UPDATES

Tom Mitchell (AF $969k SC $638k MID) “should be available for selection” in Round 1 after some groin soreness in pre-season.

Hawthorn club doctor Liam West said: “He pulled up slightly sore after the game against Collingwood therefore we made the decision that it’d be best if he was rested against Richmond. He’s doing really well. He’s back on track. He’s going to do game play later in the week and he should be available for selection against north Melbourne in Round 1.”

Will Day (AF $531k SC $345k DEF) won’t play in Round 1 but isn’t far off a return, having had an ankle injury.

West said: “Will Day is continuing through his rehab plan from his ankle injury. We’re starting to get towards game loads. At the moment we’re looking at a return to AFL football and selection around Rounds 2-3, certainly early in season.”

Carlton moved to shut down talk of an early return for Sam Walsh (AF $914k SC $637k MID) following syndesmosis surgery.

Carlton head of footy Brad Lloyd told SEN: “Sam Walsh won’t play Round 1. Our timeline hasn’t changed with him in regards to missing the first month of the season but in saying that, he’s rehabbing really well, we’re not going to push him.”

Blues coach Michael Voss went on SEN and spoke about captain Patrick Cripps (AF $686k SC $454k MID). He said: “I couldn’t be more pleased with his preseason. The way he has applied himself and, as everyone has seen over the past couple of weeks, the way he is moving.”

Voss was also asked about the impact of new recruit George Hewett (AF $537k SC $399k D/M). Voss said: “Brings a real contested nature to the game. Pays particular attention to the defensive side of the game, in particular the transition side which helps across the midfield. It builds out your midfield profile so it runs deeper.”

The move of Mitch McGovern (AF $463k SC $256k FWD) back was also discussed, and Voss said: “We strongly felt we needed that intercept type down back. Mitch not only brings that but he’s a beautiful user of the game. Importantly his body is giving him the chance to get out there every training session and work on his craft.  The early signs are really promising.”
