Role plays a big part in determining a player’s AFL Fantasy and SuperCoach scoring potential. In this weekly subscriber-only column, we reflect on the past round’s CBAs, kick-ins and TOG% for an insight.
West Coast v Adelaide
CBAs (33): Nothing of note from the Eagles, while Ben Keays (16) was largely squeezed out again until the last quarter, scoring only 45/40.
Kick-ins: Shannon Hurn (6/6) took all of West Coast’s kick-ins, while Jordan Dawson (8/8) had exclusive rights to Adelaide’s, fueling his 97/108.
TOG%: Keays played 85% despite his drop in CBAs and poor score.

Brisbane Lions v Carlton
CBAs (33): Brisbane’s midfield set-up was normal, except Rhys Mathieson’s (11) share dropped to 33% with. Zac Fisher (11) and Paddy Dow (9) came into Carlton’s midfield without Matthew Kennedy.
Kick-ins: Daniel Rich (7/6) took on most of the Lions’ kick-ins, scoring 67/83, which impacted Keidean Coleman (1/1) who managed 56/67. Adam Saad (6/4) took most of Carlton’s 12, with Sam Docherty (2/1) only getting a few for his 101/124.
TOG%: Gun onballers Lachie Neale and Patrick Cripps both played 90%. Coleman played 78% after cramping up last week, scoring 56/67.

North Melbourne v Sydney
CBAs (35): North’s midfield set-up was standard. Callum Mills (17) had under 50% CBAs, scoring 89/106.
Kick-ins: Jaidyn Stephenson (9/9) continued his defensive role despite Aaron Hall’s (6/6) return. Stephenson scored 114/109 although he was probably helped by Sydney kicking 18 behinds. Nick Blakey (4/4) and Jake Lloyd (4/4) took the bulk of Sydney’s kick-ins.
TOG%: Aaron Hall returned from H&S protocols playing 79% and scoring 94/105.

Port Adelaide v Richmond
CBAs (29): Brynn Teakle (15) came in and took more than 50% CBAs, scoring 86/73.
Toby Nankervis (21) was dominant without Ivan Soldo scoring 137/158, while Jayden Short (14) was back getting plenty of CBAs, scoring 98/77, after having one CBA in Round 20.
Kick-ins: Port shared around their 13 kick-ins with Dan Houston (2/2) getting a few.
TOG%: Connor Rozee was hampered by a knee issue and played 71% for his 64/67.

Geelong v St Kilda
CBAs (29): The Cats’ midfield looked different with Patrick Dangerfield, Joel Selwood and Mark Blicavs out, with Max Holmes (10) among the beneficiaries scoring 98/101. Despite those absentees, Mitch Duncan (4) barely got a look-in with 98/96.
Rowan Marshall (26) bossed the rucking CBAs again, with Cooper Sharman (2) and Josh Battle (1) doing a tiny bit of pinch-hitting. Marshall scored 118/96.
Kick-ins: Tom Stewart (3/3) had a poor evening scoring 46/48, which would’ve been worse if not for kick-ins. Jack Sinclair (3/3) took three of the Saints’ eight kick-ins.
TOG%: Jack Steele (88%) and Marshall (87%) both had high TOG for the Saints. Stewart played 84% but was blanketed, due to a close watch from Mitch Owens.

Western Bulldogs v Fremantle
CBAs (28): Jackson Macrae’s (10) CBAs were way down at 36%, having not dipped below 60% since Round 15. Macrae scored 101/102. Fremantle’s midfield set-up was standard.
Kick-ins: Caleb Daniel (5/5), Adam Treloar (3/3) and Bailey Dale (3/3) shared the Dogs duties. Luke Ryan (8/7) took the bulk of Freo’s kick-ins as per usual, aiding his 151/146 along with 15 marks.
TOG%: Bailey Smith’s TOG was down at 85% which is below his norm. Will Brodie was restricted to only 62% for his 73/65.

GWS Giants v Essendon
CBAs (27): Josh Kelly didn’t attend any CBs, playing a wing role and scoring 91/87. Braydon Preuss (15) and Kieren Briggs (12) split the ruck duties.
Darcy Parish (24) returned and effectively picked up Jye Caldwell’s CBA, along with Dylan Shiel being out. Zach Merrett’s (22) CBAs didn’t drop off despite his below-par score.
Kick-ins: Harry Himmelberg (4/4) maintained his defensive role with kick-ins shared with Isaac Cumming (4/4). Jordan Ridley (5/5), Nick Hind (4/4) and Mason Redman (3/3) shared the Dons kick-ins.
TOG%: Stephen Coniglio played 86% on his return from soreness. Merrett still was on for 85% amid a tag, restricting him to 55/71. Briggs played 65% alongside Preuss with 72% in the GWS ruck.

Hawthorn v Gold Coast
CBAs (22): Tom Mitchell (8) was squeezed out down to 36% compared to his 54% season average, scoring 83/90. Dylan Moore (16) arguably took Mitchell’s CBAs as he continues to get more and more each week, scoring 101/101.
Noah Anderson (20) spiked up at David Swallow’s (10) expense yet the latter scored 131/130.
Kick-ins: James Sicily (5/5) had Hawthorn’s equal most kick-ins. Brandon Ellis (6/5) returned from injury to take six of Gold Coast’s 10 kick-ins, helping his 99/96.
TOG%: Tom Mitchell was down at 76%, while third-gamer Elijah Hollands played an impressive 80% for his 118/116.

Melbourne v Collingwood
CBAs (32): Angus Brayshaw (19) had plenty of CBAs for the second week running while Max Gawn’s (18) ruck split was fairly standard for his monster score of 152/136.
Jack Crisp (17) attended just over 50 per cent of the CBAs for his improved 99/105. Darcy Cameron (20) had 62% CBAs yet only managed 52/45.
Kick-ins: Steven May (3/3) took three of Melbourne’s five kick-ins. Nick Daicos (4/4) led Collingwood’s kick-ins with four of their 10.
TOG%: Max Gawn played 91%, aiding his big score. Pies ruck Mason Cox only played 50%, allowing Darcy Cameron to play 79%.
