Carmichael omitted, no Mass, Dawson ‘ready to go’ after gastro, Fagan on Coleman

There was good news on Jordan Dawson after a bout of gastro in midweek, while there were updates on Brodie Grundy, Massimo D’Ambrosio and Brynn Teakle, but Josh Carmichael was dropped and Massimo D’Ambrosio missed out.

SUNDAY TEAMS (key ins/outs)

Key ins: Preuss, Briggs, Windhager

Key outs: Hewett (inj), J.Kelly (inj), Flynn, Green (mng), Carmichael, Jamieson

Key holds: Wehr, A.Johnson, Culley, Witherden

Possible subs/emergencies: Carmichael, D’Ambrosio, G.Clark, Jamieson, Campbell

Jordan Dawson (AF $849k SC $602k D/M) had missed training in midweek due to gastro but Adelaide coach Matthew Nicks was bullish that he’d be fine to face Sydney this weekend. Nicks said: “He’s fine. He’s pulled up really well. Missed Wednesday’s main session but that was more precautionary than anything. He trained Thursday. We’ll make sure he’s ready to go.”

Brisbane coach Chris Fagan explained the hamstring injury for Keidean Coleman (AF $657k SC $468k D/F). Fagan said: “He had some hamstring soreness late in the game last week. We brought him off the ground. There’s a little bit of fluid on the scan, not much, but enough for us not to risk him.”

Brodie Grundy (AF $802k SC $544k RUC) will miss this week and may not return next week in the AFL either. Pies coach Craig McRae said: “We’ll ramp them up again, there’s a VFL game next week, if we see fit to play Brodie in that. Time will tell… Potentially (he’ll play VFL), 15, 16 weeks is a long time out of this game.”

Jordan De Goey (AF $617k SC $416k M/F) looks likely to return to the AFL side in Round 20 after a quad issue. McRae said: “In terms of Jordy, he’s looks really fit and ready to go. He’s looking like he’s available next week.” This may negatively impact Josh Carmichael’s (AF $278k SC $102k M/F) job security.

Richmond confirmed Dustin Martin (AF $592k SC $430k M/F) has had an injury which may assist Noah Cumberland’s (AF $268k SC $123k M/F) job security. The club said: “Martin has had a set back in his recovery from a hamstring strain. An aggravation to his hamstring will mean Martin remains sidelined for the medium term.”

GWS caretaker coach Mark McVeigh explained the decision to manage Tom Green (AF $647k SC $442k MID) out of the side. He said: “Tom’s form has been slowly on the decline. I think that’s off the back of a big pre-season, young player, inside contested player, gets hit hard each week. Over the last month it’s got to him a bit.”

McVeigh also discussed who Josh Kelly (AF $822k SC $550k MID) is out with concussion, along with Lachie Whitfield (AF $753k SC $462k D/M) who is absent again with a hip flexor issue. He said: “We know we’ll have Josh Kelly available next week, possibly Lachie Whitfield, possibly Harry Perryman.”

McVeigh spoke about the recalled Braydon Preuss (AF $657k SC $444k RUC). He said: “Really good form in the VFL. He’s gone back and worked really hard at his game. He needed to address a few things in his game to compete at the level. He had to earn his spot. He’s done that.”

Massimo D’Ambrosio (AF $329k SC $195k DEF) was named on Essendon’s extended bench. Dons coach Ben Rutten said on Friday: “Perkins hopefully gets some game time, more likely at VFL level. Massimo as well, played a good game… There’s a few guys who just need a bit more momentum. Pretty happy with our team at the moment.”

Brynn Teakle (AF $192k SC $102k F/R) wasn’t in Port’s side despite being available after injury. Port coach Ken Hinkley said: “It’s about preparation for Orazio and Brynn. We have to give them the best chance to succeed. We’re in a position where we want them to play and both boys excite us but need to be cautious on what that looks like.”
