Role plays a big part in determining a player’s AFL Fantasy and SuperCoach scoring potential. In this weekly subscriber-only column, we reflect on the past round’s CBAs, kick-ins and TOG% for an insight.
Often these stats will glean insights into role changes, explain scoring spikes or drop-offs or beneficiaries from injuries or absences. It all points to our subscriber-only game-by-game CBAs and kick-ins stats sections too.
Essendon v Collingwood
CBAs: Zach Merrett returned from injury with 24 of 31 CBAs, impacting Andrew McGrath, while Jye Caldwell maintained his rough average of 10 per game.
Pat Lipinski had eight CBAs after missing out entirely in Round 5. Nick Daicos had seven CBAs.
Kick-ins: The Pies shared their kick-ins around with Scott Pendlebury (2/2) and Nick Daicos (1/1) among the 10 taken by five players.
TOG%: Pies rookie Reef McInnes only had 62% TOG. Jye Caldwell (71%) and Ben Hobbs (72%) were also low for the Dons. SSP signing Nic Martin (91%) was Essendon’s highest among their midfield rotations.
Hawthorn v Sydney
CBAs: Tom Mitchell (109/105) attended only 15 of 28 CBAs once again, while Josh Ward (56/46) dropped from 21 CBAs in Round 5 to nine in Round 6. Luke Parker (93/100) was at 21 of 28 CBAs for Sydney, while Isaac Heeney only had two CBAs.
Kick-ins: James Sicily (3/3) had to split kick-in duties with Blake Hardwick (4/2) and Will Day (4/4). Jake Lloyd (6/6) took the majority of Sydney’s kick-ins.
TOG%: Connor MacDonald was down at 69%. Callum Mills (162/214) posted a massive score with only 74% TOG.

Richmond v Melbourne
CBAs: Jayden Short got his first CBA of the season but there was no noticeable beneficiary from Thomson Dow‘s (6) substitution. With only 21 CBAs in the game, Luke Jackson (44/68) only attended six, with Max Gawn taking 15.
Kick-ins: Jayden Short (8/7, 127/111) and Nick Vlastuin (6/5, 131/155) benefitted from Melbourne kicking 22 behinds.
TOG%: Christian Petracca was at 88% despite his score of 76/87.
Gold Coast v Brisbane Lions
CBAs: David Swallow‘s (26) tagging role on Lachie Neale meant a rise in CBAs for him. Matt Rowell (29, 79/103) still attended plenty.
Jarrod Berry (71/84) didn’t attend any CBAs for Brisbane, with Cam Rayner (13) getting more along with Hugh McCluggage (95/113) who has had 52 over the past two games.
Kick-ins: Daniel Rich (8/8) continues to lead these for Brisbane but Dayne Zorko (2/2) is getting a few.
TOG%: Keidean Coleman had 69% TOG on his return from injury. Berry had 75% despite his lack of CBAs.

North Melbourne v Geelong
CBAs: Jy Simpkin (89/83) remarkably attended 29 of 30 CBAs for the game. Jason Horne-Francis (67/65) dipped from 26 last week to 14. Tristan Xerri (61/68) had 60% of the CBAs shared with Todd Goldstein.
Patrick Dangerfield‘s absence was made up by Mitch Duncan (83/86) getting 15 CBAs, having only had six in his previous four games. Max Holmes (57/62) also got put in the middle with 14 CBAs.
Kick-ins: With Aaron Hall out, Aidan Corr (7/7) had the bulk for North along with Lachie Young (6/5). For Geelong, Tom Stewart (3/2) and Zach Tuohy (4/2) shared duties.
TOG%: North debutant Paul Curtis (57/58) played 67%, while Jason Horne-Francis was at 72%. Cats debutant Ollie Dempsey (48/65) played 73%.
Fremantle v Carlton
CBAs: The Dockers numbers were standard, while Patrick Cripps‘ (22) return for Carlton was offset by Matthew Kennedy‘s absence due to soreness.
Kick-ins: Luke Ryan (7/5) continued to dominate Freo’s kick-ins, while Zac Williams (4/3) had Carlton’s joint most.
TOG%: Patrick Cripps (123/139) played 82% on his return from injury, so there were no ill effects. Freo rookie Nathan O’Driscoll (56/42) was among the lowest at 70%, while Will Brodie (74%) and Andrew Brayshaw (72%) were also low.

Port Adelaide v West Coast
CBAs: Ollie Wines‘ (19) return impacted Port’s CBA set-up, with Zak Butters (34/58) dropping back to eight CBAs, having had 17 in Round 5. Connor Rozee (119/153) had a season-high 19 CBAs.
Debutant Luke Strnadica (10) shared the ruck with Bailey Williams (16) for the Eagles.
Kick-ins: Dan Houston (3/3) got involved having only previously had one kick-in all season. Alex Witherden (7/7) got some big numbers aided by leading the kick-ins from Shannon Hurn (2/2).
TOG%: Zak Butters (67%) had low TOG after being unwell during the week. Ollie Wines returned from his heart condition with 74% TOG.
Western Bulldogs v Adelaide
CBAs: Stef Martin came in and absorbed Tim English‘s CBAs as expected. Bailey Smith‘s (92/80) CBAs dropped from 22 in Round 5 to 11 in Round 6, although there was 36 CBAs in Round 5 compared to 21 on the weekend. That didn’t impact Josh Dunkley (139/142) whose CBAs went from 20 to 10 as well.
Kick-ins: Bailey Dale (8/8) and Caleb Daniel (5/5) dominated the Dogs kick-ins, while Jordan Dawson (3/3) had the most for Adelaide.
TOG%: Bailey Smith (92/80) had 92% again, while Matt Crouch (83/91) was down at 74%.

GWS Giants v St Kilda
CBAs: Stephen Coniglio only had one CBA (meaning he’s only had 12 CBAs across the past four games), while Braydon Preuss (13) and Matthew Flynn (9) split up the 22 CBAs relatively evenly. Preuss still scored 105/117.
Kick-ins: Lachie Whitfield (94/65) didn’t take any kick-ins for the first time this season. Isaac Cumming took 12 of GWS’ 16 kick-ins, while Lachie Ash chipped in with three for the first time this year.
For the third straight game, Jack Sinclair (84/112) didn’t attend any CBAs, but he did take six kick-ins, playing on three times. Sinclair has taken over kick-in duty from Brad Hill, since his move forward.
TOG%: Rowan Marshall battled injury throughout the game, limiting him to 61% TOG, yet still scored reasonably at 88/92.
