R20 CBAs, Kick-Ins & TOG% Analysis: Prime Marshall role, Duncan watch, Short kick-ins, Angus mid switch

Essendon v North Melbourne

CBAs (30): Zach Merrett (27) dazzled with a score of 172/140, helped by 90% CBAs after dipping down to 35% last round. He thrived with Darcy Parish and Dylan Shiel out, while Kyle Langford (19) took the latter CBAs. North’s midfield set-up was normal.

Kick-ins: Jordan Ridley (4/4) and Mason Redman (4/2) took most of Essendon’s kick-ins. With Aaron Hall out again, Jaidyn Stephenson (7/7) reclaimed the kick-in role for his 112/111, alongside Luke McDonald (5/5).

TOG%: Nothing of note.

Richmond v Brisbane Lions

CBAs (33): Toby Nankervis (26) reverted to lead ruck with Ivan Soldo dropped, after only three CBAs last week. Jayden Short only attended one CB and has only attended 11 over the past three games.

Brisbane’s midfield set-up with fairly normal, with Rhys Mathieson (19) maintaining good CBAs for 65/89.

Kick-ins: With a revised role, Short (3/2) took his first kick-ins since Round 6, scoring 82/74. Nick Vlastuin (4/4) still took the most for Richmond. With Daniel Rich, Keidean Coleman (4/3) took Brisbane’s most.

TOG%: Dayne Zorko played 88% in a sign he’s back to fitness, while Coleman was restricted to 74% due to cramping, scoring 95/105 when he appeared set for a massive score.

Gold Coast v West Coast

CBAs (34): The Suns’ midfield set-up was standard, while Jai Culley (11) only had 32% CBAs, impacted by a hamstring injury and Willie Rioli’s (16) return.  

Kick-ins: With Brandon Ellis, Rory Atkins (3/3) took the most for Gold Coast. With Alex Witherden out, Shannon Hurn (6/6) took more than half of the Eagles’ kick-ins.

TOG%: Touk Miller’s fitness was on show, playing 92% for his 122/153.

Adelaide v Carlton

CBAs (22): Ben Keays’ forward role on Adam Saad meant he had no CBAs, while Jake Soligo (15) got significantly more midfield time than usual, scoring 62/70. Patrick Cripps (18) continued his high CBAs with George Hewett out.

Jordan Dawson (6/5) took six of Adelaide’s seven kick-ins, helping him score 104/126. Adam Saad (5/4) and Sam Docherty (4/4) primarily shared Carlton’s 12 kick-ins.

TOG%: Patrick Cripps played 88% for his 139/146.

Geelong v Western Bulldogs

CBAs (27): Mitch Duncan (2) had his first CBAs since Round 15 although they were fairly nominal. Jon Ceglar (15) came in and took the injured Rhys Stanley’s ruck CBAs. The Dogs’ midfield set-up was fairly normal, except Marcus Bontempelli’s (13) CBAs dropped below 50% after a quad cork, scoring 86/98.

Kick-ins: The return of Tom Stewart (6/5) impacted Duncan’s (3/2) kick-ins, with the latter scoring 86/90. Duncan retained a few with Zach Tuohy out but that’s one to watch when Tuohy returns from H&S protocols.

Caleb Daniel’s (3/3) return didn’t impact Bailey Dale (5/5) too much, with the latter scoring 93/103. Adam Treloar had been playing a half-back role similar to Daniel, but missed this game with a calf issue.

TOG%: Patrick Dangerfield had a much-improved display, scoring 92/97, yet his game-time was only 63%. Bontempelli still played 82% despite his cork.

St Kilda v Hawthorn

CBAs (22): Rowan Marshall (20) attended 91% of CBs without a recognized back-up ruck, fuelling his score of 163/173. Marcus Windhager (17) had high CBAs in a tagging role but didn’t score well, so that may open up a slot moving forward if they drop the tag. Windhager had tagged Jai Newcombe (4) early, but he was shuffled out of the midfield.

Kick-ins: Jack Sinclair (5/5) led the Saints’ kick-ins, helping his score of 96/102 despite Finn Maginness running with him in the first half. Blake Hardwick (6/4), James Sicily (3/3) and Will Day (3/3) took the bulk of the Hawks’ kick-ins. Sicily only scored 67/93.

TOG%: Rowan Marshall played 85% as St Kilda’s lead ruck. Dan Hannebery scored 91/93 on his return from long-term injury despite only 63%.

Sydney v GWS Giants

CBAs (24): Callum Mills (10) only had 42% CBAs, continuing his low recent run but still scoring 116/120. GWS’s midfield looked different with a few ins and Stephen Coniglio out. Josh Kelly only had six CBAs for his 91/103, while Braydon Preuss (19) had 79% CBAs as lead ruck, scoring 85/64.

Kick-ins: Jake Lloyd (5/5) had more of the Sydney kick-in share alongside Nick Blakey (2/2), with Lloyd scoring 106/97. Isaac Cumming (5/5) took half of GWS’s kick-ins with Harry Himmelberg (2/2) only getting two for his 69/74, as he spent time forward.

TOG%: Preuss played 72% game-time despite being GWS’s number one ruck.

Collingwood v Port Adelaide

CBAs (27): The big move was Darcy Cameron (18) reverting back to 66% of CBAs with Mason Cox (9) taking on a lesser ruck role. Cameron scored 96/113. Jordan De Goey (20) returned from injury to have 74% CBAs, with Pat Lipinski (6) squeezed out while Taylor Adams’ (9) injury had an impact too. Jack Crisp had just under 50% CBAs which was fairly normal.

Robbie Gray (13) got more CBAs with Willem Drew out. Zak Butters (13) had almost half the CBAs, up on his season average of 38%, scoring 103/120.

Kick-ins: Darcy Moore (4/4) and Nick Daicos (4/4) took eight of Collingwood’s 10 kick-ins. Ryan Burton (6/5) took most of Port’s kick-ins with Riley Bonner out.

TOG%: Jack Crisp played 90% despite his sub-par score of 64/60. Darcy Cameron’s role checked out with 89%. Jordan De Goey had 85% on his return from injury, scoring 86/100.

Fremantle v Melbourne

CBAs (21): With James Aish (17) tagging Clayton Oliver, there were less CBAs for Andy Brayshaw (13) and Will Brodie (11) than usual, but both scored well with 137/138 and 104/92 respectively.

Angus Brayshaw (12) got CBAs for the first time this season with James Harmes sidelined, scoring 108/123.

Kick-Ins: Luke Ryan (10/9) bossed Freo’s kick-ins, taking 10 of the 13, while Steven May (6/5) took six of Melbourne’s seven kick-ins.

TOG%: Brodie was typically low at 64%. Max Gawn played 88% along with Christian Petracca at 87%, while the tagged Oliver was at 83%. Luke Jackson had a late concussion test, meaning he had 72% TOG.
