R9 Injury Recap: Steele to undergo surgery, English to miss again, Simpkin & Pendlebury late outs

Stay up to date throughout the round with our rolling injury report from the coaches post-game. With the nine-game round extending from Friday night through until Sunday, these snippets of info will be key.

West Coast v Melbourne

Liam Ryan (AF $418k SC $232k FWD) was subbed off with a hamstring injury, although he’ll likely come under MRO scrutiny for a high bump on Jake Bowey. Luke Foley (AF $493k SC $283k DEF) was concussed late after a driving tackle.

West Coast coach Adam Simpson was hopeful he’d get a few players back. He said: “Gaffy is half a chance. It was a slight quad issue last week, he trained on Saturday OK. Luke Shuey will be available. Not sure about Yeoy.”

James Harmes (AF $638k SC $438k M/F) was subbed out due to hamstring tightness.

GWS Giants v Carlton

Zac Williams (AF $679k SC $465k DEF) was subbed off with fears of a serious Achilles injury. Carlton coach Michael Voss said: “The initial progress is we don’t know. We’ll get that assessment tomorrow and see what the damage is from there. It’s a little bit too early to call exactly what it is.”

Stephen Coniglio (AF $684k SC $429k M/F) had a back knock and struggled. Conor Stone (AF $260k SC $181k M/F) was subbed out with a left hamstring injury. GWS coach Leon Cameron said he was a “bit tight in the hamstring”.

Gold Coast v Fremantle

Alex Pearce (AF $336k SC $272k DEF) was subbed out with an ankle injury.

Adelaide v Brisbane Lions

Neither side used their sub.

Sydney v Essendon

Jye Caldwell (AF $588k SC $386k MID) was subbed out with a shoulder injury. Dons coach Ben Rutten said: “Unfortunately he’s got a bit of an AC (shoulder). He’s pretty sore at the moment. I don’t know the extent of the damage, we’ll find out about that in the early part of the week.”

Callum Mills (AF $928k SC $686k MID) was brilliant with 156/167 (AF/SC), including 13 tackles and 29 disposals. Sydney coach John Longmire said: “When a leader sets himself on being the highest pressure player and goes on the hunt it sets a good tone for the team. I thought that’s as good as I’ve seen him scramble and put pressure on around the ball.”

St Kilda v Geelong

Jack Higgins (AF $590k SC $402k FWD) was concussed and subbed out for St Kilda. Jack Steele (AF $929k SC $637k MID) picked up a shoulder issue but played on, although he appeared hampered throughout.

St Kilda coach Brett Ratten said: “I’m not sure where that AC will be next week… (We won’t know) Until Monday. We’ll get some scans and look at that. We’ll make a decision.”

But the Saints have since confirmed he’ll undergo surgery after rupturing his right AC joint and will likely miss 6-8 weeks. St Kilda Head of Football David Rath said: “It’s really disappointing to have Jack out for an extended period of time, but it’s important for him to get the treatment he needs to set him up for the second half of the season. He’s a warrior and would continue to play if required, but we need to do what’s right for Jack long-term.

North Melbourne v Port Adelaide

Neither sub used their sub but Jy Simpkin (AF $738k SC $473k MID) was a late withdrawal due to a hamstring injury.

North coach David Noble said: “It’s only been 24 hours. It was only a small bit of soreness yesterday. I don’t know if we’ll scan it. I think they’ll clinically assess it tomorrow and find out from there. I don’t know if you can have a one-week hamstring. I’m not even sure if it’s a hamstring. It could be more back related.”

Hawthorn v Richmond

Jack Gunston (AF $468k SC $363k FWD) hurt his ankle and was subbed. Hawks coach Sam Mitchell admitted others were “banged up” but played out the game, so he was hopeful they’d be fine.

Noah Balta (AF $452k SC $323k D/F) was subbed out with a right hamstring injury, which means debutant Bigoa Nyuon (AF $190k SC $123k DEF) looks set to hold his spot.

Richmond coach Damien Hardwick said: “His athleticism is evident. He’s only going to get better. You can play 50 games at VFL level but you play one at AFL level, you’ll learn a lot more. He’ll play with Noah going out next week. He’ll continue to grow and learn.”

Collingwood v Western Bulldogs

Jack Madgen (AF $402k SC $315k DEF) was subbed out with a shoulder sub-luxation. Scott Pendlebury (AF $714k SC $544k D/M) was a late out due to illness but Pies coach Craig McRae said: “He’ll likely be back (next week).” He also indicated Jack Ginnivan (AF $471k SC $333k FWD) would be available in Round 10 while Jamie Elliott (AF $628k SC $435k FWD) was a “maybe.”

Dogs coach Luke Beveridge revealed how unwell Tim English (AF $837k SC $572k R/F) is and that he’ll miss again in Round 10. He said: “I don’t think Tim will come back this week. I mentioned he’d been really ill and I mean really ill and so I don’t think he’ll be ready to play next week so ‘Sweety’ is likely to continue on.

“(English) just has a really, really bad bout of this flu. It’s just really knocked him around. Nothing sinister, we think he’ll be OK, but he’s probably dropped a little bit of weight and it will take a while to get his bearings again.”

Adam Treloar (AF $744k SC $483k M/F) earned praise with Beveridge revealing he was unwell in the lead-up to the game. He said: “Off the (Port) Adelaide game, crook as a dog, we didn’t see him until Wednesday. He turned the corner Tuesday. The way he played after duress was a testament to his intestinal fortitude.”
