R17 Rolling Injury Report: Docherty re-injured, No guarantees for Coniglio
Stay up to date throughout the round with our rolling injury report from the coaches post-game. With the fixtures coming thick, fast and ad-hoc, more than ever, these snippets of info will be key.
Collingwood v Gold Coast
Sean Lemmens (AF 326k SC 251k MID/FWD) was injured early with a quad problem. Suns coach Stuart Dew said: “Lemmens had a cork early. We threw up putting him back out there but he just wasn’t right.”
Sydney v Brisbane Lions
Lewis Taylor (AF $436k SC $283k MID) hurt his foot and Sydney coach John Longmire said: “Early in the game he was off in the first quarter and didn’t come back on.” Longmire said debutant Joel Amartey (AF $170k SC $123k RUCK) was “sore”.
Lions coach Chris Fagan said Mitch Robinson (AF $452k SC $314k MID) was OK despite a heavy knock. Fagan said: “He fell awkwardly and hurt his neck a little bit but the medico checked him out and he was OK.”
Hawthorn v Western Bulldogs
Toby McLean (AF $498k SC $355k FWD) suffered a suspected ACL injury that required him to be stretchered off. Dogs coach Luke Beveridge said: “We think it’s more on the serious side. The plan is probably to send him back to Melbourne to scan it and see what the damage is.”
Hawthorn late withdrawals James Frawley (back) (AF $267k SC $266k DEF) and Tom Scully (illness) (AF $428k SC $295k MID) were both expected to play next round.
Carlton v Adelaide
Sam Docherty (AF $620k SC $486k DEF) re-injured the calf which he aggravated last round and didn’t return after going off in the first quarter. Carlton coach David Teague said: “I don’t know exactly what it is. He’s hurt it. It wasn’t a corkie, it’s a muscle injury.”
Teague mentioned Zac Fisher (AF $498k SC $384k FWD) hurt his shoulder but returned and would likely be OK.
GWS Giants v Melbourne
No new injuries, but GWS coach Leon Cameron offered no guarantees on a return for Stephen Coniglio (AF $663k SC $463k MID). He said: “Myself, Stephen and our match committee understand he’s been out of form – and it’s been for a few weeks.
“We made that really tough call, but if there have to be more tough calls next week, there will be, because our season’s been like that. I have no doubt with his character he will, and he’ll train well this week and he’ll want to put his hand up, but when you’ve been good for two weeks and bad for two weeks, you can’t have anyone who’s safe.”
Port Adelaide v Essendon
No new injuries. Looking to next round, Port coach Ken Hinkley said they wouldn’t look to rest players against Collingwood in Round 18.
North Melbourne v Fremantle
Freo’s Brennan Cox (AF $360k SC $382k DEF) was the only concern with a jarred AC joint but coach Justin Longmuir was confident he’d be OK.
Geelong v Richmond
The return of Joel Selwood (AF $501k SC $375k MID) and Gary Ablett (AF $553k SC $417k FWD) is looming or the Cats. Geelong coach Chris Scott said: “As of today I would expect them both to play but there’s nine days until our next game.”
Richmond lost forward Tom Lynch (AF $410k SC $341k FWD) to a hamstring injury which will likely sideline him for a few weeks. Tigers coach Damien Hardwick said: “Tom’s got a hamstring, we’re not quite sure of the severity of that at the moment, he’ll probably have scans on that on Monday also.”
The club released a statement on Saturday after scans confirmed a hamstring strain and immediately ruled him out of the Tigers’ Round 18 match against Adelaide.
The Tigers also lost big man Ivan Soldo (AF $501k SC $390k RUCK) to a suspected ACL injury which would end his season. Hardwick said: “Soldo we think has got a significant knee injury, we’ll wait to confirm that via scans… I think it looks like (an ACL) at this stage.”
Richmond have since confirmed it is an ACL injury and he’s also torn his medial ligament too, meaning 12 months out.
Hardwick said Mabior Chol (AF $321k SC $312k RUCK/FWD) was a candidate to replace Soldo, while he said David Astbury (AF $469k SC $414k DEF) was close to a return and Josh Caddy (AF $479k SC $328k MID) was available again.
He also said Shane Edwards (AF $516k SC $428k DEF/MID) was a big chance to play in Round 18 after returning to the hub. Hardwick said: “Edwards will be available. He gets out of quarantine on Tuesday. He’ll hopefully come back into the side.”
St Kilda v West Coast
Jeremy McGovern (AF $522k SC $457k DEF) went off late int he second quarter with a bad hamstring injury. West Coast coach Adam Simpson said: “It didn’t look like a twinge but we’ll find out in the next couple of days.”
Simpson added that they’ll get Dom Sheed (AF $603k SC $407k MID) back next week and Brendon Ah Chee (AF $349k SC $277k MID) is available.
