Collingwood v Melbourne

Max Gawn (AF $845k SC $587k RUCK) spent some time off the ground with injury issues. Dees coach Simon Goodwin said: “He’s sore. The four days off have come at a good time for Max. He’s got a pretty sore back and ankle and a few knocks but he’ll be right. He’ll bounce back.”

Debutant Daniel Turner (AF $193k SC $123k DEF) copped a heavy head knock. Goodwin said: “Daniel obviously failed the concussion test. He’ll be out next week.”

Harrison Petty (AF $332k SC $278k DEF) also had a head knock but Goodwin confirmed he cleared his protocols.

Pies coach Craig McRae praised Nick Daicos (AF $640k SC $373k D/M) for his impact. He said: “We’re not surprised by how he’s playing… We moved him back to look after him. We’ve been trying to maybe play him sub for the last few weeks to give him a break but he’s just playing too well.

“We see him being an inside sub futuristically. At the moment putting him against Selwoods and Petraccas it’s not going to be favourable for him. We want to give him more exposure. The plan was to shift him forward second half of the year but it’s going to be hard to do that now.”

North Melbourne v GWS Giants

Josh Kelly (AF $908k SC $619k MID) had a late injury scare but GWS caretaker coach Mark McVeigh explained: “He’s all good. He cramped a little bit late, with about five minutes to go. Probably with the six-day break coming up we took the opportunity to take him off and keep him off.

“He came off because he cramped. He was getting a massage before he went back out. We noticed it and thought we’d just take the safety route there.”

McVeigh praised Stephen Coniglio (AF $704k SC $431k M/F) after another strong game in the midfield. He said: “Positional change has helped him too. Deep down he felt like he could play in the midfield… For me, I’d like to see our best players in their best positions. I thoroughly believe Cogs is a midfielder.”

Harry Perryman (AF $746k SC $504k D/M) was subbed out with a worrying rib issue where he was taken to hospital and which McVeigh said would likely see him out for some time.

Braydon Preuss (AF $683k SC $457k RUCK) appears to be firmly in the frame for a recall. McVeigh said: “He had a really interrupted 3-4 weeks. He was quite ill going into the break. He took a long time to get over that. Everyone has been unfortunately touched by this flu. It really affected him.

“He needed to play a game and get some training. He trained 3-4 really good sessions leading into the VFL today and he played really well today. We’re really happy with that. He’s got through. He’ll be in consideration next week. Really pleased he went back, applied his trade and did the right thing.”

Jason Horne-Francis (AF $503k SC $311k M/F) was offered a two-game ban by the AFL Match Review officer. The update said: “Has been charged with Striking Josh Kelly… In summary, the player can accept a two-match suspension with an early plea.”

Brisbane Lions v St Kilda

Dayne Zorko (AF $715k SC $464k D/M) was subbed out of the game with a hamstring injury. Lions coach Chris Fagan said: “I only (know) that Zorks has got a sore hamstring and we’ll find out a bit more about that.”

The Lions put out an update on Monday that said: “Scans revealed on Monday a minor hamstring strain… Zorko will be assessed throughout the next two weeks for the Lions top-of-the-table clash with Melbourne next Thursday.”

Darcy Gardiner (AF $397k SC $305k DEF) also had a rib/back issue.

Mitch Owens (AF $266k SC $117k MID) and Daniel McKenzie (AF $558k SC $392k MID) both went off due to concussions. Zak Jones (AF $678k SC $435k MID) suffered a hamstring injury which will “see him miss a bit of time” according to Saints coach Brett Ratten.

Fremantle v Hawthorn

Nat Fyfe (AF $709k SC $546k MID) returned from injury for the first time this season. Longmuir said: “We’re aiming for about 50-50 (midfield/forward split). We’ll keep exploring different ways we can improve that. I thought he was a little bit rusty.”

There’s been talk Fyfe’s return will impact the role of Will Brodie (AF $758k SC $573k M/F) who had a quiet first half. Longmuir said: “I don’t think Will’s role changed much; he just had a game where he didn’t impact as much as he has.”

Blake Acres (AF $702k SC $445k MID) was subbed out in the last quarter with a hamstring injury. Fremantle coach Justin Longmuir said: “Just talking to him in the rooms and we haven’t had an update from the docs but he doesn’t think it’s overly serious. He’s disappointed, as all players are when they get injured but fingers crossed it’s not on the too-high of the serious scale.”

Sam Frost (AF $420k SC $309k DEF) was subbed out for Hawthorn with a knee issue.

Essendon v Carlton

Darcy Parish (AF $908k SC $625k MID) was subbed out. Essendon coach Ben Rutten said: “He’s pretty good. He had a pretty significant corkie pretty early in the game and he’s battled through it for a while. We got him to spend time forward. In the end it got too much for him.

“It’s too early to tell. We’ll just have to see how it settles. Corkies will be pretty sore for 2-3 days, then we’ll start to get it moving and get a better idea as the week goes on.”

Carlton subbed out Adam Cerra (AF $728k SC $478k MID) early in the game. Blues coach Michael Voss said: “Hamstring tightness. Until he gets scans, we’ll wait and see what it looks like. We’re hoping it’s minor. I would’ve thought (unlikely for next round) but I’d be guessing.”

Caleb Marchbank (AF $294k SC $209k DEF) returned for his first game in years although he didn’t get huge fantasy numbers. Voss said: “Getting a month of footy under his belt. We need to be realistic here. if he’s winning his battle and joining in as a teammate, I’m sure his performances will only climb from here.”

Sam Durdin (AF $195k SC $123k DEF) looms as a key defensive contender. Voss said: “Durdin will be playing VFL on the weekend, more to get a look at him really than anything else. It’s a genuine option for us.”

Richmond v Port Adelaide

Judson Clarke (AF $232k SC $117k M/F) impressed on his Tigers debut, with two goals with his first two kicks. Richmond coach Damien Hardwick said: “He gets in spots that are really dangerous. Everything he does is really clean. He’s going to get better. The conditions probably didn’t favour his skill level tonight. He’s like another Kane Lambert.”

Port subbed out Trent Dumont (AF $552k SC $371k MID) with a strained calf, while Power coach Ken Hinkley spoke about Brynn Teakle (AF $190k SC $102k F/R) is a potential ruck option soon.

He said: “We’ll see him play (in SANFL) this week… He’s (been) playing at the level below in the WAFL. He played very well at that level. We’ve drafted him with an eye for now and the future.”

Zak Butters (AF $643k SC $463k M/F) was involved in a head clash with Tom Jonas although both were cleared of concussion. Port provided an update: “Scans have shown Butters has a small hairline crack in the cheek bone, but he has been cleared by a specialist to be available to face the Swans at Adelaide Oval on Saturday week.”
