Stay up to date throughout Round 19 with our rolling injury report from the coaches post-game. With the nine-game round extending from Friday night until Sunday, these snippets of info will be key.
Essendon v Adelaide
Essendon coach Brad Scott offered an update on Jye Caldwell who was subbed out in the fourth quarter. He said: “He’s fine. There’s 15 minutes left on the clock. The rules are there for a reason and for a good reason. He had to have a head injury assessment which takes time. The fact that he passed that and was fine is cold comfort because we just couldn’t wait.
“Obviously we didn’t want to sub him off but we felt like we had no choice. Just the stage of the game, we might’ve got him back for the last 5 minutes but we just made that call.”
Ben Keays may be in hot water from the Match Review Officer for the tackle on Caldwell.
Adelaide lost Jordan Dawson late in the game to concussion after a knock earlier in the contest. Crows coach Matthew Nicks said: “I don’t actually know the incident that happened… we basically get the message upstairs at a point sometime through the last quarter that Jordan’s gone off and he won’t be able to come back on.
“Unfortunately I believe he’s in the protocols now, which means he won’t be available next week. Really, it’s his health that’s most important.”
Nick Murray was subbed out with a serious knee injury, while Jordon Butts exited the game with a sprained foot too.
Rory Laird was also banged up but played out the game. Nicks said: “I think it was more just a cork. I think it was maybe a corkie through the quad. He then found it hard to push off. He wanted to stay out on the ground knowing we were a few men down.”
GWS Giants v Gold Coast
GWS subbed out Isaac Cumming the second quarter and coach Adam Kingsley explained that it was a “minor” hamstring issue. Kingsley said: “He will miss, hopefully not too many, but he will miss.”
St Kilda v West Coast
St Kilda subbed out Liam Henry with a knee concern. Saints coach Ross Lyon said: “There’s no ACL, there’s no ligament (damage), so what is it? Is it a kneecap, a bit of cartilage? But we’re better off just investigating and taking it from there.”
West Coast caretaker coach Jarrad Schofield said they picked up no new injuries and indicated Elliot Yeo and Jake Waterman should return for next weekend’s clash with Fremantle. On Yeo who missed with soreness, Schofield said: “All things going well, yes he’ll return.”
Hawthorn v Collingwood
Nathan Kreuger was subbed out by Collingwood after a head clash with Jai Newcombe in the second quarter and has entered concussion protocols. Pies coach Craig McRae said: “Yep, Kreugs will be out, we’ll wait and see how long it takes him to get through the protocol. It’s unfortunate, he’ll miss at least 14 days.”
The Pies coach was asked about Jordan De Goey who has been battling injuries and whether they’d put him in cotton wool with their season fizzling out. McRae said: “I’m not sure what that looks like. We’re managing him now at training. Within games we play him in different roles and put him in places we think he can impact… I don’t want to get too far ahead of ourselves.”
McRae added that Beau McCreery will be “ready to go” next round and Lachie Schultz should be available after concussion.
Geelong v Western Bulldogs
Geelong coach Chris Scott said Tom Atkins was a late out with a “neural hamstring” concern and added they were “optimistic he should be right”. Shannon Neale’s late withdrawal was due to conditions.
Dogs coach Luke Beveridge said they picked up no injuries.
Port Adelaide v Richmond
Connor Rozee had a hip concern that saw him benched late. Port coach Ken Hinkley explained: “Yeah he got a whack on the hip. Pretty normal footy injuries unfortunately. He’ll be fine. He’ll recover. We didn’t put him back on because we didn’t need to. We manage him well, get him ready for next week he’ll be fine I would imagine for next week.”
Richmond lost ruckman Toby Nankervis after a head knock. Richmond coach Adem Yze said: “We subbed him out. He was going down for a concussion test for 15 minutes. That took about half the last quarter anyway. We decided to sub him. I don’t know the results of that right now, but I think he’ll most likely go into concussion protocols.”
Yze added that Nick Vlastuin and Tim Taranto would be available to return next week.
Brisbane Lions v Sydney
Sydney lost Dane Rampe (calf) and Tom Papley (ankle) in the second quarter. Swans coach John Longmire said they’d both need to be assessed.
Brisbane’s Harris Andrews spent time off in the last quarter for a head injury assessment but returned.
Fremantle v Melbourne
Fremantle ruckman/forward Luke Jackson ended the game on the bench but coach Justin Longmuir played down any concerns. He said: “He just had a corkie in his calf. He was just precautionary.”
Alex Pearce was subbedout on his return from an arm injury. Longmuir said: “It’s sore. The game was done, so we thought we’d sub him off. He has to get a scan and we’ll go from there.”
Matthew Johnson was a late out with foot soreness and will likely miss a “couple of weeks”.
Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin offered an update on Max Gawn who he expects back from injury next week. He said: “Yeah, he’ll play. We were really expecting him to be right. He was very close this week. He got through our main training session, just wasn’t quite where we wanted him to be. We didn’t want to take a risk. Obviously he’s an important player to us.”
Carlton v North Melbourne
Carlton’s Tom De Koning (foot) and Sam Walsh (back) were both injured during the game but manfully soldiered on. Blues coach Michael Voss said: “We’ve got a few that we need to assess. They got through the game OK, but they just needed a few checks.
“‘TDK’ (De Koning) was treated and went back out there, and Walshy got kneed in the back so we’ve got to see how that settles.”
On Walsh’s injury history, Voss said: “No, I don’t think so. He’s had a direct knock there so as far as I’m aware that’s all it currently is.”
