R7 Rolling Injury Report: Bontempelli ‘fine’, Simpkin ankle roll

There’s been injury scares to Marcus Bontempelli and Jy Simpkin this round, while Joel Selwood and Jordan De Goey will both miss games due to new injuries too. Stay tuned throughout the round for the latest updates.

Adelaide v St Kilda
St Kilda’s Josh Battle (AF $506k SC $391k DEF) didn’t see out the game due to a cheekbone/concussion issue following a clash with teammate Paddy Ryder. Saints coach Brett Ratten said he’d be touch and go for next round but needed scans.

Fremantle v West Coast
Eagles skipper Luke Shuey (AF $671k SC $507k MID) was a late out but coach Adam Simpson said “he was really close” and “will definitely play next week”.

Hawthorn v Melbourne
The Hawks lost another key forward with Tim O’Brien (AF $386k SC $330k DEF/FWD) hurting his ankle. Hawthorn coach Alastair Clarkson said he’d be “extremely doubtful” for next round but would need scans to know the full extent of the injury.

Carlton v Port Adelaide
Ryan Burton (AF $531k SC $387k DEF) and Steven Motlop (AF $474k SC $328k FWD) both went down injured, with quad and ankle issues, with the latter on crutches post-game.

On Burton, Port coach Ken Hinkley said: “We’ll assess properly once we’re back but he’s given his quad a little nick. He’ll be in some doubt.”

On Motlop, Hinkley added: “Mots rolled his ankle. We won’t know much about that until we get back.”

Hinkley also provided an update on Scott Lycett (AF $645k SC $538k RUCK) who missed the game with knee soreness.

Hinkley said: “He’s some risk for next week, no doubt about that. His scan, I’m not sure of the result on Friday. He trained Friday so it’s not too bad but he couldn’t go to top gear.”

Richmond v North Melbourne
Josh Caddy (AF $539k SC $387k MID/FWD) was the big casualty for the Tigers, appearing to suffer a significant hamstring injury early in the second quarter which will rule him out for “the next couple of weeks” at least.

Tigers coach Damien Hardwick said: “We’re not too sure at this stage. We’ll get scans tomorrow or the day after & assess that. He obviously won’t play for the next couple of weeks.

“He took forever to get off the ground which indicates it is probably significant.”

Hardwick also provided an update on David Astbury‘s (AF $469k SC $414k DEF) knee injury, saying he’ll be “available to play” next round, but likely ruled out Trent Cotchin (AF $606k SC $469k MID) with his hamstring problem.

The Richmond coach said: “Trent had a good session today. But with his history we won’t play him versus GWS.”

North Melbourne had a few issues, the main one for AFL Fantasy and SuperCoach coaches was Jy Simpkin (AF $686k SC $555k MID/FWD) who hurt his ankle but played out the game.

Kangaroos coach Rhyce Shaw said: “Jhye Simpkin rolled his ankle but fought on which was really pleasing.”

Kyron Hayden (AF $253k SC $228k MID) suffered a concussion in the third quarter. Shaw said: “Kyron was knocked out. I haven’t spoken to the medical team so I don’t know too much… He was ruled out pretty quickly.”

Jack Ziebell (AF $552k SC $414k MID/FWD) sustained an early hamstring injury upon his return. Shaw said: “I haven’t had much time to speak to our medical team yet but it’s a hamstring injury. He was pretty much right to go last week but we took the cautious route and it’s ended up like this. It’s a bit of bad luck for Jack.”

Cam Zurhaar (AF $465k SC $347k FWD) was a late withdrawal with a calf issue but Shaw said it “doesn’t look too bad with Cam”, stating they’d been cautious with him.

Sydney v Gold Coast Suns
Swans debutant Elijah Taylor (AF $200k SC $117k FWD) spent time off the field with an ankle issue but Sydney coach John Longmire said he was OK.

Longmire said: “I think he’s OK. His ankle was a bit sore for a while. He had it re-strapped & he played out the rest of the game. Hopefully he’s OK.”

The Swans coach indicated Sam Reid (AF $514k SC $426k FWD) would hopefully be available next round and said Colin O’Riordan (AF $346k SC $266k DEF) picked up a hip injury.

GWS Giants v Brisbane Lions
No new injuries but GWS coach Leon Cameron provided an update on Toby Greene (AF $656k SC $471k FWD) who was a late withdrawal due to knee soreness.

Cameron said: “Hopefully (he’ll play Round 8). It’s too early to probably tell. He was a little bit sore on Friday, that’s why we pulled him out late… I’d expect to have him back.”

Essendon v Western Bulldogs
The only issue to report was a minor problem to Marcus Bontempelli (AF $664k SC $570k MID) but Dogs coach Luke Beveridge said he was OK. “Marcus did have a slight roll of the ankle but he was fine,” Beveridge said.

Geelong v Collingwood
Collingwood forward Jordan De Goey (AF $560k SC $413k FWD) dominated the game with five goals but he picked up a finger injury which may see him miss a few weeks. The Pies confirmed he needs surgery but have not yet mentioned a timeline on his return.

Collingwood GM of Football Geoff Walsh said: “Jordan has torn the flexor tendon in his right middle finger and it was determined this morning that surgery will be required to repair the damage.

“Jordan will have surgery over the weekend and will remain with the team while he recovers. We will have a better idea of an expected return date following his surgery.”

Cats skipper Joel Selwood (AF $668k SC $537k MID) was iced up early with a hamstring injury which looks set to sideline him for a few weeks.

Geelong coach Chris Scott said: “Speaking to him and the medical staff briefly they’re optimistic it’s not too bad but it always takes a bit of time to make that assessment. There was no suggestion that we would think about putting him back on the ground so that says a little bit.”

Returning Cat Jordan Clark (AF $468k SC $330k MID) suffered a shoulder dislocation. Scott said: “Jordan Clark had a shoulder dislocation so that’s not a great sign, but the variation between the minor shoulder dislocation and the severe one is great so we’re hoping it’s on the minor end. I’m not really sure yet, some others might have better clarity.”
