Role plays a big part in determining a player’s AFL Fantasy and SuperCoach scoring potential. In this weekly subscriber-only column, we reflect on the past round’s CBAs, kick-ins and TOG% for an insight.
Often these stats will glean insights into role changes, explain scoring spikes or drop-offs or beneficiaries from injuries or absences. It all points to our subscriber-only game-by-game CBAs and kick-ins stats sections too.
Brisbane Lions v Collingwood
CBAs (32): Jarrod Berry (9) had his fewest CBAs since Round 1, while Cam Rayner (2) had a season low. This was largely because Hugh McCluggage’s CBAs surged up to 24, having averaged 9.5 per game prior to that. Dayne Zorko had one CBA, only his third of the season.
With Taylor Adams (18) returning from H&S protocols and Scott Pendlebury (26) moved into the middle to monitor Lachie Neale, Pat Lipinski was squeezed out and had no CBAs.
Kick-ins: Daniel Rich continues to practically monopolise Brisbane’s kick-ins, while the Pies shared it around.
TOG%: Debutant Kai Lohmann was on field at 66%, along with Collingwood midfielder Taylor Adams (66%) on his return from H&S protocols. Cam Rayner continues with low TOG at 68% in his return from an ACL injury.
Rookie Reef McInnes had 72% time on ground.
North Melbourne v Western Bulldogs
CBAs (36): Tristan Xerri (25) dominated the CBAs again for North, compared to Todd Goldstein (11). Jason Horne-Francis had a season-high 26 CBAs but that didn’t translate with season-lows of 56/39 (AF/SC).
Tim English attended 33 of the 36 CBAs as his sole ruck role continued. Ball magnet Bailey Smith was an ever-present with a season-high 22 CBAs, while Marcus Bontempelli went forward for a season-low 10 CBAs.
Kick-ins: Aaron Hall went down injured mid-game, meaning Flynn Perez (3/2), Ben McKay (2/1) and Bailey Scott (1/1) all got involved for the first time this year. Bailey Dale took four of the Dogs’ five kick-ins.
TOG%: Ball magnet Bailey Smith continues to amaze with his TOG this year, going at 94%. Jack Macrae was down to 81% after a fourth quarter concussion test.

West Coast v Sydney
CBAs (31): West Coast’s mix continues to change, but worth noting back-up ruck Hugh Dixon (15) had almost half of the CBAs.
Isaac Heeney only had three CBAs, meaning he’s had 13 since having 16 in Round 1.
Kick-ins: Nick Blakey and Jake Lloyd shared Sydney’s four kick-ins.
TOG%: Elliot Yeo had a first quarter concussion test and played managed minutes at 66%, while Patrick Naish was at 93%. Isaac Heeney was down at 74%, spending time on the bench in the fourth term.
St Kilda v Gold Coast
CBAs (26): Jade Gresham (23) continues to get plenty of midtime for the Saints, while Jack Hayes had eight CBAs in Paddy Ryder’s absence. Rookie Marcus Windhager (5) got involved too, while Jack Sinclair didn’t attend any CBAs and hasn’t since Round 3.
Matt Rowell (23) was an ever-present in the middle for the Suns, while SuperCoach cheapie Malcolm Rosas had two CBAs.
Kick-ins: Sinclair had a season-high four kick-ins (4/3).
TOG%: Matt Rowell has left plenty of owners frustrated but it’s worth noting he was at 89% TOG. Relative rookie Malcolm Rosas was down at 69%.

Adelaide v Richmond
CBAs (30): Matt Crouch (25) was in the thick of it, while Josh Rachele and Rory Sloane didn’t have any CBAs at all, with the latter going off with a season-ending ACL injury during the game.
Shai Bolton had a season-high 26 CBAs for Richmond.
Kick-ins: Jordan Dawson (4/4) led the way for Adelaide, while Nick Vlastuin’s (3/2) return impacted Jayden Short (2/2) who had his fewest kick-ins in a game this season.
TOG%: Super-fit Crows ruckman Reilly O’Brien played 94% time on ground, while onballer Matt Crouch continues his low minutes at 72%.
Melbourne v GWS Giants
CBAs (27): Melbourne’s ruck split was interesting between Max Gawn (16) and Luke Jackson (11).
GWS’s Matt Flynn (21) simply absorbed the suspended Braydon Preuss’ ruck workload. Stephen Coniglio (3) has only had 11 CBAs in the past three Giants games. Tim Taranto (16) and Tanner Bruhn’s (11) numbers climbed.
Kick-ins: Steven May (10/10) continued to practically monopolise Melbourne’s kick-ins, while Isaac Cumming’s absence didn’t lead to an uplift for Lachie Whitfield (2/2), with Adam Kennedy, Jake Stein and Nick Haynes also getting kick-ins for the first time this season. Melbourne were also quite accurate.
TOG%: There was an interesting case study in this game among the ruckmen, with Max Gawn at 91%, while his back-up Luke Jackson was at 66%. On the flipside, Matthew Flynn was at 65% as their lead ruck, which is interesting for those who own Braydon Preuss who was suspended this round.

Carlton v Port Adelaide
CBAs (30): Sam Walsh had a season-high 23 CBAs in the absence of injured captain Patrick Cripps, with Walsh arguably still rebuilding his fitness after an ankle injury in pre-season. Adam Cerra had a season-high 25 CBAs too.
Port were missing Ollie Wines and in his absence Zak Butters had a season-high 17 CBAs, although he’s hovered around that mark.
Kick-ins: Zac Williams (7/7) has dominated the kick-ins over the past four weeks, although Sam Docherty (4/4) had an uplift this round with Adam Saad having fewer.
TOG%: With Patrick Cripps out, George Hewett was at 73%. For Port, youngster Jackson Mead was one of the lowest at 68%, while Port debutant ruck Sam Hayes went at 68% too.
Essendon v Fremantle
CBAs (28): Debutant Ben Hobbs had four CBAs, given a chance late in the middle once Fremantle had the game won.
Caleb Serong (22) returned to absorb Neil Erasmus’ CBAs, while Nathan O’Driscoll missed out for the second straight week given his wide role.
Kick-ins: Jordan Ridley (7/7) had a joint season-high kick-ins. Luke Ryan (6/4) took the most for Freo.
TOG%: Debutant Ben Hobbs had decent minutes at 72%, while Freo recruit Will Brodie continues to have low numbers at 63%, impacted further by Caleb Serong’s return.

CBAs (28): Rookie Josh Ward (21) led the way for the Hawks, while Tom Mitchell (15) continues to attend around half the CBAs.
Patrick Dangerfield’s (17) CBA numbers have dropped by around 20% over the past two rounds. Cam Guthrie was restricted to a season-low 12 CBAs after a corked leg.
Kick-ins: James Sicily (4/3) grabbed a few kick-ins as per usual to boost his fine numbers. Zac Tuohy (5/3) took more than Tom Stewart (2/2) which isn’t the norm.
TOG%: Cam Guthrie typically has low TOG but was further impacted by a cork and finished at 62%.
