GWS confirms Kelly to miss again, Williams shock out, Cripps good to go

Josh Kelly has been ruled out of Thursday’s Adelaide-GWS clash and Zac Williams is among a list of others set to miss too, while Andrew McPherson will return from injury and Carlton have named a debutant.

Ins: A.McPherson, S.Reid, J.Caldwell, Z.Langdon, S.Jacobs, D.Cuningham, M.Owies (debutant), T.De Koning, L.Plowman
Outs: M.Poholke (omitted), Z.Williams (Achilles soreness), B.Daniels (hamstring), H.Perryman (calf), S.Mumford (managed), C.Polson (omitted), P.Dow (omitted), E.Betts (managed), M.Pittonet (managed)

Crows coach Matthew Nicks confirmed Andrew McPherson (AF $360k SC $284k DEF) will play after a hamstring injury. Nicks said: “McPherson will come back in. That’ll be the one change we’re looking at at the moment. He was rock solid before he went out.”

Nicks floated a debut for Josh Worrell (AF $216k SC $117k DEF/FWD) who is a 195cm defender and pick 28 in the 2019 AFL Draft but he’s been named among the emergencies.

The Adelaide coach said: “Josh Worrell trained with the squad today. He also played in that (reserves) game on Friday so there’s a few younger guys who are knocking. He’s performed reasonably well.”

Will Hamill (AF $286k SC $210k DEF) was ruled out after playing in the reserves on Friday but he’ll be up for selection next round.

Josh Kelly (AF $779k SC $587k MID) is the significant out for the Giants given the impact that may have on his GWS midfield teammates as he couldn’t recover in time after a concussion two rounds ago.

GWS coach Leon Cameron said: “Josh Kelly won’t play tomorrow night which is disappointing. He’s been a bit “patchy” and we hope he’s available for Saturday against Melbourne.”

Shane Mumford (AF $444k SC $404k RUCK) will be managed after three straight games, while Zac Williams (AF $587k SC $457k DEF) misses with an Achilles issue.

Cameron said: “It’s unlikely that Brent Daniels, Harry Perryman and Zac Williams will be available for tomorrow night.

“Williams with his Achilles, it hasn’t responded after the two short breaks.”

Carlton have named Patrick Cripps (AF $693k SC $523k MID) despite his ongoing knee and cork isues, while they’ve also picked a debutant Matt Owies (AF $170k SC $123k FWD).

Blues coach David Teague said: “We won’t be wrapping anyone up unless they can’t play. (Cripps) had a corkie last week and he got through it pretty well. He should be better for it this week.”

Owies is a 179cm 23-year-old small forward, who was a Category B rookie and has a basketball background.

Sydney have made no changes, meaning Callum Mills (AF $634k SC $480k DEF) remains out with his calf issue.

Swans coach John Longmire said: “Unfortunately, he is just a little short in his preparation. He is feeling really good but if we tried to get him up for this game, we might have put him in danger not only for this game but for the rest of the season, so we didn’t want to take that risk. Hopefully he will be OK for the next game.”

OTHERS

Essendon confirmed exciting rookie Irving Mosquito (AF $245k SC $199k FWD) will miss 12 months with an ACL injury following scans.

Bombers General Manager of Football Dan Richardson said: “Irving will require surgery and the club will fully support him during what will likely be a traditional 12-month rehabilitation process.”

Brisbane General Manager of Football David Noble confirmed Harris Andrews (AF $394k SC $433k DEF) will miss the remainder of the regular season with his hamstring injury.

On the discussion of Andrews’ replacement, Noble spoke about Jack Payne (AF $179k SC $123k DEF) who played one game a month ago.

Noble said: “Jack Payne has played previously. He sort of replaces Harris in size or do you re-shuffle Darcy with Froggy and someone else? I’d imagine that’s what they’re (Match Committee) talking about.”

Archie Smith (AF $259k SC $185k RUCK) is also close to a return which could impact the make-up of Brisbane’s talls.

Noble said: “Archie is going well. He played his second game back this week… He probably comes back into contention for Wednesday.”

Port accepted Zak Butters’ (AF $525k SC $434k FWD) two-game suspension for engaging in rough conduct.
