UPDATES
Patrick Dangerfield (AF $780k SC $611k MID/FWD) was officially rubbed out for three matches after pleading guilty to his rough conduct charge at the Tribunal.
The Jordan Clark (AF $421k SC $241k DEF/MID) job security discussion continued on Tuesday, with Geelong coach Chris Scott addressing the media about Sam Menegola (AF $760k SC $579k MID) and Mitch Duncan (AF $809k SC $556k MID).
On Menegola, Scott said: “He’s very sore. As we often see, a player can be very sore and unable to complete the game but come up quickly enough to play the next week. I’d put him in the 50-50 camp.”
On Duncan, Scott said: “I doubt Mitch will be ready… We’ll get some players back, Zach Tuohy will be ready. Jack Henry will be ready.”
Matt Rowell (AF $536k SC $495k MID) is the other well-owned player ruled out on Tuesday for a significant period of time with a PCL injury confirmed by the Gold Coast Suns.
The club wrote in an update: "No timeline has been set for his return at this early stage but he is expected to be available to play football again in 2021." There's an expectation of 8-12 weeks.
Despite being suspended, Zac Williams (AF $626k SC $458k DEF) played for Carlton in their VFL practice match and earned praise from reserves coach Daniel O'Keefe.
O'Keefe said: "He laid nine tackles in a game where there wasn’t a lot of stoppages, so he was able to compete really well for us and get the ball going our way with good decisions."
For coaches who are using Jack Saunders (AF $170k SC $102k M/F) as a loophole option, it doesn't seem he's overly close to breaking into the AFL side after their VFL practice match.
Hawthorn VFL coach Sam Mitchell: "Mighty Mouse brings a lot of energy. He played the first three quarters, he didn't play the first and came on at quarter time and gave us some real buzz. He is still learning the game and the way Hawthorn and Box Hill play but he won't leave any stone unturned in terms of his desire to hit a contest."
Sticking with Hawthorn, Chad Wingard (AF $644k SC $452k FWD) won't play Round 2 which will likely be good news for Tyler Brockman's (AF $194k SC $117k MID/FWD) job security. PRICE
Bachar Houli (AF $764k SC $465k DEF) also won't return in Round 2 and may come back via the VFL too.
Richmond Physical Performance Manager Peter Burge said: "He is resuming training with the group this week, with the aim of going back into full training this weekend and being available for Round 3. At what level we are a bit unsure at this stage."
Adelaide have a series of players who'll miss Round 2 with Luke Brown (AF $426k SC $363k DEF) (Achilles), Jake Kelly (AF $358k SC $309k DEF) (concussion) and Mitch Hinge (AF $347k SC $328k MID) (shoulder) ruled out, which may aid Sam Berry's (AF $230k SC $117k MID) job security.
Potential debutant Nick Murray (AF $170k SC $102k DEF) is a chance. Adelaide wrote in their weekly injury update: "Has recovered from a sprained ankle he suffered in the pre-season game against Port Adelaide at Noarlunga."
Matt Crouch (AF $844k SC $594k MID) won't play due to a groin issue, as he rebuilds his training loads but the club said there's "no clear timeline on when he will be available for selection".
Jackson Hately (AF $486k SC $310k MID) will miss another 1-2 weeks with a groin problem.
A debut for Heath Chapman (AF $244k SC $148k DEF) looms with a few key defenders out, although Fremantle coach Justin Longmuir didn’t confirm that on his weekly slot on Seven News Perth.
Longmuir said: “Chappy has put in two solid performances at Peel and looks not far off. We’ll throw his name up at match committee and see where it lands."
Jamarra Ugle-Hagan (AF $270k SC $207k FWD) kicked five goals in the VFL but won't play AFL this week. Dogs coach Luke Beveridge said: "He's still got a fair way to go. We've got to make sure he's ready. It was a step in the right direction but he definitely won't be in the team this week."
Alec Waterman (AF $170k SC $102k FWD) is another who played VFL but in a different role. Bombers VFL coach Leigh Tudor said: "Waterman played at half-back and looked very comfortable playing there for the first time.
"He won a lot of the ball, was strong in the contest and showed his craft and footy smarts. A couple of times forwards got out the back of him, but for his first time as a defender, he was one of our better players."
TOMORROW
Carlton coach David Teague will speak to the media ahead of Thursday's game against Collingwood. We'll learn those teams at 6:20pm AEDT too.
