UPDATES

Braydon Preuss (AF $657k SC $444k RUC) has missed out on selection for GWS despite a strong showing in the VFL last weekend which seemed on the cards from Giants caretaker coach Mark McVeigh’s press conference this morning. He said: “We’ll discuss that. We were really happy with Matty Flynn, we thought he did a terrific job supported by Tom Green.

“This week if you look at Port Adelaide, they have makeshift rucks at the moment… We were pleased to see Preussy get through a full game. That was part of the reason we haven’t been able to play him, the lack of continuity.”

James Peatling (AF $498k SC $361k DEF) has missed a few games with a hamstring issue but will return. McVeigh said: “James will play this week. We won’t muck around with that one. He kicked 9 goals in 3 games and probably could’ve played last week. We need small forwards.”

Brodie Grundy (AF $802k SC $544k RUCK) is closing in on a return for the Magpies which may impact Darcy Cameron’s role. Pies coach Craig McRae said: “He’ll progress to full training next week and see where it takes us. I don’t know a timeframe around that.”

Jordan De Goey (AF $617k SC $416k M/F) is in some doubt after leaving training early with a quad issue but has been named in the 22. McRae said: “He was just a little bit tight in the quad. We’ll have to assess that and see where it goes.”

Josh Carmichael (AF $190k SC $102k M/F) is one who may come in to debut, named as one of four emergeccies. McRae said: “Josh Carmichael is playing some good footy. There’s a lot of players below putting their names, it’s just whether opportunities present for them.”

McRae confirmed the Magpies will be without key defenders Darcy Moore and Jack Madgen due to injuries, possibly opening the door for Will Kelly (AF $191k SC $123k D/F) who is also an emergency. He said: “He’s one that’s been playing those key position roles. We’ll discuss that and see where it gets to.”

Eagles coach Adam Simpson offered some reassurance for Rhett Bazzo’s (AF $264k SC $133k D/F) job security along with Brady Hough (AF $425k SC $252k MID). He said: “He’s learnt so much Baz, we would love to continue to play him and Hoff.”

Simpson spoke about Greg Clark (AF $456k SC $255k MID) who has been out of the senior side lately but named in the 26-man squad. He said: “He was really good the week before (in the WAFL). He’s in the mix with Trew, O’Neill, Jai (Culley), those young midfielders coming through.”

On Zane Trew (AF $205k SC $123k MID), who debuted last week, Simpson said: “We played young Zane Trew last week, we were happy with, in particular, his third quarter. Giving all these guys opportunities is our goal before the end of the year.”

On Mid-Season Draft pick one Jai Culley (AF $190k SC $102k MID) playing this season, Simpson added: “If his form warrants it. We’re not too concerned about playing these kids if their form stacks up, we’ll give them an opportunity to play for sure.”

Early season fave Tristan Xerri (AF $509k SC $325k F/R) has been ruled out for the season by North Melbourne after undergoing shoulder surgery.
