Tom Mitchell (AF $803k SC $526k MID) is confirmed to play this round after missing out last weekend due to being managed. Hawthorn coach Sam Mitchell: “Tommy will definitely play and start in the centre bounce. He is a very important part of our team and midfield.

“We’ve been struggling a little bit in that area, so really looking forward to a bit of extra freshness into Tommy, hopefully he can produce his best footy. He got sick and didn’t really get over it, then played and went into a hole after that. He just hadn’t been his normal energetic self; normally he is running around like a lunatic, always doing extras. It was a good idea to give him that circuit breaker.”

Mitchell also spoke about the midfield role of Will Day (AF $549k SC $391k DEF). He said: “Last week Will played wing and inside mid. We ended up using him in defence later in the game, but basically the whole game as a midfielder which was a good progression for him.”

There was some doubt about Jordan Ridley (AF $623k SC $492k DEF) due to leg soreness. Essendon coach Ben Rutten said: “I think he’ll train. We’re pretty confident he’ll play. He’s OK, he’s just a bit on light duties. He should do a lot of the session.” He’s since been named.

Rutten also provided an update on the shoulder injury to Jye Caldwell (AF $572k SC $375k MID). He said: “He’s pulled up OK. He’s a bit sore. We’ll keep giving him a bit more time to get some range and movement. See how his strength is. Hopefully he can get up.” He’s since been ruled out.

Josh Gibcus (AF $378k SC $293k DEF) is out of health and safety protocols. Tigers Physical Performance Manager Peter Burge: “It’s probably a little blessing in disguise for him being an 18-year-old who hasn’t played a lot of footy over the past two years given COVID… He’s pretty fresh, he trained really well today and he’ll come into consideration for this weekend.” He’s since been named.

Carlton coach Michael Voss praised George Hewett (AF $777k SC $550k D/M) who returned last round from injury. Voss said: “He’s been magnificent for us and been extremely reliable in the way he’s performed. He’s gelled so well with our group, he’s built a strong connection with us and we’ll support him when we need to.”

Fremantle coach Justin Longmuir was still unsure about the return of Nat Fyfe (AF $709k SC $546k MID). He said: “He’s going to ramp up his training today in full team training, he’ll join in on 18 on 18. We’ll see how he gets through the first couple of weeks of full training to see what the best plan is for him.”
