Stars confirm squad for Thunder game, Heat quartet in the R3 mix, Manenti season over

The Melbourne Stars confirmed their squad for Sunday’s Round 3 opener against the Sydney Thunder, while there was a big selection flag around the Brisbane Heat with four possible ins.

The Melbourne Stars named their 14-man squad to play the Sydney Thunder on Sunday night.

Peter Nevill ($61k WKP/BAT) comes into the squad, with Sam Elliott ($42k BWL) and Tom O’Connell ($62k BWL) dropping out.

The Thunder confirmed a 17-man squad, with Baxter Holt ($62k BAT/WKP) and Chris Tremain ($86k BWL) added from Friday’s loss to the Stars.

Thunder: Billings, Cook, Cutting, Gilkes, Green, Hales, Hearne, Holt, McAndrew, Nair, Ross, Sams, Sandhu, J.Sangha, T.Sangha, Tremain, Whiteman

Stars: Maxwell (c), Qais, Cartwright, Clarke, Couch, C-Nile, Hinchliffe, Larkin, Nevill, Rainbird, Russell, Stoinis, Webster, Zampa

In unfortunate news, Ben Manenti ($82k BWL) has been ruled out for the season with a stress fracture in his neck, which may aid the job security of a player like Hayden Kerr ($83k BAT/BWL).

Manenti posted on Instagram: “Absolutely shattered to have my BBL over just as it has just begun having been ruled out with a stress fracture in my neck.”

The Brisbane Heat play the Melbourne Renegades on the Gold Coast on Monday and they may get four players back after the Australia A-England Lions game which finishes in Brisbane on Sunday.

Mark Steketee ($153k BWL), Mitch Swepson ($170k BWL), Michael Neser ($127k BAT/BWL) and Tom Abell ($125k BAT) are all in contention to play, which would significantly impact the look of their Round 3 line-up and players like James Bazley ($98k BAT/BWL) and Liam Guthrie ($55k BWL).

Heat coach Wade Seccombe said: “We’ll definitely look at how all those gentlemen get through that game and how they pull up. If all that goes well, we’ll definitely look to play those guys. it could be a slightly different looking side if that’s the case.”
