As we edge closer and closer to the end of the season, we find ourselves desperate to separate ourselves from the pack. Who are the top Captaincy options this week to do just that?
Not a lot of match ups jump off the page for Captaincy options this week, so who should we be looking to? Well, there are still some great options, but with any luck, we might have a nice VC score locked in by the end of Friday nights game.
Vice-Captains
Essendon play Adelaide on Friday night, meaning Jye Caldwell would usually be a clear favourite for me as a VC option this week. The problem is there are strong rumours he may miss due to a calf injury, so we may not have the option… If he does play, I would still back him in as the top VC option, having scored 120+ for 4 consecutive weeks now.
Zach Merrett is next in line for this game. Last year against the Crows he scored 150, and 2 weeks ago Neale (143) and Dunkley (140) certainly didn’t struggle against them. Merrett has only scored 130+ once this year, but he has only dropped below 100 four times.
Jordan Dawson is also someone to consider, but he is well behind the other two for me. He did score 128 against the Bombers last year, but this season he has been too up and down to be ahead of the guys above him.
If you don’t want to go with any of the guys mentioned above as your VC, or you end up needing a fallback captaincy option, my top 5 are below.
Captains
- Zak Butters
Butters went from being a major concern due to the attention he was getting from the opposition, to having less CBA’s but producing much better results for fantasy coaches. Back to back scores of 130+, and a match up with the Tigers has Butters at the top of the list this week. Zak scored 117 against them earlier this year, Tom Green found form against them last week with 123, whilst the week before Brayshaw racked up 146 of his own. Richmond give up massive amounts of points on there day, and Butters could make the most of it this week.
- Connor Rozee
The other man that could make the most of the same match up is Connor Rozee. I can nearly guarantee one of these two will get off the chain this week, the hardest part is picking which one it will be. Rozee has scored 104 and 147 in his last 2 games, scored 116 against Richmond earlier in the year, and it is honestly a flip of the coin between the top two this week.
- Lachie Whitfield
This guy is in some hot form. We all know what he is capable of when he is up and running, and at the moment, he certainly is. Averaging 132 over his last 3 games, including a 160, this week he comes up against the Suns who he scored 106 against earlier in the year in just 72% TOG. Houston managed to score 122 against the Suns last week off half back, whilst the week before McKercher had 37 disposals and 123 points. Whitfield should rack up and dominate again this week, and with his ceiling, has to be seriously considered.
- Errol Gulden
Anyone who can score 150+ three times in six weeks has to make the list. Averaging 120 over his last 5 games, scored 108 against the Lions last year, and has the ceiling we dream about when tossing up Captaincy options. It isn’t the easiest match up this week, but neither were GWS in round 15, when he scored 154…
- Rowan Marshall
Probably very stiff to be as low as number 5, but not everyone can be at the top of the list. RoMar is back in form, scoring 150 last week and averaging 125 in his last 3 games. He did only score 96 against the Eagles in round 12, but last year he scored 130 against them. Oscar McInerney managed to score 98 against the Eagles last week, so I don’t see why Marshall wont be back to scoring a big ton against them this week. A good option.
