The Melbourne Renegades have bolstered their squad with the signing of Pakistani-American spinning all-rounder Hassan Khan as an Overseas Replacement Player for BBL|14.
Khan is known for his left-arm spin and power-hitting abilities, bringing versatility and energy to the Renegades’ line-up.
He’ll likely cover for Jacob Bethell for the Renegades’ first two games while he’s unavailable on England Test duty in New Zealand.
Bethell as well as Laurie Evans will also depart the BBL in early January, around Round 6 or 7, for commitments in the SA-20 and ILT20 respectively, bringing Hassan into play then too. The ‘Gades other import, Tim Seifert, is fully available throughout BBL|14. View our full availability calendar for a round-by-round breakdown.
Khan, 25, made a name for himself for his home country of Pakistan, captaining the side in the 2018 U/19 World Cup, before going on to play in T20 leagues all around the world showcasing his skills as both a wicket-taker and a reliable finisher with the bat.
He is uncapped internationally having been billed as the next big thing in Pakistan in his youth. But he’s barely played domestically in Pakistan over the past few years, last playing in the PSL in 2021-22.
Instead, he’s spent much of the past few years in North America where he’s developed as an all-rounder, playing 2 games in the Caribbean Premier League this year and 9 in the USA’s Major League Cricket.
Most recently, Khan made a big impact for San Francisco Unicorns in Major League Cricket – alongside Finn Allen, Josh Inglis, Matthew Short and Pat Cummins – taking 10 wickets and scoring 204 runs at a 143.7 strike rate across his nine games, winning best domestic player of the MLC for his efforts.
Renegades general manager James Rosengarten said: “Hassan is an exciting young talent who gives us options in both departments. His ability to contribute in those important middle overs with the ball and add valuable runs down the order will be crucial as we push for success this season.”
Khan expressed his excitement about joining the Renegades and playing in one of the premier T20 leagues in the world. He said: “The Big Bash is one of the best competitions in the world, and I’m thrilled to be part of the Renegades. I’m looking forward to contributing and playing whatever role coach Cameron White requires of me.”
Khan’s signing takes the Renegades squad to 16 players, with two more signings to be announced shortly ahead of the club’s first game of BBL|14 on December 16 in Sydney.
The signing of Khan theoretically could see him bat at 7, allowing Will Sutherland to play as a bat-only at 6. Sutherland is currently recovering from a side strain.
