In the aftermath of Round 4, Monday’s news brings injury updates out of Tigerland, including surgery for Toby Nankervis, Max Michalanney receives more praise, and Will Day might be in MRO trouble.
Richmond Physical Performance Manager Luke Meehan provided a number of injury updates, including Toby Nankervis (AF $864k SC $563k RUC), who will undergo surgery after suffering a syndesmosis injury against the Western Bulldogs.
On Nankervis, Meehan said: “He was pretty tough to play out the game. Today, the extent of the injury revealed that he requires surgery. We’re hoping it will be more on the medium-term.” Ivan Soldo (foot – plantar fasciitis) is listed as short-medium term, which may present more ruck opportunities for Samson Ryan (AF $244k SC $156k R/F). Richmond may opt for Ben Miller to shoulder the ruck load as well.
Meehan said a hip injury to Robbie Tarrant is seen as indefinite, and the club is hoping to see him back later in the year. This may bode well for the job security of Tylar Young (AF $218k SC $142k DEF).
On Jayden Short (AF $820k SC $543k MID), Meehan said: “He’s going really well… We think that he’ll probably be available next week. He’ll miss this week and we’ll make sure he’s right for the rest of the year.”
On Tom Lynch (AF $565k SC 432k FWD), Meehan said: “Unfortunately, Tom suffered a foot fracture and it required surgery. He had that last night and from all reports, it went really well. We’ll know more when he gets back to the Club, but it’s looking like more long-term than short.”
Adelaide coach Matthew Nicks had positive words about Max Michalanney (AF $384k SC $244k DEF) on AFL 360. He said: “This is a young lad who’s played four games. Even when you watch some of his stuff from behind the ball, it’s amazing where he’s at, at such an early part of his career. The footy he’s playing, contested game, and he’s playing on some really high level opponents as well which makes it even more impressive.”
Hayden Crozier (AF $501k SC $238k DEF) was subbed out against Richmond due to a back injury after a collision. Scans cleared him of serious injury, but he is still in doubt for their clash against Port Adelaide next week.
In Fremantle’s latest injury update, Nat Fyfe (AF $657k SC $313k M/F) is listed as TBA, with the Dockers’ report saying he is continuing to progress in his rehabilitation.
Hawthorn’s Will Day (AF $727k SC $454k DEF) might be in MRO trouble after a dangerous tackle on Geelong’s Brad Close. Based off previous dangerous tackle incidents, Day might see a week or two on the sidelines.
In other MRO news, GWS’ Lachie Ash (AF $617k SC $384k MID) escaped with a fine for rough conduct on Essendon’s Kyle Langford.
