R8 Team News: Jacobs & Georgiades return, Simpkin & Rozee named

Toby Greene, Sam Jacobs and Mitch Georgiades have all been named in their 22s, while Darcy Cameron is in the mix and Sydney have confirmed a first round draft pick debutant.

KEY INS
Toby Greene, Sam Jacobs, Patrick Naish, James Bell, Matthew Ling, Keegan Brooksby, Mitch Georgiades, Brad Ebert, Bailey Williams (26), Harry Edwards (26), Nic Reid (26), Darcy Cameron (26), Connor Ballenden (26), Keidean Coleman (26), Archie Smith (26)

Toby Greene’s (AF $656k SC $471k FWD) return was expected but Sam Jacobs’ (AF $533k SC $406k RUCK) recall wasn’t. He’s still owned by 9% of AFL Fantasy and 7% of SuperCoach coaches.

Well-owned Port forward Mitch Georgiades (AF $258k SC $130k FWD) gets an opportunity after his impressive Round One debut at the expense of Justin Westhoff who’s been dropped.

Darcy Cameron (AF $225k SC $147k RUCK/FWD) is into Collingwood 26 which is notable as Mason Cox, who was a late withdrawal due to the wet conditions last round, isn’t named.

The forecast for Collingwood’s game against West Coast on Sunday is for overcast conditions with 1-2mm of light rain.

KEY OUTS
Shane Mumford, Aiden Bonar, Chad Warner, Ryley Stoddart, Justin Westhoff, Ryan Byrnes, Travis Varcoe, Stefan Martin

Recent debutants Chad Warner (AF $204k SC $125k MID) and Ryan Byrnes (AF $171k SC $117k MID) haven’t lasted while cheap defender Ryley Stoddart (AF $238k SC $138k DEF) has picked up an inopportune back injury.

NOT PICKED
Tristan Xerri, Tom Rockliff, Kieren Briggs, Sam Draper, Justin McInerney, Tyler Brown

The aforementioned trio are all emergencies, with Kieren Briggs (AF $170k SC $123k DEF/FWD) flagged earlier this week and he may be in contention while Shane Mumford is out.

On Mumford, Giants coach Leon Cameron said: “Mummy’s out injured after hurting his neck and he hasn’t come up. He’s out and Sam Jacobs get his opportunity to stake his claim in the ruck. We look forward to it.”

Justin McInerney (AF $282k SC $232k MID) and Tyler Brown (AF $263k SC $232k MID) aren’t even in Sydney or Collingwood’s extended squads so it may be curtains for both of them.

RETAINED
Jy Simpkin, Kyron Hayden, Connor Rozee

There’s been lots of speculation whirling about Jy Simpkin (AF $671k SC $533k MID/FWD) missing this round’s game after picking up an ankle knock against Richmond last week but he’s been named in the 22.

His Roos teammate Kyron Hayden (AF $256k SC $220k MID) has also been selected after a concussion last round.

Likewise, Connor Rozee (AF $494k SC $334k MID/FWD*) suffered a heel injury last round against Carlton but is included at this stage.

THE DEBUTANT
Sydney have named former number 14 pick from the 2017 AFL Draft, Matthew Ling (AF $170k SC $123k DEF) to make his debut.

He’s had a torrid injury run, but is lightning-quick and has a pinpoint left-foot kick according to the Swans website.

Sydney coach John Longmire said: “We always thought he could play, he just couldn’t get a run of it. It’s terrific reward for him to get his first game. He works really hard at his game and he’s a terrific competitor so it’s good to see him get his opportunity.”

OTHERS
We won’t be seeing Jordan De Goey (AF $575k SC $436k FWD) anytime soon with his finger injury. Pies Football GM Geoff Walsh said: “It’ll be a couple of months before we see Jordie back in action.”

Nat Fyfe (AF $714k SC $639k MID) will come into contention before the bye, with Freo coach Justin Longmuir saying: “It looks like he’ll miss this week. We should get him back for the following week. Everything is going well in his rehab.”

Trent Cotchin (AF $606k SC $469k MID) is set to return in Wednesday’s Round Nine clash with the Bulldogs. Tigers coach Damien Hardwick said: “He’ll play next Wednesday. He’s one guy we did manage a bit, game-wise when he will play. He was very close this week.”

Dayne Zorko (AF $622k SC $487k MID) gave an update on his calf/Achilles problem. He said: “It’s a bit of Achilles tendinitis. It’s coming along really well. I was able to train every day last week and play. I’ve been able to train every day this week anf will play. It’s getting better with time, it’s going to be a management thing.”

Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin offered an insight on plans for Harley Bennell (AF $319k SC $193k MID) during the busy period. Goodwin said: “Our current mindset is to play the best team possible. We know Harley’s history. He’ll be one of those players we need to be mindful of… but that’ll be a week-to-week decision.”

TOMORROW
Chris Scott, David Teague, Ken Hinkley, Nathan Buckley and Rhyce Shaw will all front the media. We’ll get a Simpkin update from the latter and the Dockers and Cats will announce their extended squads for Monday games, with the Sunday 22s to be confirmed too.
