Youngsters Greg Clark (AF $448k SC $243k MID), Buku Khamis (AF $285k SC $155k DEF) and Marcus Windhager (AF $327k SC $231k M/F) were among those to lose their spots.

Braydon Preuss (AF $683k SC $457k RUCK) was named in the ruck for GWS despite concerns about his recall following comments from caretaker coach Mark McVeigh who said: “He’s definitely a chance. He’s in the mix. People need to understand Braydon was quite ill prior to the bye. It affected him more than some other players.

“It took him 12-13 days to get over that, he wasn’t able to train or play. Slowly we got him into training and he played his first VFL game over the weekend. We’ve been really happy with Flynny. Another really good debate at match committee today but he’s certainly in the mix.”

Port coach Ken Hinkley confirmed their changes in the morning with Travis Boak (AF $729k SC $496k MID) out due to health and safety protocols. Hinkley said he’d likely only miss one game. Jackson Mead (AF $306k SC $203k MID) is among those who will come in.

Essendon coach Ben Rutten revealed early on Thursday Darcy Parish (AF $869k SC $607k MID) will miss Friday’s game against St Kilda due to a corked calf. Rutten said: “He’s struggled this week to get up so he won’t play for us. We’re just hopeful it’s just this week. Corkies tend to pick up pretty quick once the bleeding stops but didn’t quite get there this week.”

DEBUTANT ALERT

Port Adelaide’s Mid-Season Draft pick eight Brynn Teakle (AF $190k SC $102k R/F) will make his debut this round. He is a 22-year-old 203cm forward/ruck who joined from WAFL club East Fremantle and kicked three goals in his SANFL debut last weekend.

Hinkley said: “He’s been at our club 14 days and he’s now going to play his first AFL game. He’s got great energy. He played with great energy at SANFL level. We played with Jeremy (Finlayson) and Charlie (Dixon) last week (in the ruck) and we’ve got Marshall, so we’ve got great options. We’ll have some great flexibility. He’s a threat as a forward.”

Mid-season draftee Massimo D’Ambrosio (AF $190k SC $102k DEF) gets his debut after 33 disposals in the VFL. Rutten said: “Both of them (Jye Menzie and D’Ambrosio) have brought some energy. Massimo coming in and playing in the VFL last week, I thought he did a really good job. We’re looking at them as long-term players for us.”

GWS confirmed a debut for Ryan Angwin (AF $190k SC $123k D/M) who went pick 18 in the 2020 AFL Draft. He’s a 185cm left-footed medium forward/defender, who had 21 disposals and 4 tackles last weekend in the VFL.

West Coast have named Rhett Bazzo (AF $218k SC $117k D/F) for his debut. He went pick 37 in the 2021 AFL Draft. He’s a 194cm 18-year-old key position player who had 21 disposals and six 6 marks last weekend in the WAFL.

UPDATES

Harry Himmelberg (AF $600k SC $435k FWD) may not be locked into his backline role with Nick Haynes available again (Phil Davis will return from injury via the VFL this weekend), which could impact his scoring output. McVeigh said: “There will be a robust match committee today. Do we reset Harry Himmelberg forward, do we play him somewhere else? What does it look like? Certainly we’ve got some things to discuss.”

Tim Taranto (AF $784k SC $465k M/F) seems set to miss out as he bids to return from a back issue. McVeigh said: “Taranto is currently completing a session. If he gets through that or looks pretty good, we’ll weigh up where he sits. He’s more likely to play VFL than AFL at this stage.”

James Peatling (AF $503k SC $371k DEF) has been a revelation in recent weeks. McVeigh said: “He’s been terrific. As a coaching group we identified we needed speed in our forward half with Hill and Daniels not available. He can pressure up, he’s got high speed and goal sense.”

Tom Stewart (AF $870k SC $605k DEF) is all clear to return for Geelong against West Coast. Cats coach Chris Scott said: “Fine, no problems. There’s never a good time to get concussion but that was it, leading into a bye.””

Patrick Dangerfield (AF $619k SC $435k MID), however, will miss again. Scott said: “He’s been training really well but we just don’t feel going to Perth this week justifies the interruption to his training for his preparation for the last 9 games of the season for him.”

Mitch Owens (AF $281k SC $139k MID) may struggle to get back into the St Kilda side after concussion protocols this week with several key players coming in along with Jack Steele who is close. Saints coach Brett Ratten said: “Zak Jones has come up. The MRI was all clear… (Jack) Billings, (Hunter) Clark will come in. Nasiah (Wanganeen-Milera) will come in as well.”

The AFL have confirmed that Western Bulldogs star Bailey Smith (AF $872k SC $553k M/F) has been banned for a further two weeks on top of his current suspension. The AFL statement said: “Has been found guilty of conduct unbecoming and has been suspended for two matches. Content recently emerged on social media platforms, showing Smith using an illicit substance.”
