Essendon v North Melbourne

Jye Caldwell (AF $644k SC $447k MID) was subbed out with a tight calf in the third quarter. Dylan Shiel (AF $733k SC $516k MID) was a late out, while North withdrew Lachie Young (AF $502k SC $361k D/M) and Jack Mahony (AF $295k SC $172k FWD) late due to health and safety protocols.

North caretaker coach Leigh Adams said Jack Ziebell (AF $497k SC $328k D/F) had some bone bruising on his elbow, while Jackson Archer (AF $208k SC $117k DEF) copped a hip stinger.

Dons coach Ben Rutten hailed Mason Redman (AF $771k SC $553k DEF) after fighting from internal bruising last week. He said: “I thought Redman’s 120-minute performance was pretty impressive for us… He ended up in hospital (last week), so to come out and perform like he did was really pleasing.”

Richmond v Brisbane Lions

Dylan Grimes (AF $396k SC $337k DEF) tweaked his hamstring and was subbed out, with Tigers coach Damien Hardwick saying it looked “not great”.

Hardwick praised rookie Noah Cumberland (AF $331k SC $196k M/F) when he said: “That first goal I thought it was Leigh Matthews bursting through the pack… He came in a bit raw, he’s put the work in, he’s self-driven and he’s reaping the benefits. He’s only going to get better.”

Brisbane lost Zac Bailey (AF $517k SC $345k M/F) to a sternum problem and was taken to hospital. Brandon Starcevich (AF $601k SC $374k DEF) was a late out due to quad awareness. Lions coach Chris Fagan said Keidean Coleman (AF $657k SC $468k D/F) kept cramping up late and Jarrod Berry (AF $697k SC $430k MID) rolled his ankle.

Gold Coast v West Coast

Gold Coast didn’t use their sub, while West Coast lost youngster Jai Culley (AF $289k SC $102k M/F) to a hamstring injury. Eagles coach Adam Simpson said: “He felt the hamstring. (The severity) depends but we don’t know. Sometimes they’re long term, sometimes they’re all good to go.”

Brandon Ellis (AF $679k SC $482k D/M) was a late withdrawal but Suns coach Stuart Dew said he’s likely next week.

Adelaide v Carlton

The Crows didn’t use their sub, while Carlton had a raft of problems with a shoulder injury to Corey Durdin (AF $347k SC $245k FWD) forcing him to be subbed out. Nic Newman (AF $676k SC $452k DEF) didn’t return in the third term after a nasty gash to his knee and Matthew Kennedy (AF $759k SC $519k MID) was concussed late, with Blues coach Michael Voss saying they will all be assessed through the week.

Geelong v Western Bulldogs

Gary Rohan was subbed out due to a head knock while the Dogs didn’t use their sub but Marcus Bontempelli (AF $868k SC $652k M/F) seemed to labour at times. On Bontempelli, Dogs coach Luke Beveridge said: “He got a bad quad cork. In that last quarter he spent most of it forward.”

Beveridge provided an update on Adam Treloar (AF $787k SC $498k M/F) who missed this game due to a calf issue. He said: “We thought he might have been a chance. He’s had this ongoing calf niggle for a few weeks. It got a bit too much so he had to come out of the game last week. He thought he’d be OK but at our main session this week he wasn’t able to get through. It wouldn’t surprise me if he misses another one.”

St Kilda v Hawthorn

Josh Morris (AF $207k SC $130k FWD) was subbed out at half-time with a shoulder injury while Mitch Lewis (AF $509k SC $399k FWD) was benched with a knee knock. Jacob Koschitzke (AF $421k SC $279k FWD) also seemed to cop a corked quad.

Tom Campbell (AF $453k SC $312k RUC) was a late out, freeing up Rowan Marshall (AF $759k SC $451k R/F) in the ruck, with rookie Mitch Owens (AF $281k SC $139k MID) coming in and impressing.

On the Campbell decision, Saints coach Brett Ratten said: “We probably wanted to keep the Hawks guessing a bit and the VFL had a bye… We don’t usually do anything like that.”

On Marshall, Ratten said: “He’s always looking for that number one spot. It just happens because Paddy (Ryder) is not playing… It’s good for Ro (being sole ruck), he gets some confidence out of that.”

Sydney v GWS Giants

Neither side used their sub. Braydon Preuss (AF $650k SC $427k RUC) may come under MRO scrutiny for an off-the-ball bump on James Rowbottom, who was floored briefly but played on. The AFL match review on Sunday charged Preuss with Rough Conduct, offering him a $2,000 fine but not a suspension.

Stephen Coniglio (AF $865k SC $553k M/F) was a shock late out for GWS due to soreness.

GWS caretaker coach Mark McVeigh explained: “He really battled to get up for last week. He did an amazing job to do that. We tried to ease him off this week. The soreness got him, we erred on the side of caution. I didn’t want to risk him today as we brought in a lot of midfielders, so we thought we could potentially cover him today, but he would’ve been at high risk to be injured.

“I think he’ll be right to go next week. He needs a couple more days and hopefully he’s alright.”

Collingwood v Port Adelaide

Taylor Adams (AF $682k SC $413k MID) was subbed out at half-time with a groin injury while Jeremy Howe (AF $482k SC $411k DEF) was iced up late with a quad issue. Josh Carmichael (AF $324k SC $139k M/F) came on for Adams as medi sub.

Pies coach Craig McRae said Adams would need scans, while he said Howe copped a knee to the backside but said “he’ll be fine”.

Brodie Grundy (AF $802k SC $544k RUC) is closing in on an AFL return, having played in the VFL on Saturday following a knee injury. McRae said: “He took a big step forward today. We thought he needed the run. He played up until the last quarter in the VFL… We’re trying to set him up, whether that’s 6 days’ time, we’ll see how he pulls up.”

Travis Boak (AF $749k SC $510k MID) had a worry with his hand or finger, but Port coach Ken Hinkley wasn’t sure of any major injury. He said: “I don’t know now. There’s a chance that he may or may not have. It’ll either be badly bruised or it could be a small fracture in his hand but he did play out the whole game. Hopefully he’ll be OK.”

Fremantle v Melbourne

Luke Jackson (AF $598k SC $417k F/R) passed a concussion test late. Dees coach Simon Goodwin said: “He just had a little knock late in the game. He got checked by the docs and he’s all clear. There’s nothing wrong with him. He’ll be ready to go next week.”

Angus Brayshaw (AF $776k SC $507k D/M) played more of a midfield role. Goodwin said: “I thought Angus was outstanding tonight. We might see a little bit more of Angus through the middle over three next few weeks.”

Freo had no injury concerns.
