There was no major injury news but there were updates on George Wardlaw, Jordan De Goey, Dante Visentini, Tom Hawkins, Mitch Hinge, Lewis Melican and draft smokie Cam Guthrie.
UPDATES
Collingwood revealed there’s more to the Jordan De Goey knock sustained in Friday’s win over Geelong. Collingwood Head of High Performance Jarrod Wade said: “Jordan De Goey (glute) sustained a deep glute strain during Friday night’s match. De Goey will be assessed prior to the side’s Round 23 clash against Brisbane.”
George Wardlaw’s season is over as confirmed by North Melbourne due to hamstring tightness. North Head of Performance Kevin White said the Roos had decided to shut the rookie down for the year.
White said: “It consolidates a really good year of work for George where he’s gotten 13 games in across the season between AFL and VFL, and (he) took some really big strides given the previous two years’ worth of history. We will take a conservative option now, given the fact that he has pulled up with hamstring tightness from that game back (against Essendon).”
North also stated they expect Jy Simpkin to be available despite a corkie to his bicep on the weekend, while Cam Zurhaar’s season is over due to sydnesmosis.
Young Port Adelaide ruck Dante Visentini is a chance to play this week, listed as a “test” with a quad issue.
Port’s injury report said: “Visentini was a late withdrawal from the extended squad last week citing quad tightness. Imaging showed he has sustained a minor strain, with the 20-year-old set to be tested in the coming days to determine his eligibility for selection.”
Cam Guthrie looms as a finals smokie in Draft with Geelong stating he’s expected to return at some level this weekend after a long-term foot injury.
Geelong General Manager of Football Simon Lloyd said: “(He’ll return to) some type of football – that’s something to be determined over the next couple of days, and Cam Guthrie is available to play (this weekend). He’s super excited, and has been running really well, hitting all his metrics, so can’t wait to see the number 29 running around this weekend.”
Lloyd also said Tom Hawkins was in the mix to return from a hamstring injury. He said: “Tom Hawkins has been running, he’ll full train on Wednesday, and we’ll need to work through his availability for selection later this week.” Gary Rohan has been ruled out with a hamstring strain.
Adelaide cleared Mitch Hinge of any structural damage after a knee injury scare. Adelaide High Performance Manager Darren Burgess said: “Fortunately there was no structural damage to his knee, there is still a bit of swelling there but we anticipate that swelling will go down and he’ll be an assess for this week. It was certainly a positive that he was able to play out the game and played very well, and he pulled up fine.”
Sydney coach John Longmire said Lewis Melican was in the mix to return to the AFL side after playing in the VFL on the weekend following injury. Longmire said: “He got through it well.
“When he initially did (the injury) we were a bit concerned that it might have been the end of the season for him, but he’s been fantastic with his rehab and it’s not as bad as we first thought. He was able to get through the VFL and he pulled up well. He was able to do some training today which is a good sign for us.”
Longmire also noted Joel Amartey’s hamstring issue wasn’t a tear but said he has been managing tendonitis there and they’ll make a decision on his availability later in the week, with Jack Buller a chance to come in.
The Western Bulldogs said Jason Johanissen experienced calf tightness in Round 21 and will be monitored this week, while they also confirmed Tom Liberatore has entered concussion protocols.
Melbourne revealed Bailey Fritsch is potentially a chance to play in Round 24 against Sydney which may impact their forward make-up, while GWS said Finn Callaghan is a test to return in Round 23 after Achilles soreness.
Gold Coast ruled out Nick Holman for the season with an LCL injury, which may open the door for small forward Tom Berry.
