Essendon v Gold Coast

Neither side used their sub. Ben Hobbs (AF $499k SC $321k M/F) hurt his shoulder early but played on and Dons coach Ben Rutten said: “He got a pretty heavy knock on his shoulder. I think he got it strapped up and was pretty sore… To cop a solid knock and compose himself, it was a pretty brave effort from him.”

Massimo D’Ambrosio (AF $329k SC $195k DEF) played in the VFL and had a new role which may offer him an avenue back into the AFL side. Rutten said: “He played a bit forward (in the VFL). We love what we’ve seen from him over the last 5 weeks but he’s got a skillset which we think may have value in other positions. We’re finding out.”

Melbourne v Port Adelaide

Neither side used their sub.

Hawthorn v West Coast

Hawthorn didn’t use their sub, while Callum Jamieson (AF $318k SC $221k RUCK) was subbed out late with an adductor issue and will likely need scans. Tim Kelly (AF $724k SC $471k MID) had a corkie.

Jai Culley (AF $190k SC $102k M/F) came in for his debut. Eagles coach Adam Simpson said: “It looks like he’s up for the fight. He had 12 tackles and 5-6 clearances, you’d take that for a first gamer. He’ll remember that forever.”

Fremantle v Sydney

Neither side used their sub.

Carlton v Geelong

Sam Menegola (AF $666k SC $437k MID) was subbed out due to suspected concussion the second quarter. Carlton didn’t use their sub. Carlton’s Mid-Season draftee Will Hayes (AF $280k SC $123k M/F) was offered a two-game ban for the Menegola tackle.

North Melbourne v Richmond

Nick Larkey (AF $375k SC $272k FWD) was subbed out with an Achilles concern. Josh Gibcus (AF $320k SC $253k DEF) was subbed out with a shoulder concern which Tigers coach Damien Hardwick would mean he’s “likely to miss next week”.

GWS Giants v Brisbane Lions

Josh Kelly (AF $861k SC $567k MID) copped a few heavy hits and GWS caretaker coach Mark McVeigh confirmed he had suffered a concussion. He said: “He’s in concussion protocols. I’ll be advised by the medical staff with that. He’s not too bad but obviously we respect the process.”

Keidean Coleman (AF $619k SC $437k D/F) returned impressively after missing last week in health and safety protocols. Brisbane coach Chris Fagan said: “We missed Keidean last week. I thought he was wonderful today. I was a little worried for him given he had had Covid but it didn’t seem to worry him.”

Fagan indicated Dayne Zorko (AF $637k SC $391k D/M) and Daniel Rich (AF $735k SC $538k DEF) will likely be available next week after hamstring issues.

Adelaide v Collingwood

Neither side used their sub but Rory Laird (AF $995k SC $668k MID) earned praise for his dominant display. Crows coach Matthew Nicks said: “We know what Lairdy brings. He’s been consistent with that all year. There hasn’t been games where he’s been off. He’s a competitor.”

Nick Daicos (AF $711k SC $506k D/M) was outstanding and possibly best afield. Pies coach Craig McRae said: “It just seems to be going to another level. He had 40 today and kicked three. He’s a first-year player. Unbelievable. Nick is having an outstanding season and it seems to be getting better every week.”

Western Bulldogs v St Kilda

Marcus Bontempelli (AF $811k SC $597k M/F) was outstanding for the home side. Bulldogs coach Luke Beveridge said: “Tonight his work across all phases was quite brilliant. His desire, will and competitiveness is always there. His work in the phone box was extraordinary. He really set us alight.”

Paddy Ryder (AF $532k SC $376k RUC) was subbed out for St Kilda, with any stint on the sidelines likely to positively impact Rowan Marshall’s (AF $718k SC $477k R/F) role. Saints coach Brett Ratten said: “It’s his Achilles, around that. We’ve got to be wary of a player at 34 with a history of that. Whether he plays next week or not, it’ll be touch and go.”
