The second week of the bye rounds are here. There isn’t much point in me dividing people into VC and C options this week, as your bye players do not lock until the final game of the round has begun.
Follow me on Twitter @Pig_Mentality for more SuperCoach VC/C chat.
This means you can loop right up until Monday at 3.20pm. Therefore, I discuss the top options this week and rank them.
Captains and Vice Captains
1. Rowan Marshall
Rowan has just had a nice, restful week off and he now presents us with my favourite VC option of the round. Coming up against Sydney, who give up the fourth most points to opposition ruckmen, in large part due to Ladhams, Hickey and McLean only winning the hit-outs 34.7% of the time (the worst % in the competition). Marshall averages 117 points per game at the SCG, including 156 in his game there last year. The easiest VC hit this week.
2. Tim English
Tim was back to his best against the Cats, who are quite restrictive to opposition ruckmen. Despite this, English scored a 156. He now plays at the same venue against Port Adelaide, who allow the most points per game to opposition ruckmen. The Power only win the Hit Out in 37.7% of their ruck contests, which will leave plenty of points available for Timmy, to add to his mark and disposal points under the roof. 139 against Port in Round 5 of this year. VC or C option.
3. Jordan Dawson
Jordan is averaging 99 points per game away from Adelaide Oval and 130 at home. This week he plays at Adelaide Oval, which in itself is enough to recommend as a Captain option. Couple that with the fact that he plays against West Coast, who give up the most points per game to opposition midfielders, and this is shaping up to be a blood bath. His previous three games against the Eagles are a 106 average, but I expect that to be smashed this week. VC or C option.
4. Caleb Serong
Caleb’s last three games have been 120, 135 and 93. The 93 was on track for another 120 before he had a 0% disposal efficiency last quarter. This week he plays Richmond at Optus Stadium, who give up the third most points to opposition midfielders. The flag is that Richmond has been using Marlion Pickett as a tagger recently, and he could go to Serong. VC preferred.
5. Rory Laird
Rory comes into this game with a 3-game average of 134 against the Eagles. He only registered 5 tackles last week, after averaging 13 tackles per game in the previous fortnight. It is possible that the suspension issue for his dangerous tackle in Round 11 has made him more cautious. However, playing at home, on a Saturday afternoon, against West Coast, should see Laird back to his best. VC or C option.
6. James Sicily
James has a three round average of 147, highlighted by his 172 in his last game before suspension. This week he plays Brisbane at the MCG. The Lions give up the fifth-most points per game to opposition defenders, including; Josh Worrell (100), Wayne Milera (92), Rory Atkins (102), Charlie Ballard (95) and Mason Redman (146) all easily outperforming their season average in their Brisbane matchup recently. Plus Sicily scored a 134 in his last visit to the MCG. VC or C option.
7. Nick Daicos
Nick has gone between 123 and 125 in three of his last four games. That consistency matches up with his previous game against Melbourne; 129. The Demons generally do not tag opponents, and I am expecting Daicos to show out on the big King’s Birthday stage. He has struggled to get above a 130 score in the past six weeks, but the last time he did was on another big stage; Anzac Day (145). A safe fallback Captain option.
8. Josh Dunkley
Josh is the third highest averaging player this season and has a three round average of 134. This week he plays Hawthorn, who are an easy team for midfielders to score against. His last score against the Hawks was a 127. The only flag here is that Dunkley has an average of 97 at the MCG from 8 games played (with a highest score of 117). Because of that he is a VC only option.
POD VC/C?
1. Jake Lloyd
Jake has had a great year, without quite cracking the top 6 defenders. Owned by 8% of teams, he has earned the nickname “The Seagull” in previous years due to his ability to inhale cheap chips in the defensive 50. I expect another seagull-like performance this week against St Kilda. The Saints give up the most points to opposition defenders this year, due to their zone defence. Lloyd will be the main beneficiary this week. VC preferred.
2. Bailey Dale
Bailey stepped up after the hamstring injury to Ed Richards last week, taking 86% of the Bulldogs’ kick-ins (up 36% from the previous week). Owned by only 2% of the competition, he now faces the team that has scored the most behinds in the AFL this year. If Port Adelaide continues to kick inaccurately, Dale could also start cawing like a seagull, he should have a field day in the backline. VC preferred.
My moves
I scored 1,880 last week which had me hovering inside the top 1k, at rank 657th for the season.
Last week I chose Daicos as Vice-Captain (123) into a Bontempelli Captain (113). I took Daicos’ score as Captain.
This week I will have the Vice-Captain on Marshall followed by English as my Captain.
