Round 15 Injury Recap: Stewart set for ban, Butters update, Bevo on English, Gawn flags quick return

Stay up to date throughout the round with our rolling injury report from the coaches post-game. With the nine-game round extending from Thursday night through until Sunday, these snippets of info will be key.

Port Adelaide v Gold Coast

Port coach Ken Hinkley was asked about Zak Butters (AF $614k SC $471k) who missed the game with a knee issue. He said: “He (Butters) would say next week, but we’ll wait and see.”

Hinkley also revealed Scott Lycett (AF $660k SC $497k RUCK) could return as soon as next week after a shoulder injury which may relegate Sam Hayes (AF $408k SC $308k RUCK) out of selection calculations. He said: “We’ve got Scott Lycett probably available next week so that will make it a bit more of an interesting decision.”

Alex Davies (AF $359k SC $226k M/F) was subbed out with a knee issue for the Suns, with coach Stuart Dew saying he’s unlikely for next week.

Collingwood v GWS Giants

Neither side used their sub.

Magpies coach Craig McRae praised ruckman Darcy Cameron (AF $797k SC $519k F/R) who has impressed in the absence of Brodie Grundy, who is due back in the next 4-5 weeks. McRae said: “He’s really stepped up when Brodie’s been out. Marking the ball really well. Futuristically I don’t know (the ruck split when Grundy returns), it’s too early to tell. We’re rapt with how he’s playing.”

McRae also spoke about Jordan De Goey (AF $647k SC $444k M/F) who is on personal leave. He said: “We hope he can get himself in a place where he’s comfortable to step in and be a professional footballer again. We’re hopeful that’s as early as next week, but time will tell.”

GWS caretaker coach Mark McVeigh spoke about the role of Harry Himmelberg (AF $741k SC $548k FWD) moving forward. He said: “Right now, I can’t give you an answer. The temptation is to put Harry Himmelberg forward and see how we go. I’d love to think Haynesy would find his way into our backline but right now the mix suits us.”

He was also asked about Braydon Preuss (AF $657k SC $444k RUCK) and whether his suspensions are a problem and if he’ll return next week. He said: “I don’t think it’s becoming a problem, we’ve got to work on his technique… I’d like to think he’ll come into the side, absolutely. Matty Flynn will also be available, whether we play two rucks, we’ll see. I’d like to think he presents really well Monday and we’ve got that choice.”

North Melbourne v Adelaide

Bailey Scott (AF $574k SC $402k D/F) was subbed out at half-time for North with a hip concern.

Jackson Archer (AF $208k SC $117k DEF) impressed on debut. North coach David Noble said: “The aspect of his defence, level of competition, combativeness, he’s really diligent on his defence. They were the elements that got him in. It was great for him to make his debut.

“At this stage we’ll try settle him in the back-end and … try to handpick the opponents for him as he plays a few more games between now and the end of the year.”

Shane McAdam (AF $512k SC $334k FWD) twisted his ankle late while Will Hamill (AF $329k SC $263k DEF) was subbed out with concussion.

Sydney v St Kilda

Jack Steele (AF $892k SC $590k MID) returned successfully from an AC injury. Saints coach Brett Ratten said: “He was a little bit rusty but his pressure acts were the most on the ground. He looked like the run will do him well.”

Geelong v Richmond

Dion Prestia (AF $728k SC $518k MID) was subbed out with concussion after a heavy bump from Tom Stewart (AF $835k SC $583k DEF) which has been sent directly to the Tribunal, likely leading to a ban of around four weeks.

Gary Rohan (AF $459k SC $376k FWD) was a late out due to illness while Geelong coach Chris Scott said he expects Patrick Dangerfield (AF $619k SC $435k MID) to play next round, having run a 10km session on Friday.

Carlton v Fremantle

Sam Walsh (AF $873k SC $590k MID) starred for the Blues. Carlton coach Michael Voss said: “His game was amazing and he just took it to a completely new level today. He certainly had a game out of the box.”

Matthew Owies (AF $435k SC $312k FWD) was a late withdrawal with a tight calf, while Jordan Boyd (AF $296k SC $217k DEF) picked up an ankle issue and will have scans. Voss said Adam Cerra (AF $673k SC $434k MID) “may” come back next week.

Will Brodie (AF $756k SC $565k M/F) earned praise from Dockers coach Justin Longmuir who said: “He’s been really consistent and brings his strengths to the game. He is clean… Largely he wins it at the coal face and distributes it to the outside reasonably well, I thought he did his role.”

West Coast v Essendon

Darcy Parish (AF $869k SC $607k MID) is likely to return next week after missing a few with a corked calf. Dons coach Ben Rutten: “We’re pretty confident that we’ll get Darcy available next week.”

Western Bulldogs v Hawthorn

Tim English (AF $884k SC $605k F/R) may miss another game due to concussion protocols, with the Dogs taking on Brisbane away on Thursday night. Dogs coach Luke Beveridge said: “There’s a bit to process tonight with boys going down. I’m unsure. Maybe with his history he probably doesn’t go (to Brisbane), we keep him for another week and really look after him.” Ed Richards (AF $566k SC $384k DEF) was subbed out with concussion.

Melbourne v Brisbane Lions

Max Gawn (AF $845k SC $608k RUCK) missed the game due to syndesmosis but told Channel 7 he might be back sooner than expected. He said: “I’m not too bad. Syndesmosis, I’ve never had one. It’s basically day by day. They’re all an option (to return), Adelaide next week, Geelong is an option (Round 17).”

Luke Jackson (AF $537k SC $381k F/R) stepped up impressively in Gawn’s absence winning praise from Dees coach Simon Goodwin who said: “He’s just a different ruckman to Max. His ability to follow up at ground level, he probably lost the hit-outs, it was very instrumental in the game. He tackled really well. You can see the joy he brings.”

Brisbane subbed out Jarryd Lyons (AF $841k SC $506k MID) after copping a heavy blow to his ribs. Lions coach Chris Fagan said: “He got a knock in the ribs. I think it’s maybe rib cartilage, they don’t think it’s a broken bone. Obviously he’ll have some scans and we’ll see how he goes.”

Dayne Zorko (AF $715k SC $430k D/M) is all but certain to return next week from a minor hamstring strain. Fagan said: “He’d be a certainty (next round). He wasn’t too far away from playing tonight. He’s definitely in.”

Zac Bailey (AF $578k SC $399k M/F) should also return after a stint in health and safety protocols. Fagan said: “Obviously Zac will be back. He had a little bit of COVID this week. He should be back training early in the week.”
