Munro ruled out, Sams gets the green light to return, Mujeeb exits early

The Perth Scorchers confirmed Colin Munro will miss Tuesday’s game, while the Thunder have given Daniel Sams the green light to return from concussion and Mujeeb Ur Rahman is leaving earlier than expected.

SQUAD NEWS

The Scorchers named a 16-man squad to play the Hurricanes on Tuesday in Perth, with Colin Munro ($141k BAT) dropping out due to a quad injury, replaced by Englishman Joe Clarke ($105k BAT).

On Munro ($141k BAT), Scorchers Sports Science Sports Medicine Manager Nick Jones said: “Colin sustained a low grade quad strain and has started a short period of rehabilitation. He has been cleared of significant damage & will re-join the squad shortly.”

Good news also for Mitch Marsh ($169k BAT/BWL) owners, with the big all-rounder stating he’s 100% fit again after an ankle injury.

Marsh said: “I’m 100% back now. The body is feeling really good. It was a long process. I probably didn’t think I’d be back bowling this soon. The ankle is fielding really good.”

Scorchers squad: Fawad Ahmed, Bancroft, Behrendorff, Clarke, Hardie, Inglis, Kelly, Livingstone, Marsh, Paris, Patterson, Richardson, Rocchiccioli, Roy, Turner, Tye

The Hurricanes named a 16-man squad to play Perth, including Riley Meredith ($166k BWL) who was a late withdrawal due to a rib issue last time out.

Hurricanes squad: Boland, Botha, David, Ellis, Handscomb, Ingram, Lamichhane, Malan, McDermott, Meredith, Moody, Owen, Parker, Short, Winter, Wright

UPDATES

Daniel Sams ($188k BAT/BWL) looks set to return for the Sydney Thunder in Wednesday’s Sydney Smash against the Sixers after concussion forced him to miss the past two games.

Thunder captain Callum Ferguson said on Tuesday morning: “He’s tracking really well. He felt like he was feeling really good and ready to play within a day or two of copping the head knock but unfortunately protocols don’t allow that.

“Obviously his health is the most important thing. Now he’s passed all the tests, been through all the protocols, he’s ready to go. He’s excited to play in a derby tomorrow night.”

Oliver Davies ($80k BAT) remains in the mix, with Ferguson saying: “He’s someone who’s right in the mix and will be discussed at length at the selection table. But we’ve got great depth in this line-up.”

Don’t expect Ben Dwarshuis ($147k BWL) to return from his groin injury this round, with Sixers stand-in skipper Dan Hughes indicating he’s close but not quite ready.

Hughes said: “Talking to him and the physio staff, I think tomorrow might be a stretch. We’re not sure yet. He’s probably more likely for Saturday against the Scorchers.”

Mujeeb Ur Rahman ($205k BWL) is another popular player who won’t play this round, after his departure date for Afghanistan’s ODI series against Ireland changed again.

The Heat said: “Mujeeb Ur Rahman has finished his BBL stint and is enroute to the United Arab Emirates to play for Afghanistan in the series against Ireland later this month.

“The Brisbane Heat had anticipated Mujeeb would be available for Thursday’s clash against the Renegades but he was contacted by Afghanistan team management after Sunday’s loss to the Sixers  with updated travel arrangements.”

Morne Morkel ($138k BWL) may be his replacement in the attack, with the big South African having recovered from an ankle issue.

The Heat said in a statement: “Brisbane have applied to the BBL Technical Committee to bring former South African fast bowler Morne Morkel back into the squad ahead of the clash with the Renegades.”

There was further good news on Joe Denly ($111k BAT) who underwent scans on a dislocated finger.

The Heat said: “Cleared of any fracture after dislocating his finger early in the fielding innings against the Sixers. He will be assessed through training in the next 48 hours with a view to playing against the Renegades.”

Strikers coach Jason Gillespie offered an update on Peter Siddle’s ($119k BWL) fractured thumb. He said: “It’s obviously disappointing that Pete is out injured but we’re hoping he’s not out for very long at all.”

Gillespie also backed Liam O’Connor ($109k BWL) to fill the void left by the departed Rashid Khan ($209k BWL).

Gillespie said: “Liam hasn’t played a game this season but there’s a reason he’s on our list. We think he’s a really good effective bowler in T20 cricket. We’re backing him in to get the job done when Rash goes.”
