Round 2 SuperCoach VC/C picks: Laird bounce back & Darcy to go huge again vs North?

Thursday night’s Carlton-Geelong didn’t offer many juicy VC options so plenty of SuperCoaches are asking where to put the VC/C in Round 2. SuperCoach fiend Jimmy Crawford offers his thoughts.

Jimmy, who you can find on Twitter @Pig_Mentality, doesn’t have the track record of high top 1000 SuperCoach finishes like some of our contributors, but he loves a good captaincy pick, or chasing a high round score, with a career-best 160th round finish.

Vice-Captains

  1. Max Gawn

If you want a free look at big Max as a VC on Friday night, I don’t blame you. But don’t be scared to chuck the C straight on him. Previously against Brisbane he scored 138 in 2021 and 157 in 2020. Gawn faced Brisbane twice last year, scoring 110 (against Darcy Fort) and a worrying 74. Having said that, even Lycett managed an 87 last week against Big O. Gawn could be huge.

  1. Rory Laird

Has scores of 120, 92 and 108 in his last three matches against Richmond. While they don’t jump out at you, and he let everyone down last week, I have faith in a bounce back. Laird is a self-confessed stat counter and he will be looking to avenge himself from his horrible game last week. I would not C him, but if you have a late loophole, he could be a good VC shout.

  1. Clayton Oliver

The Friday night game gives us a good look at all Melbourne and Brisbane players. Of these, Clarry is my pick. He had a respectable score against the Dogs last week and comes into this game averaging 117 in his last 3 against Brisbane which included a 140 in 2022.

Captains

1. Sean Darcy

Averaging 133 in his last 3 against the Roos, including a giant 178 last year. No Xerri means Goldstein will have to play, but Goldy played last year as well. I expect Darcy to dominate this game. He had a massive second half last week after starting slowly.

2. Marcus Bontempelli

Averaging a whopping 145 in his last 3 against the Saints. The flag is those numbers don’t include a Ross Lyon coached defensive-minded St Kilda and there’s the threat of a tag, but with Marcus Windhager not named and Jack Bytel out injured that should be OK. Also, even a tagged Bont can get you 100+. Giddy up.

3. Zach Merrett

Has cleared 136 twice in his last three games against the Suns. Should be a very safe C option to end your weekend.

4. Stephen Coniglio

Scored 140 in his game against the Eagles last year, the first of his big games post Leon Cameron. Cogs is shaping to challenge for the top scoring forward this year, and playing West Coast is an easy match-up for him. Will be shouldering the midfield load without Josh Kelly and Harry Perryman this week.

5. Tom Green

Has only played the Eagles twice in his career for scores of 102 and 123. Green is looking in great touch this year, and without Jelly in the midfield, he will have to take on even more of the burden. Should be very safe as a C in the last game of the round if your VC fails.

POD Captain

Callum Mills

The last time he played Hawthorn he went off for a 214! And his other two previous games were over 100. Seems to be playing a lot less midfield time this year, so only for the brave.
