Richmond v Melbourne

The Tigers subbed out Jacob Hopper with a hamstring injury. Richmond coach Adem Yze said it’s hopefully short term but they’d wait on scans. He said: “Hopefully it’s not a bad one but I think it’s just a minor tweak.” Richmond have since confirmed a “mild hamstring strain” and Hopper will miss 2-3 weeks.

Christian Petracca was tagged by Marlion Pickett and kept relatively quiet. Dees coach Simon Goodwin said: “We’ve got some strategies in and around Trac and how we can maximise his use. Clearly teams are putting a lot of time into him. He’s had a fantastic season so far. In the end he worked his way into the game nicely.”

Essendon v Collingwood

Essendon coach Brad Scott heaped praise on Anzac Day medalist Zach Merrett. He said: “He’s playing really good footy. That’s what we want our good players, our experienced players doing and he does that at an incredibly high level. I just can’t speak highly enough of him.”

Harrison Jones was subbed out in the fourth quarter after a head collision left him with a bloodied nose and Scott said he was cleared of any facial damage or concussion.

GWS Giants v Brisbane Lions

GWS coach Adam Kingsley heaped praise on debutant Darcy Jones who scored 70/75 (AF/SC). He said: “He looked electric. He looked like every time he went near the ball something was going to happen. I think he showed really good composure for a guy playing his first game.

“He’s got real class, he’s got speed, very skillful. For him to finally break into the team through playing well in the twos and having an impact tonight, we’re really pleased for him.”

Kingsley added that he expects Sam Taylor to be back next week following concussion protocols.

Callum Ah Chee was subbed out early for Brisbane with a hamstring injury.

Port Adelaide v St Kilda

Port had three injuries during the game, including Connor Rozee. Port coach Ken Hinkley said: “Connor has got soft signs of a hamstring, but we’ll get a scan and be clear with what that looks like. He went back on, couldn’t stay there, so obviously it’s leaning itself towards a hamstring which will mean he’ll miss a little bit of time, probably.”

Aliir Aliir and Sam Powell-Pepper (suspected ACL) also exited the game early. Hinkley added: “As it falls, Aliir concussion so he’ll miss next week, he’ll go into concussion protocols, looked pretty good to be honest when he came off but did the test and didn’t quite get through that.

“And ‘Pep’ we’re sitting back waiting and hopeful to see what scans look like with that because it looked a bit nasty with his knee. The medical report is that they’re a little bit hopeful, but we’ll wait and see again what the scan says. As soon as we know the detail, we’ll share that.”

St Kilda ruckman Rowan Marshall spent time off the field early but returned to play out the game. Saints coach Ross Lyon said: “He’s very brave. He copped a knock. With Rowan, it was a bit of a knock and the doctors worked on him and said he was fine to come back on. We’re expecting that he’ll get up but he’ll have to work pretty hard to get up.”

Jack Higgins will likely come under MRO scrutiny for his tackle which left Aliir concussed.

North Melbourne v Adelaide

North Melbourne coach Alastair Clarkson pointed to the fact Harry Sheezel got some midfield time and was asked if they’d persist with that full-time. He said: “We’re not certain. The really difficult dilemma for a coaching group in the position we’re in, you’ve got 18 spots on the field and you like bit-by-bit to say that one is settled and that one is going OK. Over the last 30 games, Sheez has been able to solidify his spot there.

“Our preference was going to be try to consolidate his spot there for the first half of this season anyway. If we move him, he’s got to learn his craft in a different position, which will end up happening. Just for now, it gives us some stability in our back-end. As we’ve done over the last 2 weeks, we’ve moved him into the midfield when we’ve needed him. He’s done OK there. His evolution will be to get exposure to that part of the ground.”

Clarkson noted Luke Davies-Uniacke copped a heavy knock early in the game which hampered him a little bit but said he was a “shining light”.

When asked if it was Colby McKercher’s best game for North after 32 disposals, Clarkson said: “I think so. You’re searching for positives. Zane Duursma played a game a little bit closer to goal today… He kicked a couple of goals, set up a couple more and he did some exciting things for us.”

Adelaide coach Matthew Nicks praised Jordan Dawson along with Rory Laird. On Dawson, Nicks said: “Jordan had a really strong game where he did it by example. There were a number of times he led his teammates through his team mindset first.”

On Laird, Nicks said: “I thought Lairdy’s game was back where we probably have gotten used to it being. I thought he hunted today as well as he has. That’s big for our group… He’s been solid but probably not at that level we expect from him, which is a super high level.”

Nicks added that Luke Pedlar was subbed out with a dislocated shoulder.

Geelong v Carlton

Geelong coach Chris Scott discussed the fitness and role of Cam Guthrie who scored 104/82 on his return from injury. He said: “His preparation was geared from a long way out to come straight back to AFL football.

“We thought he was solid. He played a lot more back than he normally does. With Stewart out, that made a bit of sense to us. We had that as an option in our planning o bring him back behind the ball. It’s also not unexpected when the heat was on, he was in the midfield.”

Patrick Dangerfield was subbed out and Scott explained that was due to a hamstring injury. He said: “He was subbed off with a hamstring and the club will give a little bit more detail as the week goes on, but I’m not sure at the moment.”

Carlton coach Michael Voss said they picked up no new injuries, while he noted Adam Cerra should return next week and Orazio Fantasia was a late out due to illness. Voss added that Mitch McGovern would be “around the mark” to return next round too.

Fremantle v Western Bulldogs

Fremantle coach Justin Longmuir was full of praise for Nat Fyfe, who 37 disposals following a long period of injury issues. He said: “I think we’ve seen snippets of [that form] and quarters of it, but we probably haven’t seen a sustained game like that from him since he got back.

“But his body of work since day one of pre-season has been phenomenal and I’ve spoken a lot about that work and how it set him up for the season. His ability to bring his teammates into the game and make his possessions contribute to us hitting the scoreboard was really, really good. It’s good to see him get reward for all the persistence and all the effort.”

Josh Draper was subbed out early with a hamstring injury. Longmuir said: “He’s got something in his hamstring. I don’t think it’s overly serious but I haven’t had an update from the doctors.”

Longmuir also praised debutants Patrick Voss and Cooper Simpson – the latter who was sub. He said: “I love the way Vossy competed. He competed his backside off. I don’t think he would’ve got outmarked. He plays with great energy, great work rate, he’s a really good teammate. I thought he played his role really well.

“Coops, when he came on, did a great job for us. I think you would’ve seen some of his strengths with his balance and poise with the ball. I thought he played a good game as well.”

On Jye Amiss, who missed the game with concussion, allowing Voss to play, Longmuir said it was hard to know yet if he’d be available to return.

Dogs coach Luke Beveridge said Tom Liberatore was a late withdrawal due to illness, potentially gastro or food poisoning, rather than anything related to his recent spell in concussion protocols.

Beveridge added Cody Weightman had injured the same elbow he’s been hampered by in the past, with the club potentially taking a long-term approach for his recovery. He also added Jamarra Ugle-Hagan should be available next week, having trained on Saturday back in Melbourne.

Gold Coast v West Coast

West Coast coach Adam Simpson was asked about potentially resting Elliot Yeo, like they did this week with Harley Reid. Simpson replied: “Maybe, (with) the lessons we’ve learned over the past few years about how to look after our players. Tim Kelly is the same.

“We would’ve loved to have played Harley today. We just couldn’t. His body was telling us he shouldn’t. Yeoy will be the same. At some stage he may need a spell. Hopefully not too soon.”

Simpson said Tom Barrass (suspension), Noah Long (hip) and Reid (managed) would all be available to return next week.

Suns coach Damien Hardwick praised second-gamer Jake Rogers who scored 69/98. He said: “He was really exciting. He’s very clean with the ball in hand. His ability to find a target inside 50 is probably something we’ve lacked a little bit. He’s only going to get better as he gets fitter. His fitness level is not where it needs to be, but he’ll work his way through that and get better as the season goes.”

Hardwick said Sam Clohesy had a wrist concern but was “fine”, along with Bailey Humphrey who was subbed out after a head knock, passing his concussion test.

Hawthorn v Sydney

Hawks coach Sam Mitchell was unsure of Mitch Lewis’ availability for next week after being a late withdrawal with his ongoing knee problem. Mitchell noted Sam Butler broke his leg in the VFL and will miss the rest of the year.

Mitchell said Will Day got through the game after a long lay-off with injury, noting “he’ll get better and improve”.

Sydney coach John Longmire indicated Luke Parker was firmly in the mix to return from injury next round. He said: “He came in today and I just had a quick chat with him before I came in here. I said ‘how’d you pull up?’ he said ‘pretty good’, so that’s a pretty good sign. We’ll sit down this week and see what we need to do.”
