Upgrade season is officially underway, with many premiums ripe for the picking. Who are the experts targeting, and what are their plans moving forward?

It’s upgrade season! Last week I downgraded Mackenzie to Ryan and pocketed some cash to use this week. My trade plans centres around bringing in the big guns. With the news Tom Green ($536.6k MID) will miss this week due to suspension, I’m planning on bringing in Touk Miller ($624.2k MID). His run of matches coming up is juicy, with 3 round averages of 134 vs Kangaroos, 137.33 vs Richmond, and 141.33 vs Melbourne. He then faces a depleted West Coast. At $624k he’s $38k cheaper than his starting price. Hop on now before you may be priced out! To run this upgrade, Matt Roberts ($129.8k M/F) and Matthew Johnson ($139k MID) are on the radar. Having both played as subs in previous games, the pair managed to get a full match in round 5. Expect them to make some cash for us over the next 5 to 6 weeks. Other players I am monitoring and targeting over the coming weeks include Tom Stewart ($601.2k DEF), James Sicily ($555k DEF), Zach Merrett ($578.2k MID), Callum Mills ($573.9k MID) and Stephen Coniglio ($485.6k M/F).

Reuben Ginbey ($296.8k D/M) to Matt Roberts ($129.8k M/F) via Sheezel DPP
If I hadn’t gone early on Jones last week, I’d also be looking at punting him this week from my side. Oskar Baker ($252.1k MID) also is firmly in my sights to be traded but only if I can find a suitable downgrade or upgrade target. As it stands, Ginbey must go as his cash gen has now stalled and Matty Roberts should skyrocket in price with a 93 in his cycle as long as he keeps his spot. As I only have Dawson and Daicos running my backline, getting in Tom Stewart, Jake Lloyd ($533.9k DEF) or Luke Ryan ($566.6k DEF) in the next fortnight is priority 1. I’m also looking at the possibility of dumping one or even both of Andrew Brayshaw ($539.8k MID) and Tom Green to Jack Ziebell ($442.2k D/F) as a way of freeing up cash.

It’s come around quickly and after 5 days away with minimal mobile reception, I feel refreshed after my first decent score for the season. Luke Ryan is someone who wasn’t ever going to be on my sights but he is hard to ignore with a lowest score of 93 and highest of 171 and an average if 120. At the moment I have Reuben Ginbey, Anthony Caminiti ($229.9k FWD) and Cam Mackenzie ($263.3k M/F) out and Luke Ryan, Matt Roberts and either Seamus Mitchell ($123.9k D/F) or Matthew Johnson in. This may change but after just hitting some WiFi, this is where I have currently landed. Two other options I am considering are Liam Baker ($522.5k D/F) and Jake Lloyd who seem to have SC friendly roles.

The names on the chopping block this week are Reuben Ginbey, Cam Mackenzie and Oskar Baker. Ginbey looks tired, Mackenzie’s cash generation has been severely stunted after being the sub last week and Baker seems to have almost maxed out as well. I think Tom Green is a hold given he’ll miss just one week through suspension. I’ll likely downgrade to Dylan Williams ($123.9k FWD) and Matt Roberts this week, build a warchest and then target the likes of Touk Miller, Lachie Neale ($636.5k MID) and Tom Stewart as my first upgrades.

The start of upgrade season is here and the rookies are on the chopping block. If you start sideways trading players now then you’ll end up being behind the pack. I’ll be culling the rookies who are close to their breakevens or suspended for multiple weeks and freeing up some cash for upgrades. Anthony Caminiti and Cam Mackenzie are gone this week for 2 rookies on the bubble, bank the cash. With 7 spots left in my team (4 mids/2 defenders) I’ll be looking at grabbing those premium mids who were overpriced at the start of the year and have now dropped in cash. Touk Miller and Lachie Neale, GET IN MY TEAM!
