Hawthorn coach Sam Mitchell declared Ned Reeves (AF $431k SC $288k RUCK) was not ruled out of next week despite a popped shoulder, while Max Lynch (AF $372k SC $207k RUCK) may come into consideration after an anaphylactic reaction to a bee sting on the weekend.

Essendon v Fremantle

Dons coach Ben Rutten praised the debutant of Ben Hobbs (AF $266k SC $153k MID). He said: “We got Hobbs on the ball in that last quarter. I thought he played a really good game. For a first gamer, we got a really nice taste of what we’ll see from Hobbs for a long career.”

Carlton v Port Adelaide

Carlton coach Michael Voss offered an update on the hamstring injury to Patrick Cripps (AF $803k SC $525k MID). He said: “He’ll be an assess this week but a good chance. We’ll wait and see in the first couple of days of this week. Clearly he’s got to train. We’ll probably know more as the week goes.”

Port coach Ken Hinkley spoke about Ollie Wines (AF $883k SC $555k MID) who missed the game due to a heart condition. He said: “We’re optimistic. We’ll make sure Ollie is right though. The one thing we’ve got to be cautious of is this is Ollie’s health and we need make sure he’s right. As I sit here now we expect him to play next week.”

Hinkley also spoke about debutant Sam Hayes (AF $190k SC $123k RUCK). He said: “It’s a big ask for a young ruck. There’s a lot of learning for Sam. This is the greatest step in his career. Sam Hayes wasn’t anything to do with why we had a poor first-half. I was really proud of him.”

Melbourne v GWS Giants

Matt Flynn (AF $588k SC $473k RUCK) impressed in the ruck in the absence of the suspended Braydon Preuss (AF $467k SC $204k RUCK), which may impact the latter’s role or selection next week

GWS coach Leon Cameron said: “I thought Flynny contributed in a good way. He was up against two monsters.”

Finn Callaghan (AF $286k SC $198k MID) was solid on debut. Cameron said: “There were some little wins tonight. Finn, comes in and plays his 1st game against the best side. He didn’t look out of order out there. I thought he contributed in a good way.”

Adelaide v Richmond

Hugo Ralphsmith (AF $351k SC $264k M/F) was subbed off late. Tigers coach Damien Hardwick said: “He just got a whack to the ribs. He struggled for breath. I’m not sure what that’ll be. We’ll get scans on that. Hopefully he puts his hand up for next week but we’re not too sure at this stage.”

Adelaide coach Matthew Nicks also said Rory Sloane (AF $701k SC $504k MID) would undergo scans on a worrying knee injury.

Lade also lauded Jade Gresham (AF $623k SC $364k M/F) when he said: “Gresh was pretty good again. He flips his time between midfield & forward and has an impact in both. He got the ball rolling through stoppages. To get 2 goals was a big impact.”

Lade also said Zak Jones (AF $743k SC $503k MID) was a week-to-week proposition after a good VFL game, which may impact Marcus Windhager’s (AF $218k SC $117k M/F) selection.

Suns coach Stuart Dew defended the performances of Matt Rowell (AF $572k SC $401k MID). He said: “When you watch him closely, he’s working very hard. Teams put more time into him. We’ve got to remember this lad has played under 20 games. We love the way Matt plays.”

Dew also said Mabior Chol (AF $493k SC $357k RUCK) was subbed out due to groin soreness while David Swallow (AF $596k SC $406k MID) had a dislocated finger.

West Coast v Sydney

Isaac Heeney (AF $777k SC $528k FWD) maintained his good form, earning praise from Sydney coach John Longmire, who said: “He has been consistent. Wherever we have needed him; he’s played forward, deep, high, midfield, inside, on the wing… It’s been important for him to change up in a game and he’s a real threat wherever he is.”

North Melbourne v Western Bulldogs

Aaron Hall (AF $872k SC $546k DEF) was subbed out with a hamstring injury. North coach David Noble said: “I haven’t spoken to the medicos. I’ve seen him walking around with ice. Coming off a six-day break, we’re going into a nine, obviously I don’t think he’ll be available but I don’t have an update yet.”

Tristan Xerri (AF $457k SC $315k FWD) was lauded by Noble for his progression. He said: “It’s pretty quick (development). I thought he was probably in our top 3-4 performers over pre-season. That’s now presenting really well in his footy. I think his progression has been great.”

Jack Mahony (AF $499k SC $321k FWD) went off with an ankle injury too, while the Dogs lost Riley Garcia (AF $345k SC $270k FWD) to a serious knee injury.

Jackson Macrae (AF $920k SC $675k MID) spent time on the sidelines undergoing a concussion test. Dogs coach Luke Beveridge explained: “I think it’s an example of how conservative our medical staff need to be. They looked at some vision of him getting off the ground and thought he wasn’t stable and needed to get checked on.”

Bailey Smith (AF $872k SC $500k MID) maintained his hot form with 40+ disposals. Beveridge said: “He’s had a significant start to the year. He’s causing some headaches for the opposition and playing more game-time than he ever has. He’s a young fella who’s ready to take on the rigours of the game.”

Brisbane Lions v Collingwood

Lions coach Chris Fagan hailed Lachie Neale (AF $875k SC $632k MID) for his impact. He said: “He was the one that really got us going around clearance and around contested ball. He put the team on his shoulders and carried us I reckon, a little bit.”

Darcy Cameron (AF $509k SC $373k FWD) was subbed out for the Pies with a rib injury.
