SuperCoach Expert Panel: Who are the best trade-in options to replace Jack Steele?

Jack Steele’s shoulder injury is expected to sideline him for 6-8 weeks meaning he is a must-trade player, but given he’s valued at $590k, that’s a lot of money to play with, so we’ve asked the experts on their recommended moves.

HB: What are the best SuperCoach trade options for coaches for Jack Steele?

The SuperCoach Bull @the_SC_bull

Jack Steele was actually on my radar as a trade-in target after posting a 75 back in Round 8. His AC injury comes at a horrible time as we near the dreaded byes. The saving grace is that at $590k you have plenty of options to sideways to. I will suggest one player in each line (via DPP links) as like me you may want to fix your rookies up on field with a premo in another line.

Sam Docherty (SC $554k DEF) is a solid choice for DEF and will net you just under $40k. His numbers have been incredible and he is currently the 2nd ranked defender for total points and 5th for average.

In the MID it’s hard to go past Christian Petracca (SC $578k MID). He is the type of explosive player who can completely tear a game open, and if his 2 goals 4 behind 136 point score from the weekend is anything to go by, a 150+ is on the horizon. Again you will net around $12k for Trac.

In the FWD I like the look of Dusty Martin (SC $509k M/F), a player who looks to have not missed a beat since returning last weekend. With scores of 108, 83 (spent most of the game forward), and 119 I can see him going big over the next fortnight. Priced at $509k, Dusty will net you $80k which you can use to upgrade in another line. He should come off the byes as the Dusty we know and love, but if you want to strengthen your forward-line this week, he is one of the top options.

Jack Steele was one of my first picked players for me this season and I love they way he goes about it so I’m shattered with this news! For me I am going straight to Touk Miller (SC $632k MID) . Not exactly out of the box but love his consistency and that’s what I want when filling my last mid premo spot. I have never been a Touk owner and I am seriously excited about the prospect!

Some other options I like around his price range are Josh Kelly (SC $580k MID) as a POD at 7%. Huge ceiling with two scores 150+ and lowest score of 81. Direct swaps also that deserve a mention are Christian Petracca (SC $578k MID) and Marcus Bontempelli (SC $573k MID) (chance of DPP too). These two are super exciting to watch which makes it even more enjoyable to own.

Dylan Bolch @BolchDylan

I made the unfortunate decision to trade Steele into my team a fortnight ago and therefore copped both of his scores in the 70s. I will personally be trading in Rory Laird (SC $634k MID), who is somehow in just 5% of sides at the time of writing. Laird missed the first fortnight of the season with a hand injury but has since come back in and been at his SuperCoach best. Excluding a 93 in his comeback game, Laird’s six games have all yielded scores 116+. I also think it is worth looking in other lines for upgrades, using dual-position players.

James Sicily (SC $593k DEF)has put his injury concerns behind him and is possibly in All-Australian contention this season. Hawthorn’s interim skipper has played every game this year for an average of 115 points per game, with just one score sub 100, an 84 against Port Adelaide back in Round 2. He’s already in approximately 45% of teams, but he is probably a must-have now. It’s also worth keeping an eye on Bulldogs pair Marcus Bontempelli (SC $573k MID) and Bailey Smith (SC $532k MID) who could gain FWD status in the next round of price changes.

Steele was a starting pick of mine, and it is tricky to replace a mid who at his best is a lock for top 6-8 come season’s end. However, there are a number of good options across all lines to consider as his replacement. In the midfield, I would be eyeing off Rory Laird (SC $634k MID, 122.9 avg) as well as Darcy Parish (SC $613k MID, 114.7 avg) in the category of 600k+ mids, as both of these players are ultra consistent, whilst also having a high enough ceiling to adequately replace Steele.

As a value option, Christian Petracca (SC $578k MID, 116.8 avg) probably has the highest ceiling of the 3, and with a soft fixture this week versus North Melbourne, as well as the last bye, provides a great value option for coaches who are still looking to save some cash.

But replacements do not need to be restricted to midfielders, and players like George Hewett (SC $550k DEF/MID, 117.9 avg) and Sam Docherty (SC $554k DEF, 113.7 avg) are still great options to replace Steele with as these two will likely be top six defenders come season end. My main advice is to follow your bye structure, and if trading Steele to a R13 or R14 bye premium allows you have more bye flexibility and scoring potential, then it is wise to do so.
