Stars confirm import signing, Renegades name shock debutant, Boyce out
The Melbourne Stars confirmed the signing of Haris Rauf late in the day, while the Melbourne Renegades named a shock debutant and also revealed spinner Cameron Boyce is out.
The Sydney Thunder named an extended 17-man squad which didn’t offer many insights, except that Jason Sangha ($62k BAT) won’t play due to a hamstring injury.
The Thunder said in a statement: “Jason Sangha, who injured his hamstring while training for the NSW Sheffield Shield team last month, is expected to be available for selection around the Christmas period.”
Thunder squad: Callum Ferguson (c), Jonathan Cook, Ben Cutting, Ollie Davies, Brendan Doggett, Matt Gilkes, Chris Green, Alex Hales, Baxter Holt, Usman Khawaja, Nathan McAndrew, Adam Milne, Arjun Nair, Alex Ross, Daniel Sams, Tanveer Sangha, Chris Tremain
Their opponents, the Stars will use the squad they named on Thursday for Friday’s game.
However, there was a bit more flesh on the bones from Saturday’s second game down in Hobart, with Renegades captain Aaron Finch ($184k BAT) declaring himself fit to play.
Finch said: “My fitness is 100 per cent good to go. I had a little niggle in my glute which was a small strain. There was a lot of sharp pain which is why I missed the second T20I. The pain went right down. No issue going into tomorrow night.”
The Gades skipper also revealed 18-year-old batsman Jake Fraser-McGurk ($42k BAT) will make his debut.
Finch said: “Yes he will (play tomorrow). He’s obviously super talented. He’s got all the shots and the confidence in the world.”
The Gades also revealed Cameron Boyce ($121k BWL) has a health condition and won’t play. That opens the door for Jon Holland ($42k BWL).
In a club statement, the Gades said: “Cameron Boyce will miss the start of the season as he battles a health condition. It’s hoped Boyce will be available later this month.”
Renegades squad: Aaron Finch (c), Brody Couch, Zak Evans, Jake Fraser-McGurk, Sam Harper, Mackenzie Harvey, Peter Hatzoglou, Jon Holland, Benny Howell, Josh Lalor, Shaun Marsh, Mitch Perry, Jack Prestwidge, Kane Richardson, Rilee Rossouw, Beau Webster
There’s still no certainty about Mitch Marsh ($164k BAT/BWL) playing for the Scorchers as he tries to overcome an ankle injury as they also named an extended squad with him in it.
Scorchers squad: Fawad Ahmad, Cameron Bancroft, Jason Behrendorff, Joe Clarke, Aaron Hardie, Josh Inglis, Matt Kelly, Mitch Marsh, Colin Munro, Joel Paris, Kurtis Patterson, Jhye Richardson, Corey Rocchiccioli, Ashton Turner, Andrew Tye, Sam Whiteman
On the eve of their game, the Melbourne Stars confirmed the signing of Haris Rauf ($ TBC – BWL), with the Pakistani set to arrive in January and be available until the start of February.
Stars coach Dave Hussey said: “His energy was fantastic for the team and we’re really pleased to have him back. Haris gives us another dimension and threat in our bowling attack with his raw pace.”
Two games are on but we’ll get more extended squads for Sunday’s matches between the Adelaide Strikers and Hobart Hurricanes, followed by the Sixers and Gades.
