Darcy Parish looks set to return after two games out for Essendon but Max Gawn has been ruled out for this weekend but should return for Round 17, while Brodie Grundy isn’t far away either.
Ins: Zorko, Bailey, Bedendo, Hunter
Outs: Robertson, Robinson, T.Berry, Daniel (inj), Richards (inj), McNeil
Key holds: Tunstill, McComb
Possible subs: Darcy, Khamis
Jarryd Lyons (AF $810k SC $484k MID) has been named despite being subbed off with a rib injury. Brisbane coach Chris Fagan said: “He’s fine. It settled down pretty quickly. He’s trained both sessions this week. He did match practice yesterday, got through. He’ll play.”
Caleb Daniel (AF $717k SC $490k DEF) was a surprise out with a knee injury, although the Dogs didn’t provide any information on the severity.
Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin declared Max Gawn (AF $845k SC $608k RUCK) will not play this weekend. Goodwin said: “He’s tracking well. He’s a hard man to keep down. He’s pushing all the time. He’s back training and doing his rehab. He won’t play this week but he’s looking like he will be available the week after.”
Luke Jackson (AF $586k SC $396k F/R) earned more praise for his stand-in role. Goodwin said: “Jacko’s game was great on the weekend. I thought he really stepped up. He’s a different type of ruckman to Max so he gives us a different look around the ball. He’s a disruptor around contest areas.”
Another gun ruck Brodie Grundy (AF $804k SC $544k RUC) isn’t far from returning from a knee issue. Collingwood said in an update: “Has progressed from straight line running to agility/change direction and is ‘ticking a lot of boxes’ in the gym. At this stage he’s still expected to return in Round 18.”
Pies rookie Aiden Begg (AF $269k SC $148k RUC) has “picked up a thumb injury in the VFL match but played out the game. Scans showed a tiny crack in his thumb which will not require surgery and looks like a 2-3 week injury.”
Darcy Parish (AF $869k SC $607k MID) appears set to return following a calf issue. Essendon Head of High Performance Sean Murphy said: “Darc was really close to actually playing in that game (vs West Coast) but he just didn’t quite get there. He’s 100% now & will train fully this week to be available for selection this weekend.”
Mitch Owens (AF $281k SC $139k MID) looks unlikely to play this weekend for the Saints. The club update said: “Mitch Owens continues to progress positively through his concussion protocols, needing to complete a number of further sessions to solidify a comeback.”
Braydon Preuss (AF $657k SC $444k RUCK) is no certainty to return from suspension due to an ankle injury, listed as a “test”. The Giants said in an update: “Preuss is coming off a one-week suspension and an ankle injury sustained in Round 14 against the Bulldogs.”
James Peatling (AF $498k SC $361k DEF) isn’t far away. The Giants said: “Nearing a return after suffering a low-grade hamstring strain. He’s expected to be available for selection next week (Round 17) when the team heads to Adelaide to take on the Power.”
