27): Kieran Strachan (23) came in and basically took on Reilly O’Brien role, meaning no spike for the back-up ruck Elliot Himmelberg (4). Josh Rachele (3) continued his run of CBAs, having had 14 in the past three games, but scored only 37/32.
Hugh McCluggage’s (16) CBAs went back up after only nine against West Coast in Round 8. Dayne Zorko (10) had 37% which is around his average over the past few rounds. Jarrod Berry didn’t have any CBAs again, meaning he’s had one in their past four games.
Kick-Ins: Brodie Smith (4/4) dominated the kick-ins upon his return from concussion, with Jordan Dawson not having any for only the second time this season. Daniel Rich (8/8) had Brisbane’s most but Keidean Coleman (2/0) took two although he didn’t play on for either.
TOG%: Not a lot to note. Lachie Neale (85%) had the most of the mids.
Sydney v Essendon
CBAs (23): Tom Hickey (9) played second ruck upon his return from injury, with Peter Ladhams (14) having more CBAs.
Zach Merrett only had six CBAs, scoring an ordinary 51/57, while Andy McGrath (7) and Ben Hobbs (9) had a rise in mid-time.
Kick-Ins: Jake Lloyd (2/2) played second fiddle to Nick Blakey (9/9) from kick-ins. Lloyd’s points surged late, scoring 102/98. Jordan Ridley (8/8) returned from illness to lead the Dons’ kick-ins, scoring 78/113.

St Kilda v Geelong
CBAs (27): Jack Steele (16) hurt his shoulder mid-game yet soldiered on, but his CBAs dropped to 60% which was well below his norm. Zak Jones (15) and Brad Crouch (19) had more than usual. Jack Sinclair had zero CBAs for the fifth time in the past six games, having had 10 last round.
Rhys Stanley’s (21) return from injury meant Mark Blicavs’ CBAs (6) returned to normal, yet he scored 93/104. Mitch Duncan had no CBAs for the second straight week.
Kick-Ins: Sinclair (5/4) had the most kick-ins for the Saints after having none last round. Duncan (2/1) was among those the share around Geelong’s kick-ins including Tom Stewart (3/2) and Cam Guthrie (2/1) for the first time this season.
TOG%: Sam De Koning had 100% TOG. Rookie Mitch Knevitt (66%) wasn’t Geelong lowest but he wasn’t far off. Steele fought hard through injury to get through 74% TOG, scoring 77/74.
North Melbourne v Port Adelaide
CBAs (27): With Jy Simpkin, Hugh Greenwood, Jason Horne-Francis and Tristan Xerri all out for North, it was an unusual midfield mix, with Curtis Taylor (11) and Jaidyn Stephenson (11) getting mid-time.
Travis Boak (14) had just above 50% CBAs, scoring poorly with 38/36. Zak Butters (14) and Connor Rozee (16) had good numbers.
Kick-Ins: Aidan Corr (8/7) had North’s most. With Riley Bonner and Tom Jonas out, Ryan Burton (9/8) bossed the kick-ins with Dan Houston missing out.
TOG%: Butters only had 71% for his 84/104, likely impacted by a fourth-quarter head clash.

Hawthorn v Richmond
CBAs (35): With Tom Mitchell out, Connor Nash (23) had plenty of CBAs, while Will Day (12) got involved for the first time this season.
Dustin Martin spent plenty of time forward but still had 13 CBAs, up to 37% having had 26% last week. Jayden Short (15) continues to have mid time despite the availability of Dion Prestia (25) and Trent Cotchin (29), although Short was below 50% for CBAs.
Kick-Ins: James Sicily (6/5) led the way for the Hawks. Short didn’t take any kick-ins despite his lower CBA percentage. Nick Vlastuin (4/4) led the way.
TOG%: Sicily (96%) had the second most TOG in the game. Debutant Bigoa Nyuon (94%) had Richmond’s most despite a low score. Hawks debutant Sam Butler only had 63%, while Maurice Rioli was at 65% as he struggled to 18/7.
Collingwood v Western Bulldogs
CBAs (25): Darcy Cameron (19) had 76% of the CBAs, with Aiden Begg (6) taking a back seat in the ruck. Pat Lipinski (6) had low CBAs.
Jordon Sweet (20) came in to ruck for the Dogs and absorbed Tim English/Stefan Martin‘s CBAs, with Zaine Cordy (5) pinch-hitting. Josh Dunkley only had six CBAs, down from approximately 50% last round to 25%. Marcus Bontempelli attended 14 of 25 upon his return.
Kick-Ins: Scott Pendlebury‘s absence meant Darcy Moore (6/6) had plenty, with Nick Daicos (2/2) getting his first kick-ins in three games.
TOG%: Begg’s (62%) numbers were low. For the Dogs, Bailey Smith (92%) was high as per usual, while Bontempelli (87%) had good numbers upon his return. Jack Macrae (78%) was a bit below his norm. Buku Khamis (67%) was low but that’s standard for a rook.
