West Coast rookie Oliver Francou has undergone plastic surgery after sustaining a nasty cut to his knee in Friday’s Western Derby, with hopes he won’t “miss too many weeks”.
Francou clutched at his right knee after the incident where his own boot scraped against his knee. Eagles teammates immediately called for medical staff as play was stopped for several minutes.
It appears that Francou has avoided any structural damage to his knee but has undergone surgery to repair the cut.
Eagles coach Andrew McQualter said: “It was a pretty scary incident. It’s a big nasty gash, and we’re going to have to wait. I don’t exactly know any more than that at the moment.
“He was OK downstairs. I saw him just then, and he was OK. But it looked pretty scary for people.
“It’s never nice to see something like that and we’re hopeful it’s nothing more serious. They’re talking about maybe he will [go to hospital].”
Francou’s father Josh told SA ABC Grandstand on Saturday: “He is OK. It’s funny when you’re watching it on TV, when he clutched his knee you fear the worst having been through a couple of ACL injuries myself.
“It’s just a nasty gash. He’s actually believe it or not having surgery this morning. I think a plastic surgeon is potentially going to go in and clean it out and stitch it up and hopefully he doesn’t miss too many weeks.”
