Round 14 Injury Recap: Preuss hurt & suspended, Jeffrey worry, Teakle surgery, Butters suspected MCL

Stay up to date throughout the round with our rolling injury report from the coaches post-game. With the six-game round extending from Thursday night through until Sunday, these snippets of info will be key.

Gold Coast v Adelaide

The Suns lost Wil Powell (AF $496k SC $389k DEF) to a “nasty” ankle/leg injury, which coach Stuart Dew said was a possible fracture. He was hospitalized.

Connor Budarick (AF $502k SC $292k DEF) had a hamstring issue, while Joel Jeffrey (AF $368k SC $251k FWD) went off late but Dew said: “I think Joel is OK.”

Adelaide lost Riley Thilthorpe (AF $410k SC $289k FWD) after rolling his ankle.

GWS Giants v Western Bulldogs

Braydon Preuss (AF $683k SC $457k RUCK) was subbed out early with an ankle injury. GWS caretaker coach Mark McVeigh said: “I thought Braydon was really good until he got injured. It’s just an ankle. They assessed it. Tried to work on it as much as they could. Wasn’t able to come back on. He really tried to come back on, we had to sub him unfortunately. That’s a big blow for him. We don’t know where it’ll land yet but you’d have to think he’s in doubt. If he’s in doubt, it might be one week. Who knows? Let’s hope it’s on the lesser end.”

Preuss also has been offered a one-game ban for Rough Conduct (Dangerous Tackle) against Tim English.

Debutant Ryan Angwin (AF $190k SC $123k D/M) had an ankle injury too. McVeigh said: “We had young Angwin badly hampered by an ankle… He could hardly run. Disappointed for him. I think he’s probably the lesser of the three. I think he’ll be OK.”

James Peatling (AF $503k SC $371k DEF) battled a hamstring issue. McVeigh said: “Just tight. He suggested during the game he lacked a bit of power so we were reluctant to keep pushing it. Fingers crossed we got that at the right time. We’ll scan it.” Matt Flynn (AF $559k SC $455k RUCk) was a late out due to a quad issue.

Taylor Duryea (AF $521k SC $320k DEF) went off with suspected MCL injury which Dogs coach Luke Beveridge was worse than a grade one type strain which will likely sideline him for a while. He also said Cody Weightman (AF $421k SC $301k FWD) dislocated his elbow and will need scans.

West Coast v Geelong

Rhett Bazzo (AF $218k SC $117k DEF) made his debut and Eagles coach Adam Simpson said: “I thought he stood up. He was on Cameron in the second half in his first game. Blooding those young kids, Hough is important for us, and Bazzo, they’ve got to fill out. They’re up for the fight.”

Tim Kelly (AF $736k SC $495k MID) was a late out for West Coast due to illness, while Jeremy McGovern (AF $601k SC $462k DEF) was subbed out with fractured ribs.

Geelong coach Chris Scott confirmed Patrick Dangerfield (AF $619k SC $435k MID) will return next round. He said: “Yep (he’ll come back). The issue was making sure we managed him in a way that’s congruent with the overall plan.”

Port Adelaide v Sydney

Zak Butters (AF $641k SC $482k M/F) was subbed out of the game with a left knee injury, suspected to be an MCL. Port coach Ken Hinkley said: “We all understand how good Zak can be, he’s a pretty important player but he’ll miss some time, probably no doubt, with his knee. It looks like a medial. But we’ll tell you exactly what happens once we get the information.”

Brynn Teakle (AF $190k SC $102k R/F) left the game in the second quarter, with Hinkley confirming it was a broken collarbone, having been seen in a sling. Port have since confirmed Teakle has undergone surgery and will miss six to eight weeks.

St Kilda v Essendon

Neither sub was used. Darcy Parish (AF $869k SC $607k MID) is likely back next week. Dons coach Ben Rutten said: “It’s just a corkie. It’s just a severe one, he played a fair bit of the game afterwards but we’ll expect him back (next week).”

Rutten praised debutant Massimo D’Ambrosio (AF $190k SC $102k DEF). He said: “I thought he was great, he’s only been at the club for two weeks. He’s got a contagious smile. Everything is new for him and he’s up for any challenge – he’s a real injection of energy.”

The Saints will likely welcome back Jack Steele (AF $892k SC $590k MID) next week too. Saints coach Brett Ratten said: “He’ll be back next week. He could’ve played this week but he would’ve broken all the records. We were like ‘just hold your horses mate’.”

Richmond v Carlton

Sam Durdin (AF $195k SC $123k DEF) went off late with a knee injury which the Blues have since confirmed is a medial ligament injury. The club update said: “Expected to be sidelined for the next month with a medial ligament injury… Underwent scans on Friday morning which confirmed the injury, which at this stage will likely rule him out until approximately Round 19.”

Jack Martin (AF $433k SC $307k FWD) was subbed out with a calf tightness which means he’ll be a test for next week.
