UPDATES

Mason Cox (AF $512k SC $338k FWD) did not train on Wednesday due to illness, which may offer some hope for Darcy Cameron (AF $736k SC $488k F/R) owners on his role.

Pies coach Craig McRae said: “He has a virus – not Covid – he’s fine but under the Covid protocols we are keeping all those who aren’t well out of the building.”

McRae indicated Brodie Grundy (AF $802k SC $544k RUC) will likely return via the VFL although Cox’s status may impact that call. He said: “We’re hoping (for VFL). He’s still got to train Friday and he got through again today. He’s better prepared now to play AFL footy, but whether that’s minutes in the VFL this week, time will tell. We’re pleased that he’s progressing.”

Jordan De Goey (AF $617k SC $416k M/F) looks set to return from a quad injury while Brayden Maynard (AF $622k SC $477k DEF) will face a test on his shoulder. McRae said: “Jordy trained really well, so we’re really comfortable with where Jordy’s at.”

Darcy Parish (AF $824k SC $586k MID) will miss again with a calf injury. Essendon Head of High Performance Sean Murphy: “He ticked off a really good session on the weekend. He’s miss this week but get (another) solid session in this weekend and all things going really well, he’ll be available for the GWS game.”

Mason Redman (AF $771k SC $553k DEF) is 50-50 for this weekend too, after being subbed out with internal bruising. Murphy said: “He was cleared of any serious damage that night and he was pretty sore today and he’ll have to be a test for this weekend. If he gets through main training he should be ok, but at this point of the week, we’ll just have to wait and see.”

Lachie Whitfield (AF $753k SC $462k D/M) and Josh Kelly (AF $822k SC $550k MID) are not certain to return from hip flexor and concussion issues. GWS caretaker coach Mark McVeigh said: “We’ve got main training tomorrow… Obviously Whitfield and Kelly will have to tick off some pretty hard stuff tomorrow to be able to put their hand up.”

Freo coach Justin Longmuir praised in-form defender Hayden Young (AF $743k SC $482k DEF) when he said: “(His kicking) is a real weapon. His aerial presence was real strong. We’ve seen both of elements come to the fore. His strengths are coming out more often… He’s in a good space.”
