I want to flag this early: this is looking like a very tough week for picking Captain options. If you get a VC score of 115+, lock it in. The third week of the bye rounds is here and we have six teams not playing.
Follow me on Twitter @Pig_Mentality for more SuperCoach VC/C chat.
There isn’t much point in me dividing people into VC and C options this week, as your bye players do not lock until the final game of the round has begun. This means you can loop right up until Sunday at 4.40pm. Therefore, I discuss the top options this week and rank them.
Captains and Vice Captains
1. Josh Dunkley
Most of the Brisbane boys score a lot more at the Gabba than away from it. Dunkley is not one of those boys. He averages 113 at the Gabba and 128 away from it. Having said that, he has hit elite form lately and needs to be considered every week. 153, 146 and 148 in his last three matches make him my favourite VC option this week. VC or C option.
2. Tom Stewart
Tom is in great form with scores of 127 and 138 in his last two matches. Combine this with the fact that his last two games against Port Adelaide have netted him 122 and 130 points, mean this is an easy VC shot on the first night. The Power have kicked the most behinds this season, which could mean plenty of easy kick-in points for Stewart. VC option only.
3. Tom Liberatore
Tom has gone over 122 in four of his last five games. With The Bont likely to get the tag, I am expecting Libba to roam free in this one, against the third easiest team for midfielders to score against. Strangely, Liberatore has never scored over 111 in his entire career (13 games) against North Melbourne. I expect that number to be smashed this weekend. Captain option only.
4. Marcus Bontempelli
Marcus has been incredibly consistent this season, with his last six scores all being between 112 and 125. These aren’t really numbers you would be stoked with from your Captain, and I expect him to cop some attention this week. Liam Shiels has been used as a tagger for the last 7 quarters and has been quite effective at it. The Bont should be a safe fallback Captain option if your VC fails, but you should be expecting a 120 rather than a 150. Captain option only.
5. Tom Green
Tom has a three-round average of 87 and has been disappointing coming into his bye. He was tagged to a 77 last weekend and 89 the week before. This week he plays against Fremantle, who give up the fourth most points to midfielders. I expect a bounce back game from Green this week against a team that will not tag him. Bolton (151), Taranto (136), Petracca (122) and Gulden (156) highlight the points that are available against the Dockers lately. VC or C option.
6. Zak Butters
Zak is in red hot form, which some weeks translates into big SuperCoach scores, and some weeks does not. 118, 105, 104 and 184 in his last four weeks highlight this, despite him likely winning the most Brownlow votes in that period. Geelong give up plenty of points to midfielders; including Macrae (145), Bontempelli (124), Green (119) and Coniglio (108) in their last two matchups. However, it is hard to know if we will get SuperCoach-friendly Butters in this one or not. VC option only.
POD Captain?
1. Kieren Briggs
Kieren has scored 114 and 128 points against two of the hardest ruckmen matchups. Fremantle are one of the hardest SuperCoach matchups in the league when Sean Darcy is playing. However, Shrek has been sidelined since Round 11, leaving the sole ruck duties to Luke Jackson. Jackson only wins the Hit Out 37.4% of the time, leaving plenty of points on the board for opposition ruckmen. Nankervis (114) and Grawndy (83+74) have managed to score well against Luke. VC or C option if you want to have some fun.
My moves
I scored 2,126 last week which had me hovering inside the top 1k, at rank 776th for the season.
Last week I chose Marshall as Vice-Captain (119) into an English Captain (99). I copped English’s score as Captain.
This week I will have the Vice-Captain on Stewart followed by Dunkley as my Captain.
