Sydney v Brisbane Lions

Harry Cunningham (AF $466k SC $313k DEF) was subbed out with an ankle issue, while Joe Daniher (AF $573k SC $400k FWD) went off with a shoulder injury which will be assessed during the week.

Western Bulldogs v Essendon

Nik Cox (AF $433k SC $268k MID) was subbed out with an ankle injury but coach Ben Rutten was hopeful he’d play next round.

The Dogs subbed out Mitch Wallis (AF $372k SC $213k MID) with a sore foot, while Aaron Naughton (AF $564k SC $422k FWD) “should be OK” according to coach Luke Beveridge after soreness.

Robbie McComb (AF $265k SC $102k MID) earned some praise from Beveridge who said: “It was important that some of our lads that haven’t played a lot of footy made an impact. It was good to see Robbie McComb be involved in the game.

“We asked him to play on a wing but he’s an inside mid/small forward. I felt like he did a really really good job with it. Credit to him not playing in his usual position, he was important especially to kick a couple of goals.”

Collingwood v Gold Coast

Debutant Aiden Begg (AF $218k SC $123k RUCK) looks likely to play again next week. Pies coach Craig McRae said: “I think based on today, those two guys (Begg and Darcy Cameron) particularly played their role really well, it’d be hard to change from that.”

Connor Budarick (AF $383k SC $234k DEF) was subbed off for Gold Coast with an ankle issue, which coach Stuart Dew said would be assessed.

Carlton v North Melbourne

Carlton coach Michael Voss offered an update on George Hewett (AF $758k SC $536k D/M) who missed the game with a corked calf. Voss said: “He should be fine. We tried to get him going yesterday and give him every chance.”

Zac Williams (AF $697k SC $494k DEF) was a late withdrawal. Voss explained: “Zac was a bit tight through his calf from training on Thursday. we assessed that this morning and it wasn’t sound enough to warrant the risk.”

Liam Stocker (AF $449k SC $317k DEF) was subbed out with a shoulder issue which was “not too bad” but needed to be assessed, while Voss had praise for debutant Jack Carroll (AF $234k SC $123k MID).

On Carroll, Voss said: “I’m really pleased he got a go. He had a really strong pre-season, could’ve figured in Round 1 but lost a bit of continuity in the early part of year. The last couple of weeks he’s got himself going. He’s got some natural instincts in the midfield role.”

Stocker was also handed a one-game ban for engaging in rough conduct, along with Lewis Young for forceful front-on contact. North’s Nick Larkey also was slapped with a one-game suspension for engaging in rough conduct too.

Debutant Miller Bergman (AF $200k SC $117k D/M) was subbed out with a shoulder injury. North coach David Noble said: “It looks like it’s a dislocation, hopefully not a bad one. Popped back, I think, pretty well.”

St Kilda v Port Adelaide

St Kilda didn’t use their sub. Saints coach Brett Ratten said Jack Steele (AF $943k SC $658k MID) “was enormous”. Ratten explicitly said Rowan Marshall (AF $684k SC $472k RUCK) will return next week after a corked thigh.

Mitch Georgiades (AF $503k SC $329k FWD) was subbed out after his “calf tightened up” according to Port coach Ken Hinkley, who was hopeful he’d be OK for next week.

Melbourne v Hawthorn

Joel Smith (AF $299k SC $233k DEF) was subbed out with an ankle injury and stand-in Demons coach Adem Yze said: “He has obviously rolled his ankle, so there will be scans and things like that. Hopefully the scans aren’t too bad and he doesn’t miss too much footy. We’ll wait for the scans, hopefully it isn’t too long out of the game.”

Hawthorn subbed out Connor Nash (AF $432k SC $313k M/F) with a hamstring injury although Hawks coach Sam Mitchell wasn’t sure on the severity as he had no medical report after the game.

Adelaide v GWS Giants

Brodie Smith (AF $626k SC $440k DEF) has entered concussion protocols after a heavy landing from a mark, while Ned McHenry (AF $378k SC $265k FWD) was subbed out after appearing dazed but coach Matthew Nicks said it was a cut to the head, he hadn’t entered protocols and would be assessed, with a hope to being available next round.

GWS didn’t use their sub.

Geelong v Fremantle

Cats coach Chris Scott was hopeful Patrick Dangerfield (AF $686k SC $483k MID) would return next week after missing two games. Scott said: “That’s our plan (to bring him back in Round 8). He just hasn’t been able to train for almost a month.”

Max Holmes (AF $434k SC $300k M/F) was subbed out early with an ankle issue. Scott said: “Not really sure (about the severity). It was clear he couldn’t go on. With our younger players we have a low threshold for trying to push through those issues. What that means for next week, we’re not exactly sure.” Scott had no insight on an ankle issue for Rhys Stanley (AF $623k S $453k RUCK) who hobbled off late.

Fremantle coach Justin Longmuir offered an update on Sean Darcy (AF $669k SC $568k RUCK) and Matt Taberner (AF $529k SC $354k FWD) who missed the game with concussion and hamstring issues.

Longmuir said: “We’ll have to see how he goes next week, but we’re pretty confident Sean will come back, Tabs might be another week.”

West Coast v Richmond

West Coast debutant Greg Clark (AF $250k SC $117k MID) earned praise from coach Adam Simpson who said: “Clark looked like he’s not out of his depth with his first game.”

Willie Rioli (AF $418k SC $271k F/M) was subbed off at half-time, with Simpson hoping it’s only a hamstring cork. Similarly, Tom Barrass (AF $467k SC $441k DEF) was a late withdrawal with the same concern.

Richmond subbed out Dion Prestia (AF $723k SC $477k MID), with coach Damien Hardwick saying: “Prestia has some Achilles and soleus tightness as well. (The severity is) Hard to tell.”

Hardwick praised Jayden Short (AF $879k SC $532k DEF) for his midfield switch, when he said: “It’s something we’ll continue to explore. He looked real good in there, comfortable. He has been a fantastic contributor down back but if we can find a midfielder, that’s a big bonus.”

Hardwick also offered an update on Dustin Martin (AF $676k SC $503k M/F). He said: “He trained well today, he had a good session, got through that well. We have to get some more skill sessions into him. We have to do due diligence to make sure he is ready to go when he’s needed.”
