Docherty doubts grow, Simpkin ‘good to go’, Coniglio dropped, GWS debutant named

Jy Simpkin (AF $597k SC $421k MID/FWD) has been given the green light to play despite concerns over concussion.
North Football General Manager Brady Rawlings said: “Jy Simpkin is good to go. The vision looked really serious but he’s passed all the tests and protocols this week.”
Jack Mahony (AF $312k SC $244k MID/FWD) and Tristan Xerri (AF $212k SC $188k RUCK/FWD) both miss out again with injury.
Tobe Watson (AF $255k SC $155k DEF) gets a recall for Freo, while there’s no space for Liam Henry (AF $273k SC 170k FWD).
Pete Ladhams (AF $575k SC $459k RUCK) returns straight back after suspension for Port. Power coach Ken Hinkley said: “I can’t fault the way Ladhams has gone about it since his suspension.”
Mitch Hibberd gets a call-up for Essendon while Sam Draper has held his spot despite the return of Joe Daniher and Andrew Phillips.
Josh Kelly (AF $779k SC $587k MID) and Zac Williams (AF $587k SC $457k DEF) have both been named by GWS as promised after minor injuries.
Stephen Coniglio (AF $663k SC $463k MID) was the big shock omission for GWS, who’ve made mass changes including the management of well-owned forward Jake Riccardi (AF $381k SC $256k FWD).
GWS Football General Manager Jason McCartney said: “Stephen is the first to admit that his form hasn’t been where he’d like it to be. We see this as a speed bump in the road. He’s a quality man and he’ll bounce back.”
Amid all the changes, GWS named Jack Buckley (AF $170k SC $123k MID/FWD) as a debutant.
GWS named Jack Buckley (AF $170k SC $123k MID/FWD) in their 22 among eight changes. He is a 22-year-old 193cm utility, who was a Category B rookie and is in his third season at the club.
Giants coach Leon Cameron said: “He has a huge work-rate and great defensive pressure.”
The concerns about Sam Docherty (AF $620k SC $486k DEF) playing on Sunday grew further after some non-committal comments from Carlton coach David Teague about his calf issue.
Addressing questions about Docherty and Jack Martin (AF $537k SC $391k MID/FWD), Teague said: “Not sure at the moment. We train today and tomorrow. We’ll probably test them (Docherty & Martin) tomorrow.
“Sam Docherty is adamant that he’ll play. Jack Martin I haven’t spoken to but we’ll have to wait and see.”
COUPLE OF CROWS
Jordon Butts (AF $189k SC $123k DEF) has been confirmed to play for Adelaide against Carlton on Sunday.
Crows coach Matthew Nicks said: “We’ll bring in Butts for Talia. Butts is coming off his debut where he unfortunately didn’t get to play after that so we’re glad to get him back in.”
Will Hamill (AF $286k SC $210k DEF) seems unlikely as he continues to recover from a concussion.
Nicks said: “He’s right in the mix. We’ve been conservative in that space with injury prevention & not taking any risks… He may be a chance this week, possibly the week after.”
Hawthorn coach Alastair Clarkson remained vague about blooding some rookies when talking about the potential return of Jaeger O’Meara (AF $690k SC $450k MID) along with Jon Patton (AF $247k SC $213k RUCK/FWD) and Jarman Impey (AF $401k SC $256k DEF).
“We’re not going to take any unnecessary risks. Jaeger has now missed four-five with that broken hand that we were hopeful would be a one-two week injury. If he’s right to go, he’ll play.
“All three of those guys will be tests to play. It’s still two days until we play. They’re all in the mix to play. Is it really worth it? Same with Jarman and Jonny Patton.
“Over the course of the last two to three years, they’ve had injury interruptions to their careers, so for the sake of one-two games to come back, maybe we’re better off going with young kids.”
Once-popular rookie Connor Budarick (AF $297k SC $219k MID/FWD) is done for 2020 with an injured collarbone.
Suns Head Physio Lindsay Bull said: “Connor suffered a fracture to his clavicle, or collarbone, in the game in the third quarter after a bump. He’ll be in a sling for a couple of weeks and we’ll go from there.”
Another early season fave Harley Bennell (AF $324k SC $226k MID) isn’t likely to get another look-in in 2020.
Dees coach Simon Goodwin said: “Harley is getting better and better every week. He’s training to a higher standard now… We see him as a long-term prospect.”
Goodwin also confirmed Angus Brayshaw (AF $609k SC $435k MID) is officially done for 2020 with his foot injury as he’ll undergo surgery back in Melbourne.
Brisbane received good news on the injury front with Lincoln McCarthy (AF $413k SC $339k FWD) a chance to play this round despite a cork, while Jarrod Berry (AF $611k SC $497k MID) may be back for the AFL finals, which isn’t helpful for AFL Fantasy or SuperCoach coaches.
Nathan Buckley will speak to the media while the Sunday teams will be confirmed ahead of the third game of the day, between GWS and Melbourne.
