Melbourne v St Kilda

Max Gawn (AF $944k SC $669k RUCK) didn’t have his usual impact. Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin said: “He’s just had a couple of knocks. He should hopefully be right once he gets through the first 48 hours.” Goodwin also said Jake Lever (AF $419k SC $412k DEF) had a corkie.

Dan Butler (AF $418k SC $256k FWD) went off with an Achilles issue which may require a spell on the sidelines according to St Kilda coach Brett Ratten. He also flagged Jack Billings (AF $699k SC $451k MID) and Jarryn Geary (AF $376k SC $241k MID) as being in contention after good VFL games.

Essendon coach Ben Rutten praised rookie Ben Hobbs (AF $331k SC $163k MID). He said: “Hobbsy is going to be a fantastic player for us. He’s going to continue to grow into that midfield role. We’re trying to give him as much exposure as we can there, setting him up to succeed.”

Jordan Ridley (AF $623k SC $480k DEF) was among Essendon’s five late withdrawals due to illness.

Hawthorn coach Sam Mitchell said Chad Wingard (AF $540k SC $390k M/F) was “too sick to play” while he flagged Mitch Lewis (AF $572k SC $352k FWD) was “likely” to return next week.

Scott was optimistic late out Rhys Stanley (AF $623k SC $453k RUCK) will play next week after an ankle issue, while he confirmed Jed Bews (AF $352k SC $238k DEF) had entered concussion protocols.

Sydney v Gold Coast

Patrick McCartin (AF $349k SC $268k D/F) impressed in defence, winning praise from Sydney coach John Longmire. He said: “He’s been going well. He’s developing well, it’s his first season as a defender. He’s learning all the time. He’s going OK.”

Luke Parker (AF $760k SC $518k M/F) may be one to monitor. Longmire said: “I think Pete (Ladhams) and Parksy rolled their ankles, but I think they’re OK.”

Jack Lukosius (AF $582k SC $384k D/M) was subbed out with a knee issue. Suns coach Stuart Dew said: “He had that injury a couple of weeks ago and he tweaked that. He got through last week, so fingers crossed it’s a tweak and we can just let it settle. It’s a wait-and-see.”

Richmond v Collingwood

Dustin Martin (AF $676k SC $503k M/F) returned and Richmond coach Damien Hardwick praised him. He said: “He got through. He’ll get better again next week. That’s exciting for us.”

Hardwick elaborated on how Martin was used, when he said: “We tried to get him one rotation a quarter and a longer break. Positionally wise, it was mainly forward and then he was allowed to do as he pleases as long as it impacts the team positively.”

Maurice Rioli (AF $226k SC $123k M/F) did well in his second game of the season. Hardwick said: “Two of those chase-down tackles we haven’t seen since Daniel (Rioli) was there. He’s really really growing. A guy that we drafted 2-3 years ago. He’s improved every single year. He’s growing into that role.”

Hardwick also mentioned Nick Vlastuin (AF $729k SC $503k DEF), stating: “Both (Vlastuin and Prestia) missed with illness. They both tried to go on Sunday, but weren’t that well. they’ll be automatic next week.”

Pies coach Craig McRae spoke about Aiden Begg (AF $218k SC $123k RUCK) who battled in the ruck. McRae said: “Young Begg is a competitor. We love that in him. But he’s got to learn a lot from his second game.”

Fremantle v North Melbourne

Debutant Jye Amiss (AF $276k SC $175k FWD) won praise from Freo coach Justin Longmuir. He said: “Really good, he gave us everything we wanted. Engaged his opponent, and as he gets bigger and stronger and fitter, he’ll provide more options.”

Longmuir was confident Luke Ryan (AF $666k SC $483k DEF) who had an ankle issue but played on. He said: “He just rolled his ankle. A pretty standard ankle and he got through the game well. It’s a nine-day break, so we expect him to come up.”

Sam Switkowski (AF $526k SC $399k FWD) was concussed and has entered protocols. North subbed out Ben McKay (AF $319k SC $306k DEF) with a medial knee worry.

Port Adelaide v Western Bulldogs

Riley Bonner (AF $612k SC $385k D/M) went off with a rolled ankle, which Port coach Ken Hinkley said was “pretty bad” and added that “doubts he’ll play next week”.

The Bulldogs lost Cody Weightman (AF $435k SC $315k FWD) to a broken collarbone, Laitham Vandermeer (AF $441k SC $292k FWD) to a high-grade hamstring and Tim O’Brien (AF $488k SC $368k D/F) to a calf injury. Dogs coach Luke Beveridge said Weightman and Vandermeer were “quite serious”.

Beveridge mentioned Tim English (AF $837k SC $572k R/F) who has missed three games due to a hamstring injury. He said: “Maybe Tim English and Alex Keath might be available.”

On the rested Marcus Bontempelli (AF $806k SC $578k MID), he added: “He think he’ll be OK. He just had a series of things that were hampering him over a period of time. It all came to a head this week. The week off will do him the world of good. We’ll see how we go next week.”
