Brisbane Lions v Gold Coast

Jarrod Berry (AF $611k SC $497k DEF) appeared to dislocate his shoulder in the second quarter. Lions coach Chris Fagan said: “He’ll have to have some scans on that. Fingers crossed it’s a 2-3 weeker not a season ender. He convinced me his shoulder was pretty good. I’m hopeful.”

Brandon Starcevich (AF $317k SC $282k DEF) suffered an early concussion and has been ruled out of Brisbane’s next game. Fagan said: “Brandon Starcevich fell awkwardly and got some concussion. Under the protocols of the AFL he won’t be available because we’ve got to play in four days time.”

Lincoln McCarthy (AF $413k SC $339k DEF) copped a cork but played out the game, albeit with a limp. Fagan said: “He’ll be touch and go for weekend as well.”

Fagan said Grant Birchall (AF $455k SC $339k DEF) had been rested and would be available next round.

Carlton v Sydney

Jack Martin (AF $544k SC $430k MID/FWD) was iced up in the last quarter with a calf complaint. Blues coach David Teague said: “He’s hurt a calf, I don’t know whether it was a corkie or a calf but he was moving around alright in there.”

Nick Blakey (AF $440k SC $331k FWD) hurt his shoulder in the third quarter. Swans coach John Longmire said: “I don’t know, I haven’t spoken to the medical staff. He seemed a bit sore. We’ve come off a five-day break & we play again on Sunday so if there’s a few sore boys we’ll need to look out someone else.”

Adelaide v GWS Giants

GWS coach Leon Cameron said there was no guarantee Josh Kelly (AF $779k SC $587k MID) would return from concussion next round.

Cameron said: “Three-four days ago he was a bit scratchy but I think he’s starting the turn the corner. He’s got to get through a block of training and some contact before the doctors give him the green light.”

Zac Williams (AF $587k SC $457k DEF) is also in the mix to return from an achilles problem. Cameron said: “He has to tick a few things off. He’s a bit banged up. His achilles flared up.

“We don’t think it’s a significant amount of time he’ll miss out. If he gets through on Thursday-Friday he’ll come back in. We’re hoping that’s (the same) for Brent Daniels (AF $442k SC $366k FWD) and Harry Perryman (AF $592k SC $440k MID) as well.. they’ve had minor injuries.”

Aidan Corr (AF $398k SC $288k DEF) landed awkwardly on his ankle in the third quarter and is in doubt for next round. Cameron said: “He’s rolled it pretty badly. He was talking about coming back on the last but we didn’t want to risk it. Who knows whether he’ll get up for Saturday? We’ll wait and see.”

Melbourne v Fremantle

Angus Brayshaw (AF $609k SC $435k MID) may not be done just yet, with Dees coach Simon Goodwin indicating he may be a chance to play next round despite his ligament damage.

Goodwin said: “We’ll probably get a few back this week. James Harmes (AF $407k SC $309k MID) might be a chance, Tom Sparrow (AF $363k SC $282k FWD), Luke Jackson (AF $313k SC $264k RUCK), maybe Angus as well, we’ll just wait and see.”

Freo lost Taylin Duman (AF $401k SC $341k DEF) to a rolled ankle. Coach Justin Longmuir said “hopefully he comes up” for next round.

Western Bulldogs v West Coast

Nic Naitanui (AF $596k SC $594k RUCK) was a late withdrawal for West Coast with back soreness but coach Adam Simpson said he’d be back for their next game against St Kilda on Thursday.

Simpson said: “It was touch and go. He’s just a bit sorer than what he’s been. We’ve got five games in 19 days so it would’ve been reckless to play him every game. The moment we saw he was tight he thought it was a cue to give him a spell. He’s feeling pretty good, good enough to play next week that’s for sure.”

Mark Hutchings (AF $364k SC $255k MID) injured his hamstring in the second term and didn’t return. Simpson said “I suspect he won’t be playing for a while.”

Jeremy McGovern (AF $545k SC $487k DEF) will have a scan after re-injuring his previous thumb injury while Simpson provided an update on Elliot Yeo‘s (AF $646k SC $473k MID) potential return against North Melbourne in Round 18.

Simpson said: “We’re aiming for hopefully some minutes against North. But that’s a 50-50 call. We won’t rush him but we need him.”

The Eagles later revealed they’d lost Jack Redden (AF $514k SC $370k MID) to a thumb injury likely for the rest of the season.

Geelong v Essendon

Zach Tuohy (AF $563k SC $374k DEF) was a late withdrawal with a knee complaint but Geelong coach Chris Scott said he was “99.9% chance” to play next round. Likewise Rhys Stanley (AF $580k SC $504k RUCK) with an adductor issue and Scott said he was 95% chance to play next round.

Gary Rohan (AF $468k SC $412k FWD) was taken off late but Scott said he’s fine. Scott said: “He had a bit of a tight glute. It was completely precautionary so he’s fine. He’s fine (to play Friday).” Scott said Joel Selwood (AF $501k SC $375k MID) could play next round too.

Irving Mosquito (AF $245k SC $199k FWD) suffered a suspected ACL injury. Bombers coach John Worsfold: “It’s not looking that good, the mechanism of it all. Possibly an ACL but we’ll confirm that in the next day or so.”

St Kilda v Hawthorn

James Worpel (AF $748k SC $451k MID) suffered a shoulder injury after a heavy collision. Hawks coach Alastair Clarkson said: “He’s got an AC joint. He’s done for the year. He’ll miss our last 2 games. He won’t recover in time to play again.”

Josh Morris (AF $205k SC $131k FWD) appeared to struggle with a calf problem but Clarkson dismissed any injury fears. Clarkson said: “He’s OK, just a young kid trying to find pace with the game and was cramping up. He’ll be fine.”

St Kilda managed Max King (AF $360k SC $317k FWD) who was a late withdrawal. Saints coach Brett Ratten: “Max needed a spell. He was right on the edge. It was tempting to play him as he influences games… Yep (he’ll be back next round).”

North Melbourne v Port Adelaide

Well-owned DPP Jy Simpkin (AF $629k SC $438k MID/FWD) copped a big hit and suffered a concussion which ended his game prematurely.

North coach Rhyce Shaw said: “By all reports he’s really good. He seems OK but the medical staff saw the vision and that was it. He seems in good health but we’ll go through the proper process.”

The Kangas play Fremantle next round on Saturday, given him seven days to recover.

Ryan Burton (AF $537k SC $367k DEF) injured his quad again in the first quarter and didn’t return. Port coach Ken Hinkley said: “Burto looks like he’s given his quad a little nick again potentially. We won’t know until we get it scanned.

“He doesn’t think it’s up high like it was last time which is a good result for us. We won’t make any diagnosis until we get the information we need.”

Pete Ladhams (AF $575k SC $459k RUCK) is no lock to return from his suspension, with Hinkley saying: “We’ll work through that. We won’t make any commitments now but we like the idea of having another tall in our front half and that’s an option with Pete.”

Zak Butters (AF $525k SC $434k FWD) has also been charged with engaging in Rough Conduct against Simpkin in the aforementioned incident and been offered a two-game ban.
