R3 Injury Recap: Hayes job security update, Preuss praise, Skinner injured, Darcy & Serong updates
Stay up to date throughout the round with our rolling injury report from the coaches post-game. With the nine-game round extending from Thursday night through until Sunday night, these snippets of info will be key.
West Coast v Fremantle
West Coast lost Jamaine Jones (AF $453k SC $299k FWD) to a tight hamstring, while Fremantle subbed out Darcy Tucker (AF $532k SC $326k DEF) after a scary incident where he was stretchered, but it was a concussion and stand-in coach Jaymie Graham said he was in good health.
Graham also offered an update on Sean Darcy (AF $750k SC $642k RUC) and Caleb Serong (AF $659k SC $451k MID) who missed with ankle and knee injuries.
Graham said: “I think Darcy was pretty close to getting up this week. We’ll know more about that and with Caleb (Serong) it is a matter of getting him on the track and seeing how he goes. He didn’t do a lot this week. I haven’t got an answer for next week, but I know Darcy will be close.”
Tim Kelly (AF $699k SC $464k MID) missed the game with a hamstring injury. Eagles coach Adam Simpson said: ” He’s probably a week or two away. It might have been a tiny niggle on game day last week that he thought was cramp, and because we didn’t train all week, we opened up on Thursday a little bit, and that’s when he noticed it was a little bit tight. He’ll be unavailable next week, definitely.”
Elliot Yeo (AF $696k SC $470k MID) is getting closer to a return from a calf injury too. Simpson: said “He’ll be a couple of weeks. I don’t think he’ll be available this week. I’d say two weeks away, hopefully.”
St Kilda v Richmond
Jack Higgins (AF $577k SC $385k FWD) was subbed out by St Kilda with concussion, while Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera (AF $299k SC $162k D/M) rolled his ankle but played on with coach Brett Ratten not too worried about it. He also mentioned Jack Billings (AF $699k SC $451k MID) had a “setback” in his hamstring recovery and will be another 2-3 weeks.
Ratten also discussed Jack Hayes’ (AF $367k SC $187k F/R) role alongside two other talls Paddy Ryder and Rowan Marshall. He said: “Hayesy didn’t do a lot of ruck work this week. We’ll have a look at that & work out which way we go. It’s great we’ve exposed the taller men to play together.”
Jack Grimes (AF $443k SC $389k DEF) injured his hamstring and Tigers coach Damien Hardwick said he will “miss some time”. Hardwick said Jack Riewoldt (AF $518k SC $380k FWD) was close with a finger injury, meaning he’s likely for Round 4.
Carlton v Hawthorn
Jack Scrimshaw (AF $617k SC $425k DEF) was subbed off with a shoulder issue, while Carlton subbed out Marc Pittonet (AF $548k SC $447k RUC) with a back injury which will need to be assessed.
Adam Saad (AF $627k SC $449k DEF) was ruled out on Saturday due to H&S protocols.
Brisbane Lions v North Melbourne
Dayne Zorko (AF $849k SC $595k MID) was iced up late with Brisbane well ahead, while Ben McKay (AF $312k SC $305k DEF) had a corkie and was subbed off in the fourth quarter.
Collingwood v Geelong
Nick Daicos (AF $390k SC $193k MID) played off half-back and had only four CBAs. Collingwood coach Craig McRae said: “We’re conscious of Nick’s workload. Futuristically, he’ll probably play more mid-forward. We’re trying to look after him and play a bit half-back as well.”
Esava Ratugolea (AF $364k SC $303k R/F) injured his ankle and was subbed out for Geelong.
GWS Giants v Gold Coast
Braydon Preuss (AF $367k SC $204k RUC) came in and made a big impact. GWS coach Leon Cameron said: “It was good to see Preussy’s first game. I thought he gave us some really good confidence around stoppage… I felt Braydon really led the charge. Hopefully our connection gets better and better.”
Touk Miller (AF $1.02m SC $677k MID) was tagged by Lachie Ash, with his output way below his norm. Gold Coast coach Stuart Dew said: “It was a good challenge. Touky will learn from that. We trust he’ll bounce back. I don’t expect it’ll become a pattern of behaviour.”
Adelaide v Port Adelaide
Sam Skinner (AF $197k SC $123k D/F) was subbed off or Port with an ankle injury. Power coach Ken Hinkley said: “I don’t know tonight. We’ll wait and see. We’ll get the results, once we look at them tomorrow they’ll fill me in.”
Lachlan Murphy (AF $407k SC $296k FWD) had a neck injury late but was in “good spirits” post-game.
Melbourne v Essendon
There was some commentary that Christian Petracca (AF $983k SC $606k MID) was carrying a niggle but Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin said: “No issues with ‘Trac’.”
Western Bulldogs v Sydney
Tim English (AF $717k SC $482k F/R) laid a heavy bump on Nick Blakey but was cleared by the AFL’s match review officer. The AFL statement said: “It was determined by the MRO that English’s actions were not unreasonable in the circumstances. No further action was taken.”
Marcus Bontempelli (AF $887k SC $651k MID) picked up a shoulder worry. Dogs coach Luke Beveridge: “The message came through it was one of those stingers. Hopefully that’s all it is but they can hang around for a while… He’ll be OK, I don’t think it’s anything too serious.”
