Key inclusions: Maginness, Xerri, Milera, Soligo, Naish, Dixon, Davies

Key exclusions/possible subs: Erasmus, J.Williams, Jamieson, Moyle

Marcus Bontempelli (AF $905k SC $651k MID) may miss Round 2 for the Western Bulldogs due to an ankle injury sustained on Wednesday. The Dogs play Carlton on Thursday.

Western Bulldogs Head of Sports Medicine Chris Bell said: “Like any ankle sprain, he has some pain and swelling that we are managing in the early part of this week. We will work through a process with Marcus into next week to determine his availability to play against the Blues on Thursday night.”

Brisbane Lions coach Chris Fagan said he was expecting a far improved version of Jarrod Berry (AF $725k SC $268k MID) having shaken off injury worries that tormented his 2021. Fagan said: “He feels good about his body (this year), he’s confident. His practice-match form is really good. We look forward to getting more from him than we did last year which was mostly because he was injured.”

Fagan also downplayed expectations on Cam Rayner (AF $396k SC $278k FWD) who he said was “jumping out of his skin” to play after missing 2021 with an ACL. Fagan said: “All he’s got to do tomorrow night is play his role, he doesn’t have to play the house down, he’s just got to play his role.”

Jarrod Witts (AF $572k SC $380k RUCK) has only just returned from a long-term ACL injury but he’s confident in his body. Witts said: “I’m pretty confident I can still play my role for the team. I wouldn’t be putting my hand up if I wasn’t confident in performing. I’m ready to go.”

Port Adelaide coach Ken Hinkley spoke about the surprise debut of Jackson Mead (AF $190k SC $123k MID). Hinkley said: “Jackson Mead plays footy in the right way, he’s a tough inside player who is great on both sides of his body. He competes and he competes hard. He’ll play a bit of midfield time.”

Hinkley was also asked about the non-selection of 2021 Draft pick 12 Josh Sinn (AF $268k SC $157k D/M). He said: “Josh Sinn was really close. We did consider playing him. He played in the last trial game which shows how close he was to a debut. You will see him sooner than later playing AFL football.”

Fremantle coach Justin Longmuir revealed the likely role for Will Brodie (AF $387k SC $224k F/M) with Nat Fyfe out. He said: “This week we expect him to play as an inside mid. He’s very good at the contest and very good with his pressure. I’m excited to see what he can do because he’s had a very strong pre-season.”
