R14 Rolling Injury Report: Kelly concussion, Ryan in doubt, Gould update

Stay up to date throughout the round with our rolling injury report from the coaches post-game. With the fixtures coming thick, fast and ad-hoc, more than ever, these snippets of info will be key.

Gold Coast v North Melbourne

No new injury concerns.

Carlton v Collingwood

Patrick Cripps (AF $688k SC $532k MID) was limping at times, favouring a knee, but Carlton coach David Teague wasn’t aware of any issue.

Teague said: “No message came up that it was anything substantial so as long as he pulls up well, he should play.”

Collingwood lost Chris Mayne (AF $487k SC $323k DEF/MID*) after a hefty collision, which left him needing to be stretchered off.

Pies coach Nathan Buckley said: “Mayney is going to hospital. Probably fractured cheekbone, that’s the early diagnosis and he was knocked out.”

Melbourne v St Kilda

Michael Hibberd (AF $495k SC $352k DEF) was the only injury concern. Dees coach Simon Goodwin said: “Hibbo has rolled his ankle. We’ve got a game in five days so we’ll see how it comes up. It’s swollen up pretty quickly. We’re in a position to look after our players during this period.”

Fremantle v GWS Giants

Freo defender Luke Ryan (AF $693k SC $605k DEF) hurt his hip late, which Dockers coach Justin Longmuir said left him in doubt for next round.

“In the marking contest with Hill where he landed heavily, he hurt his hip,” Longmuir said. “It looks like it’s bruised but he was a bit sore & there’s no point leaving him out there if he’s sore. Of course he is (in doubt).”

GWS midfielder Josh Kelly (AF $803k SC $601k MID) was taken off at half-time with concussion, which Giants coach Leon Cameron clarified wasn’t a jaw issue despite some speculation.

“No (it’s not a jaw). It’s concussion. He got hit by Mummy,” Cameron said.

“Knee to the head, everything else structurally was fine, he was just ruled out with concussion which makes it tough for next week on a five-day break.”

There was an incident involving Toby Greene (AF $628k SC $490k FWD) which may receive attention from the Match Review Officer after an elbow on Reece Conca, although Cameron played it down, saying he “brushed” him.

Port Adelaide v Sydney

Brad Ebert (AF $580k SC $408k FWD) copped a heavy hit but returned to play out the game despite his history of concussion.

Port coach Ken Hinkley said: “He’s OK. He got the whack on the cheekbone. The critical point is he was symptom free of concussion. He did his tests and passed, came back on to play his part.”

Sydney coach John Longmire was asked about Will Gould (AF $220k SC $117k DEF) who he said was a chance to play late this season.

Longmire said: “He’s had some areas he’s been working on. He’s a chance the back-end of the year. Coming in at that size, he’s able to work on playing different types. He’s been improving the last few weeks. We don’t think he’s far away.”

Western Bulldogs v Geelong

The Dogs lost both Easton Wood (AF $382k SC $281k DEF) and Laitham Vandermeer (AF $406k SC $252k MID/FWD) to hamstring injuries which will sideline them both.

Bulldogs coach Luke Beveridge said: “Hard to know (how bad they are). They’ll obviously be out for a period of time. I dont think Easton is as bad as Laitham’s. We’ll get some scans & let you know.”

Geelong coach Chris Scott was asked about Joel Selwood (AF $501k SC $375k MID) again. Scott said: “It’s an unknown. Joel is 32 and he’s got a lot of footy left in him if we manage him the right way. The message I’d like to communicate is we’re going to be careful with him.”

Richmond v West Coast

Dylan Grimes (AF $453k SC $369k DEF) injured his hamstring in the first half and missed the rest of the game. Tigers coach Damien Hardwick said: “We think it’s on the minor end of the scale… but we need to make sure he’s right when the whips are cracking.”

Josh Kennedy (AF $496k SC $426k FWD) suffered an early concussion which puts him in doubt for next round. Eagles coach Adam Simpson: “He got a head knock & obviously couldn’t come back on. We’ll have to assess him but we’ll do whatever is right for him.”

Simpson also said Oscar Allen (AF $506k SC $380k FWD), who went out for debutant Bailey Williams (AF $170k SC $123k DEF/RUCK), would be available next round after a hip issue.

Hawthorn v Essendon

Jon Patton (AF $280 SC $254 RUCK/FWD) was forced out of the game early through injury although the diagnosis wasn’t clear after the game, but the Hawks have since confirmed he’d injured his plantaris tendon.

Hawks Football GM Graham Wright said: β€œScans have revealed no damage to his Achilles. This one leaves the window open for Jonny to make a recovery in time for a return to football this season.”

Clarkson said he hoped James Frawley (AF $273k SC $268k DEF) and Jaeger O’Meara (AF $690k SC $450k MID) would be available next round too.

“We’re hoping these guys will be available for Tuesday night but we’ll have to wait and see. They did a bit of training today and obviously Jaeger with that surgery it’s about getting the swelling down. We’ll see if that dissipates over the next few days.”

Essendon coach John Worsfold said Michael Hurley (AF $566k SC $451k DEF) was a late withdrawal due to an ankle injury sustained last week which didn’t come up but he said they expect him to be right for next round.

He also said Dyson Heppell (AF $687k SC $514k MID) is “pushing to be back soon”.
