Geelong v Hawthorn
Francis Evans (AF $185k SC $123k FWD) was subbed off with an ankle issue. Geelong coach Chris Scott said: “Evans a high ankle. Syndesmosis. They can drag a little bit, but hard to say.
Shaun Higgins (AF $615k SC $458k MID) also went off injured. Scott said: “My understanding is Higgins is a hamstring. Not exactly sure but clearly not good enough to go back on.”
Scott provided an update on Jeremy Cameron (AF $488k SC $388k FWD) who is recovering from a hamstring injury, saying: “Cameron touch and go as far as I know.”
The Cats coach also spoke about Sam Menegola‘s (AF $760k SC $579k MID) AC joint injury and said: “Menegola will come back, we think.”
Jacob Koschitzke (AF $231k SC $141k DEF) had a quiet day and Hawthorn coach Alastair Clarkson said: “They’re not going to be gifted games of footy. If they play their role, which is their competitive work and patterns they run, then they’ll stay in… That’s the whole side.”
GWS Giants v Melbourne
Stephen Coniglio (AF $725k SC $528k MID) injured his ankle and finished the game early. GWS coach Leon Cameron couldn’t provide a timeframe but said: “He had a couple (of syndesmosis ankle injuries) a few years ago that were quite nasty. This one didn’t look good. We’ll scan and find out in the next 24 hours… I feel for him. He’s had a tough 12 months.”
The Giants also lost Phil Davis (AF $353k SC $290k DEF) and Matt De Boer (AF $436k SC $337k MID) to injuries. Cameron said: “I think Davis has done a calf. Timelines we’re not going to know. De Boer is a hamstring.”
Carlton v Fremantle
Zac Williams (AF $612k SC $458k DEF) went off in the second term but returned. Carlton coach David Teague said: “I think it was his ankle… But he was fine. I’m guessing he’s a bit sore now but he should be no issue next week.”
Teague said Will Setterfield (AF $595k SC $481k MID) was a late out with gastro.
Fremantle had a handful of issues, led by Hayden Young‘s (AF $374k SC $279k DEF) hamstring injury which saw him subbed out. Freo coach Justin Longmuir said: “Hayden did his hammy.”
Luke Ryan (AF $659k SC $576k DEF) also battled some issues and Longmuir clarified: “Luke Ryan looks like he should be fine. He had a bit of calf tightness before the game and got through OK.”
Lachie Schultz (AF $507k SC $298k FWD) was concussed, while Longmuir updated on Nat Fyfe‘s (AF $700k SC $608k MID) potential return next round from concussion.
Longmuir said: “Fyfey will come back if he passes all the protocols. Like we’ve said all week, it’s looking really promising.”
West Coast v Port Adelaide
Luke Shuey (AF $657k SC $508k MID) was the only injury issue from the game, subbed out in the last quarter. Eagles coach Adam Simpson said: “He’s done a minor hamstring again. That was the sour point of the night… It feels like it’ll be a standard 21-dayer.”
Essendon v St Kilda
Essendon coach Ben Rutten said Mason Redman (AF $456k SC $330k DEF) had a “slight hamstring”.
Dyson Heppell (AF $566k SC $319k MID) missed the game and Rutten said: “Heppell trained today and will do a bit more tomorrow. He’s on the mend but it’s too early to say if he’ll play but the signs are looking.”
The Saints lost Jade Gresham (AF $623k SC $438k MID) to injury and was subbed out. St Kilda coach Brett Ratten said: “He’ll be out for nine months. He’s popped his Achilles.”
Zak Jones (AF $684k SC $494k MID) also hurt his ankle. Ratten said: “We’re not completely sure. He’s rolled his ankle. Got it caught. To what level we’re not sure.”
Ratten offered an update on the potential return from injury of Rowan Marshall (AF $738k SC $557k R/F). He said: “Marshall played three and a bit quarters today. It’ll be a good conversation on where he’s at… He might be ready to go but we’ll wait and see.”
Ratten also spoke about Paul Hunter (AF $212k SC $102k RUCK), who was dropped for the game. “He was a little bit banged up, trying to make a dash to play AFL,” he said, “We got him into the program and he made a really good case. He pushed pretty hard for 5-6 weeks.”
Richmond v Sydney
Dion Prestia (AF $656k SC $446k MID) was subbed off. Richmond coach Damien Hardwick said: “Dion did a hamstring relatively early. That’s disappointing. He’ll miss a number of weeks.”
Trent Cotchin (AF $641k SC $443k MID) also finished the game on the bench iced up. Hardwick said: “It was just precautionary. He’s had an injury history. We just iced him up. We’ll assess that during the week, back-to-back six-day breaks, we’ll make a decision.”
Hardwick indicated Bachar Houli (AF $764k SC $465k DEF) will play next round. The Tigers coach said: “He played three quarters (in the VFL) which was always the plan. The way the game is played at the moment it suits Bachar… He’ll certainly put his hand up to play next week.”
Adelaide v Gold Coast Suns
Jarrod Witts (AF $634k SC $501k RUCK) suffered a worrying knee injury and was subbed out, depleting the Suns ruck stocks.
Gold Coast coach Stuart Dew said: “It’s not great. We’re obviously not sure without a scan but we’re expecting a number of weeks… More medial & cartilage.”
Adelaide coach Matthew Nicks said they got through unscathed.
North Melbourne v Western Bulldogs
Jared Polec (AF $653k SC $477k MID) was subbed out with a hamstring injury. North Melbourne coach David Noble said: “I don’t know the severity but it’s the same sort of hammy that he had in pre-season, coming into the AAMI Series.”
Jed Anderson (AF $807k SC $562k MID) also went down with an ankle issue. Noble said: “Jed had an ankle. Tried to re-tape it, we did the hop test and he was no good. We’ve got a nine-day break Jed might be close.”
Noble added Luke McDonald (AF $692k SC $512k DEF) will “be back next week”.
Ryan Gardner (AF $276k SC $232k DEF) was subbed out very early with a shoulder injury. Dogs coach Luke Beveridge said: “Gardy’s shoulder appears as the same injury as Hayden Crozier which is a significant AC joint injury. He’ll need to go into surgery this week.”
Collingwood v Brisbane Lions
Brisbane coach Chris Fagan made it clear Lachie Neale (AF $829k SC $721k MID) is battling an injury. Fagan said: “It was a brave effort by him to play tonight. He could’ve easily sat it out and been in better nick for next week’s game against the Dogs. He hasn’t got a serious injury but he’s just pretty sore.”
Fagan provided an update on Oscar McInerney‘s (AF $534k SC $443k RUCK) ankle issue too. He said: “I’m hopeful. We’ve got nine days now… Fingers crossed for Oscar. He hasn’t been able to walk for three days.”
