George Hewett (AF $758k SC $536k D/M) has been named, but only as part of Carlton’s 26 at this stage as he attempts to return from a calf injury.

The Blues update said: “Could return, having been named on the eight-person interchange which will be reduced at 5pm tomorrow. It was announced on Wednesday that Hewett had trained fully earlier that day, with another session to come on Friday.”

Tom Mitchell (AF $803k SC $526k MID) has been managed by Hawthorn. Hawks Head of Football Rob McCartney said: “Tom has been unwell for the past week and as a result was unable to train for parts of this week.”

Nathan O’Driscoll (AF $464k SC $296k D/M) is out for Fremantle, with the club confirming he has sustained a foot injury although they didn’t put a timeframe on it, which was reported as six weeks by 7NewsPerth’s Ryan Daniels.

Jason Horne-Francis (AF $509k SC $314k MID) will miss North’s game, with the club confirming he has “experienced hamstring tightness during the week”.

Richmond confirmed that young defender Josh Gibcus (AF $401k SC $327k DEF) will miss this round’s game due to entering the AFL’s health and safety protocols.

DEBUTANT ALERTS

Bigoa Nyuon (AF $190k SC $123k DEF) will come into the Richmond side to replace Gibcus. Nyoun was pick 54 in the 2019 AFL Draft and is an athletic key position player, likely to play in defence. He had 18 disposals, 7 marks and 6 spoils in VFL last weekend. Tigers coach Damien Hardwick said: “We’re also reasonably pleased with how Biggy Nyuon is going,”

Sam Butler (AF $246k SC $117k M/F) will debut for Hawthorn. He was pick 23 in the 2021 AFL Draft. The half-forward has averaged 11.6 disposals and kicked five goals across five VFL matches this year.

UPDATES

Nat Fyfe (AF $709k SC $546k MID) was back at training for Fremantle today, raising questions about the impact of his looming return on Will Brodie (AF $677k SC $466k M/F).

Fremantle coach Justin Longmuir said: “I see Brodie and Fyfe playing in the same team. There is an opportunity for both of them to rotate forward and bring their aerial presence down there.”

Luke Ryan (AF $646k SC $467k DEF) is no certainty to play this weekend due to an ankle injury but has been named. Longmuir said: “It hasn’t improved as quickly as we’d like. We’ll give him every opportunity.”

Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin confirmed Max Gawn (AF $944k SC $669k RUCK) will play despite a knee worry earlier this week. Despite being cleared of any structural damage, there was some fear the Demons may rest Gawn for the long trip to face West Coast.

Goodwin said: “He’s definitely going to be playing. He’s fully fit – he’s training today, he’s out there doing some centre bounce work. He’s firing on all cylinders and wants to go out and perform well for the club.”

Jordan Ridley (AF $623k SC $480k DEF) has been named to return from illness. Bombers Head of High Performance Sean Murphy said: “Those five lads are all improving which is great.

“They were in on Tuesday, trained with the boys and they’re building across the program for the week. Hopefully we’ll see them this weekend.”

Peter Ladhams (AF $690k SC $513k F/R) has a minor ankle issue. Sydney Head of Physiotherapy and Medical Services Damian Raper said: “Peter Ladhams sustained a low-grade ankle sprain but recovered well and we expect him to be available this weekend.”
