Morkel & Wildermuth ruled out, Stoinis named for Stars, Finch declared fit

Morne Morkel and Jack Wildermuth were both ruled out of Friday’s clash with the Melbourne Stars who named Marcus Stoinis, while Aaron Finch was declared fit for Saturday.

SQUAD NEWS

The Stars named a 14-man squad for Friday’s clash with Brisbane Heat in Canberra, including bargain Liam Hatcher ($42k BWL) and Marcus Stoinis ($185k BAT/BWL) despite fears he’ll miss with injury. Jackson Coleman is out injured.

Stars squad: Maxwell (c), Cartwright, Coulter-Nile, Dunk, Fletcher, Gotch, Hatcher, Hinchliffe, Hussain, Larkin, O’Connell, Stanlake, Stoinis, Zampa

Brisbane Heat dropped their squad a little later but Morne Morkel ($138k BWL) had already been ruled out of their season opener on Friday due to an ankle injury.

Morkel said: “Unfortunately I’m still nursing an ankle injury at the moment. Hopefully I can be on the park as soon as possible.”

Jack Wildermuth ($62k BAT/BWL) won’t play also, after being drafted into the Australia A squad as Moises Henriques replacement for the game against India A from December 11-13. His selection opens the door for James Bazley ($42k BAT/BWL) and/or Xavier Bartlett ($42k BWL).

Heat squad: Bartlett, Bazley, Bryant, Cooper, Heazlett, Kuhnemann, Lawrence, Laughlin, Lynn (c), Peirson, Milenko, Sully, Wood

UPDATES

Back to Moises Henriques ($100k BAT/BWL), he’s suffered a low-grade left hamstring strain which he picked up on Australia duty. He’ll miss the Australia A game and miss the Sixers’ first two games.

Aaron Finch ($184k BAT) will play for the Melbourne Renegades in their Round 1 match on Saturday despite a niggle during Australia’s recent T20I series.

Gades coach Michael Klinger said: “He’s definitely going to be playing. He came into Hobart last night and obviously played the last T20I game with Australia and has been passed fit. He’s ready to go.”

Klinger also revealed Imran Tahir ($175k BWL) will arrive later than expected. Klinger said: “He’s likely to come out just before Christmas. He’ll be available for at least our last five, potentially seven games, and also finals, if and when we qualify.”

Tahir’s delayed arrival is increasingly relevant as Noor Ahmad ($62k BWL) is his replacement player. Klinger said about Noor: “I’m excited to let him loose. A lot of Australians in the past have struggled against wrist spin. He could have a big impact on the tournament.”

The Sixers have unveiled England international fast bowler Jake Ball ($125k BWL) as their new signing to replace Tom Curran.

He was the leading wicket-taker in the 2020 t20 Blast in the UK and played alongside Dan Christian. He’ll fly to Australia from South Africa and be available after Christmas.
